Baseball: Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex pairings, seeds

Pairings and seeds for the seventh annual Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament were released on Monday.

The tournament gets underway on Wednesday with first-round games and continues with second-round action on Saturday. Unlike previous years, the top four seeds receive byes into the quarterfinals, which will be played on Saturday, April 30.

The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, May 7. The championship game will be contested at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 at Phillipsburg High School.

North Hunterdon is the defending champion after a 3-0 win over Pope John in the 2015 final. Hunterdon Central has won a tournament-best three titles (2010, 2013-14). Pope John (2011) and Phillipsburg (2012) are the other schools to win championships.

The official seeds and pairings for this year' tournament were determined using a team's power points by Saturday's cutoff. Head-to-head criteria was also used to construct the brackets, which are unusual to say the least. The top four seeds receiving byes is puzzling because a 20-team bracket where all teams play on Saturday could have easily been used. The bottom eight seeds could have played in the prelims on Wednesday. Field hockey also adopted this format in the fall and it was not well received. The use of power points, while a good idea in theory, makes no sense when all teams have not played the same amount of games.

Coach's comment: "I'm looking for our six seniors to set the tone this season. If they lead like they're capable of -- on and off the field -- I believe we have the pieces in place to be very successful."

Outlook: County Seaters have steadily improved the last five seasons -- going from five wins in 2011, to eight wins in '12, 10 wins in '13, 11 in '14 and 14 in '15 -- since winning 17 games in '10. There is enough talent returning to believe this team will make a major move forward this spring. Pitching will be the biggest question heading into the season with Woodworth and Duckworth atop the rotation, along with Woolf. Madeo is a solid player and will help lead an offense that should be able to produce enough runs. If the pitching is there, this team could contend in the division.

Delaware Valley Terriers

Coach: Marty White (117-138, 13th season).

Outlook: Last season started off on a sour note with a season-ending injury to Brown. However, Schaible filled the role of ace and will be one of the top pitchers in the area again this spring. The rest of the staff should be able to keep this team in games. Hlinka is coming off a fine freshman season and will lead the offense, while Kulik will be the No. 2 on the mound and newcomer Scanlan the No. 3 and top reliever. It's been awhile since the Terriers, who are young, made some noise, but this could be the year to push Bernards and Somerville for a division title.

Hackettstown Tigers

Coach: Gary Poyer (182-134, 15th season).

2015 record: 19-6, 6-2 NJAC Freedom Division (first).

Outlook: Tigers are back on track -- going 5-3 in the North 2, Group 2 playoffs the past three seasons since a four-win campaign in 2012. Last year's group dropped a 3-1 decision to a tough Bernards team in the sectional final. Pitching, which was a strength last year, is a question this spring, but as Poyer pointed out, the offense should be strong and could take the pressure off the pitchers. Franco was outstanding as a junior, while Carida is a solid leadoff hitter. Expect this team to battle Jefferson for the division title and contend in the postseason.

Hunterdon Central Red Devils

Coach: Mike Raymond (312-109-1, 16th season).

Coach's comment: "This year's team is young and inexperienced in many positions. We are getting great leadership from our seniors who understand what it takes to win and the sacrifices it takes to be successful. Our guys are excited to start the season and add to our championship tradition."

Outlook: Red Devils are looking to overcome the loss of 18 seniors, who helped guide last year's team to an appearance in the Central Jersey, Group 4 final, where it dropped a 5-3 decision in eight innings to Old Bridge. McManus (Rhode Island) was the top offensive player in the area and a tremendous leadoff hitter, so his loss is big in itself. But Toke (Seton Hall) will be a major force in this lineup. For once, pitching is a question from the standpoint of varsity experience. Woltersdorf and Toke will lead that group on the mound. Expect this team to challenge once again for the division title and make a run in the sectional playoffs.

North Hunterdon Lions

Coach: Mike Kane (70-47, fifth season).

2014 record: 21-9 20-10, 7-6 10-4 Skyland Conference Raritan Division (third).

Outlook: Lions are coming off back-to-back 20-win season since 2010, just the ninth and 10th times in program history, and capturing the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament title. Speaking of which, with the tournament constructed so an ace carry a team, expect this group to be in the title hunt again behind Wilson, who is headed to Old Dominion in the fall. A ton of offense was lost to graduation, so scoring runs may be a question to start the season. If the offense contributes, look for this team to challenge in the division and for another county championship. Wilson gives the Lions a chance to win every game he's on the mound.

North Warren Patriots

Coach: Jim Haupt (238-164, 18th season).

2015 record: 10-12, 6-2 NJAC Colonial Division (T-first).

Coach's comment: "We lost some quality seniors, but look to be very much improved over last season. Consistency on a daily basis will be the key to our success. Our major weakness is depth, as we only have 15 players on the varsity team.."

Outlook: Patriots claimed a three-way share of the division title in their first season in the Colonial Division. As Haupt said, the lack of depth could be a factor with injuries, so staying healthy will be key if this team is to make another run. The veteran coach expects to be better across the board as pitching and offense were very inconsistent a year ago. DePrimo is the ace and will give the Pats a strong chance to win when he's on the hill.

Phillipsburg Stateliners

Coach: Dylan Sapir (first season).

2015 record: 6-19 5-22, 1-12 1-13 Skyland Conference Raritan Division (fifth).

Coach's comment: "There is a lot of competition at several spots. We have a few sophomores who are pushing to get innings on the mound and in the field."

Outlook: The 'Liners are on their third head coach in as many years as Sapir, a former assistant, is back with the program after a one-year hiatus. He takes over for Mike Rossetti, who went 6-19 last season. Sapir inherits a program that has gone 58-99 the last five seasons, including last-place finishes in 2014 and '15, so the first order of business is establishing a winning culture. Pitching will certainly be a question with Langworthy as the only returning arm with varsity experience. With nine seniors, P'burg will need to rely on their leadership as it looks to gain consistency. Looks like it will be another rebuilding season.

South Hunterdon Eagles

Coach: John Augusta (first season).

2015 record: 6-16, 4-8 Skyland Conference Mountain Division (T-fifth).

Outlook: Eagles, who won advanced to the Central Jersey, Group 1 quarterfinals in 2015, have a new coach for the second time in three seasons as Augusta, who previously served an assistant coach on Mike Raymond's staff at Hunterdon Central from 2000-15, takes over a program that went 44-120 over the the past nine seasons and 12-31 the past two under Cory Weingart. Establishing a winning culture is the first order of business, something Augusta knows about from his time just a ways up Route 31. Scamuffa, Robinson and Rose are veterans who will be atop a rotation that has some question marks with the loss of ace Smiegocki. Scoring runs against the better teams was an issue last year. It won't happen overnight, but expect South to show improvement as the season wears on.

Voorhees Vikings

Coach: Cory Kent (9-32, third season).

2015 record: 9-13, 4-6 Skyland Conference Valley Division (T-third).

Outlook: Vikings are coming off a bounce-back season with a nine-win campaign and a sectional playoff berth after going 0-19 in 2014, including 0-10 in divisional play. Numbers are good with plenty of returning players this season. Pitching was a clear weakness last year, so the Vikes will be counting on Wernicki and Luke Twill to lead the rotation. If the offense can take the pressure off with runs -- scoring was also a  problem in 2015 with an average of 4.2 runs per game -- this team has a chance to improve on its win total.

Warren Hills Blue Streaks

Coach: Mike Quinto (143-162, 12th season).

Outlook: Blue Streaks are coming off a sub-.500 season despite being one of the most experienced teams in the area a year ago. The program and community mourns the tragic death of Evan Murray, who was one of the top players in the field and on the mound. The Streaks will wear a patch on their uniforms in his memory. This is a program still looking to get past the first round of the sectional playoffs after early exits in 2009, '10, '11, '12, '14 and '15. Veneziano is solid atop the rotation, while Woolf is a three-year starter and one of the team's best defensive players. Hanisak takes over behind the plate. The main question, as it was last spring, will be if this team can produce enough runs.

High Point Wildcats

Outlook: Wildcats showed considerable improvement under Ellis, who led the program to 16 wins, up from 7 in 2014, last season. Pitching seems the biggest question this season with the loss of 91 innings (Schulok and Risdon) to graduation. Costello should be the ace (20 innings last year). Offensively, this team should be in good shape with several key bats returning from a unit that averaged nearly seven runs per game in '15. Expect the Wildcats to finish in the top half of a very tough division.

Hopatcong Chiefs

Coach: Jason Mulvihill (7-14, second season).

2015 record: 7-14, 1-7 NJAC Colonial Division (T-fourth).

Outlook: Chiefs have gone 78-132 over the past nine years (12-57 the last three seasons), but they showed marked improvement in Mulvihill's first season at the helm. Ammiano is one of the best players in the tri-county area. He led the offense with a .406 average and the pitching staff with 52 strikeouts in 58 1/3 innings last season. Delrosso should be the No. 2 pitcher, but there are big questions after those two arms, though Yarosz should help on the mound. Hitting in the Homer Dome, the Chiefs' home field, shouldn't be an issue, but last year's team struggled to produce runs on the road against the better teams on the schedule. Getting to .500 will be the main goal and the biggest challenge.

Kittatinny Cougars

Coach: TJ Orlando (8-39, third season).

2015 record: 3-22, 1-7 NJAC Colonial Division (T-fourth).

Outlook: Cougars, who have gone 26-54-1 over the previous four seasons, have some work to do if they are to turn the corner this season. Orlando is excited about five seniors who have come out for the team, including Scrivani, who has been a star wrestler for the Cougars but has never played baseball in high school. Tyler Vough and Chris Litterio will lead a very young pitching staff, which must gain consistency if this team is going to approach .500. The bats will also need to contribute after last year's team scored 19 runs combined over its final eight games -- all losses.

Lenape Valley Patriots

Coach: Bob Klinck (98-95, ninth season).

2015 record: 7-14, 4-4 NJAC Freedom Division (fourth).

Outlook: Patriots went from 18 wins to seven last season (went 2-11 after 5-3 start) after capturing the program's first NJAC Freedom Division title in 2014. It was surprising for a team that was expected to challenge for another division championship. The graduation losses were significant -- including Fluke (12 wins and 151 K's the past two seasons) -- but the Pats do have several experienced arms to build around. Expect a bounce-back season in Stanhope.

Newton Braves

Coach: John Selitto (91-138, 11th season).

Outlook: Braves, as expected, took a bit of a step back last season, despite claiming a three-way share of the Colonial Divison title with North Warren and Wallkill Valley. However, there's a lot to like about this year's squad. As Selitto points out, there is depth on the mound. Van Luvender pitched better than the stats indicate and will be the ace. Cramer leads an offense that should produce more runs than last spring. Luzzi was a pleasant surprise as a sophomore, batting .350 and among the leaders in RBIs. This should be the team to beat in the division race.

Pope John Lions

Coach: Vin Bello (262-173-1, 17th season).

Outlook: Lions, who dropped their final six games in 2015, once again should be major contenders for division and county titles this season behind a solid pitching staff that features Miller and Roberts -- heading to Seton Hall and Marist, respectively -- at the top. Offense may be a question against what is an extremely tough independent schedule. Bello believes that Sanchez and Millar will have to chip in with the bats for this team to win 15 games this season.

Sparta Spartans

Coach: Sam Slobodzian (294-194-3, 20th season).

2015 record: 8-16, 2-6 NJAC American Division (fifth).

Outlook: Spartans took a big step back last season -- finishing in last place -- after winning 18 games and capturing the NJAC American Division title in 2014. But with what Slobodzian, who is six wins shy of 300, deems a solid starting staff, a bounce-back season appears to be in order. Offensively, this group struggled last season, so scoring runs will be key to a turnaround campaign.

Sussex Tech Mustangs

Coach: Brad Szatkiewicz (22-57, fourth season).

Outlook: Mustangs have gone 0-20 in divisional play since joining the NJAC two seasons ago. As Szatkiewicz said, this will be a challenging season with the heavy graduation losses. The fourth-year coach is excited about the young talent on this year's roster, so improving with each game will be the main goal this spring.

Vernon Vikings

Outlook: Vikings qualified for the North 1, Group 3 playoffs last season -- dropping a 3-1 decision to Montville in the opening round. After going 5-12 following a 5-3 start and losing four extra-inning games, this year's team will need to win some of the close ones if it is to approach .500 and another trip to the postseason. Capuano is the ace of a pretty unproven staff.

Wallkill Valley Rangers

The graduation losses were significant, but Stecher and Walton were among the top players a year ago. If the newcomers can contribute, this group could surprise behind a solid coaching staff.
