High Point's wrestling team heard all of the doubters coming into the season.
After losing a wealth of talent from last year's Group 3 championship team, many felt this was the year for the Wildcats' stranglehold on Sussex County and rival Kittatinny to end.
Not so fast.
Buoyed by a pair of huge wins at 132 and 138 pounds, High Point seized the momentum early and never relinquished its grip in an impressive 32-12 win over archrival Kittatinny on Thursday in a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference clash before a packed house in Wantage.
High Point (13-3) extended its winning streak in the series to seven -- its longest in the 37-match rivalry dating to 1976. The 'Cats, who lead the series, 25-11-1, overall, also have won 61 straight conference matches and 51 in a row against Sussex County opponents dating to their last loss -- 39-18 to Kittatinny on Jan. 22, 2005.
"Our kids did a great job tonight, coming out and performing the way they did against Kittatinny," said High Point coach John Gardner, now 7-7 against the Cougars in his 14 seasons on the bench.
Senior Jason Snider returned to the mat for the first time this season and delivered a huge 5-1 victory over Kittatinny sophomore Nick Romyns at 138. Snider, third in District 3 last season, has missed time with some personal issues but sure didn't show any signs of rust. He earned a takedown in the second period and another in the third as he dominated most of the action against Romyns (18-4), a district runner-up. Snider pinned Romyns in High Point's 52-16 win last year.
That win came on the heels of Jason Gaccione's clutch 2-1 win in triple overtime against fellow freshman Tom Murphy at 132. Gaccione (17-4) gave up an escape with 14 seconds left in regulation to force OT, but was able to ride out Murphy (14-9) in the first 30-second rideout period. Murphy cut Gaccione immediately in the second rideout, a questionable decision, and that proved to be the difference.
The two Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex runners-up also had a number of great scrambles during the bout, as both nearly came up with takedowns.
"Jason [Gardner's nephew] is a quality kid and he's adding a lot to our [practice] room the way he works," Gardner said.
But the turning point of the match came early when sophomore Chris Auer overcame an early 4-2 deficit to record a 15-4 major decision over Kittatinny's Kevin Jelinek in the evening's third bout at 126.
Jelinek raced out to an early lead on the strength of two takedowns and nearly had Auer decked with a cradle as they went out-of-bounds near the end of the first period. But Auer (12-7) turned it on in the second period with a takedown and two sets of back points for another five and a 10-4 lead heading into the final period.
Freshman Mike Derin's 11-4 win at 120 started High Point on a run of four straight wins, capped by Snider's victory at 138 that gave the hosts a 13-4 lead. The 'Cats also won the flip and were able to control key matchups at 145 and 182.
At 145, Kittatinny ace Clarke Moynihan drew the Cougars closer with a pin of Moses Yasin, but High Point was able to bump Alec Alvino away to match up with freshman Brandon Olsen. Alvino hit a five-point move in the first en route to a 10-2 major decision.
High Point also got some clutch performances in losses, as sophomore Antonio Porraspita did an admirable job as a heavy underdog against Kittatinny sophomore Kieran Gerrity. Porraspita was down 8-0 in the third period, but managed a takedown with a minute remaining to avoid the major. Gerrity decked Porraspita in last year's dual meet.
Senior Kevin Pettinger followed with a big 4-3 win over Kittatinny junior Jake Brook at 170 in what was one of the key tossups of the night. Kyle Stoll's 5-1 win over Garrett Armstrong all but sealed the deal for High Point, which led 23-13 with four bouts to go.
"I just went out and did what had to be done," said Stoll, whose father, Joe, was a region champion at heavyweight for Vernon in 1984. "There was a little more pressure, but you just have to take the same approach and wrestle how you know how to do."
Heavyweight Chris Epperly officially clinched the match in the next-to-last bout, decking Kittatinny's Tom Smith in 40 seconds to make it an eight-point lead.
"You can't be successful unless all 14 kids give a quality effort," Gardner said. "Tonight they did."

Breakdown: High Point, which clinched its third straight American Division title on Monday and its seventh straight conference title, is putting its nearly seven-year county and conference unbeaten streak on the line against its arch-nemesis. Kittatinny entered the year as the favorite, but this one should be very close. In my opinion, this one will be decided from 170 through 285. All of those bouts are tough to call. Lots of lineup questions for both also make it a tough read. Will Snider make his season debut and where will Gaccione go for the 'Cats? Will Moynihan possibly drop to 145 since the weight to make is 149? I have no reason to think Snider will wrestle, but you can't rule it out. His presence would certainly be huge for a potential High Point upset. Gaccione defeated Romyns, 3-2, at Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex. Without Snider, I think Gaccione goes 132 to try and take out Murphy, rather than run the risk of losing both 132 and 138. Same thing with Torppey at 106. Gallo beat Silva, 4-2, at HWS, but Elphick is very tough at 113 and I feel would be favored over Torppey. Dropping Moynihan to 145 would give the Cougars a chance to sweep 145 and 152, otherwise Alvino is favored over Olsen at 145. Kittatinny will be favored at 113, 132, 138, 145 or 152 (with Moynihan), 160, 182 (with Wunder) and 195 (Wunder beat Bye, 7-0, at HWS). High Point gets the nod at 106, 120, 126, 145 (Alvino-Olsen) and 285. I have 170 and 220 as tossups but leaning toward High Point in both. I have it a 7-7 split, but the Cougars have the potential for four bonus-point wins, and I think that will be the difference. I will say this is probably the toughest match to predict all season, and it would not shock me if High Point wins. 'Cats will need either 132 or 138 and both tossups to do it.

Newton set to compete in Jack Welch Duals
Pairings and seeds were announced on Wednesday for the sixth annual Jack Welch Duals to be held this Friday and Saturday at Moorestown High School.
Newton (4-8) is the lone Open Mike area team competing in the 16-team field. The Braves are the No. 13 seed and will face No. 4 Collingswood (16-6) in the opening round on Friday. Coach Eric Bollette's Newton teams have finished second twice in four previous appearances at the duals.
Camden Catholic, this year's top seed, is the three-time defending champion.
Wrestling begins on Friday at 4:30 p.m., with the second round to follow at 6:30. Action resumes at 11 a.m. on Saturday with rounds to follow at 1 and 3 p.m.

Central has the edge at 113 or 120 (with Nace), 126 or 132 (with Dinmore), 145, 152, 160 and 170. Some potential rematches tonight from the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament: Nace pinned Adetula, Larkin beat Butka, 5-0, Witner beat Greer, 9-7, and Pacheco pinned Auricchio. Bonus points aplenty for both teams in this one. Red Devils need to minimize bonus points and reverse that 195 loss at HWS to pull this off. It's possible, but I see this as a 7-7 split and Warren Hills getting six bonus-point wins. Streaks should be fuming over that loss to P'burg.
Prediction: Warren Hills, 33-25.

Delaware Valley also dealing with skin issues
Delaware Valley's wrestling team became the second Hunterdon County squad to shut down with skin disease. Terriers coach Andy Fitz on Monday confirmed that two of his wrestlers have skin issues, and that all dual meets scheduled for this week have either been postponed or cancelled.
"We're dealing with it," said Fitz, whose team was scheduled to wrestle Manville this evening. "We hope to be practicing again by Thursday. We have no competitions at all this week."
Del Val (6-3) was also scheduled to host Ridge on Wednesday before traveling to Warren Hills on Friday for a big Skyland Conference Raritan Division showdown. The Terriers were to close out the week with a quad meet at Kittatinny that also included Timber Creek and Hackettsown. That will now be a tri-meet, minus Del Val.
Fitz said the tentative schedule for next week has his team hosting Ridge and Somerville on Monday; at Warren Hills either Tuesday or Wednesday; home against North Warren on Thursday and the Region 5 Duals as originally scheduled on Saturday, Feb. 4. Del Val has not been on the mat since a 41-12 loss at Phillipsburg this past Wednesday.
"If Warren Hills is hosting a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex basketball game on Wednesday [Feb. 1], the match will be on Tuesday. If not, we will wrestle on Wednesday," Fitz said. "We've lost a total of nine dual meets right now with the [Saturday] snow and [skin]."
North Hunterdon's wrestling team also is on hiatus as three unnamed wrestlers and one assistant coach contracted a skin disease this past week. The Lions competed in last weekend's Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament and have not taken the mat since a 38-26 loss to rival Voorhees last Wednesday.
Coach Tim Flynn confirmed that his team is dealing with skin issues, but does not know where or how his wrestlers may have gotten it. He hopes to have his team back on the mat by next weekend.
North Hunterdon (10-2) was already scheduled to be off until Friday against Montgomery, a Skyland Conference Delaware Division match for both schools.
All three counties recently participated in the HWS Tournament at Hunterdon Central. So far, only Del Val and North Hunterdon have reported skin issues. Fitz said it was unclear where all of this may have originated.
"Where we got it from doesn't matter, we're dealing with it," Fitz said. "Hopefully we'll have everyone back for sectionals and districts."
Del Val is currently the No. 1 seed in the Central Jersey, Group 2 sectional playoffs that begin on Tuesday, Feb. 6. The cutoff date to qualify is this Saturday. The Terriers will be locked in with their current point total as a result of no matches this week.
