Wrestling: Garriques continues tradition in P'burg win

LOPATCONG TWP. -- Phillipsburg wrestling history certainly isn't lost on freshman Owen Garriques, who's grown up with a constant reminder of such greatness in his own home.

Garriques' father, John, was a fan favorite and state runner-up for the Stateliners back in his day in the mid-1990s, but the Centenary University coach's likeable son is quickly making his own mark sporting the Garnet and Grey. Owen's first signature win at 120 pounds helped spark Phillipsburg's 39-22 victory over Delaware Valley on Tuesday night in a Skyland Conference cross-divisional match.

P'burg is now 231-42-2 all-time vs. Hunterdon-Warren schools
P'burg (12-0), ranked No. 10 in the New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20, won eight bouts overall, but none were bigger than Garriques' 5-3 decision over Delaware Valley senior Jake Taylor, a returning state qualifier.

"For him to string a couple [wins] together now, it's great," said first-year head coach Tim Longacre, whose team was coming off a thrilling 28-27 criteria win (most pins) over archrival Easton (Pa.) on Saturday. "He's such a hard worker. He deserves it.

"He normally keeps himself in good position. We're trying to work in some other stuff with him as well, but he's always in a dogfight. We're going to get him there. He's going to be one of those where it doesn't take long to get there."

A late reversal with 33 seconds to go in the third period was the difference, though Garriques (12-12), who's beaten and lost to some tough customers this season, nearly had a takedown and three back points with under a minute to go in the second period after a first-period takedown.

"Yeah, I think so," Garriques said, when asked if this was his biggest win to date. "We've been working on staying calm in those moments and [staying aggressive] against my opponents and not rushing anything.

"I feel like the way that we train, I feel confident in all my positions. I just have belief in my coaches and they put me where I need to be. I can not thank them enough for what they've done for me so far."

Delaware Valley (10-1), ranked No. 14 in the NJWWA poll, had some early momentum despite losing the first three bouts. After getting decked at 285, sophomore Tristan Fawthrop, who was pinned by Anthony Pettinelli earlier this season, and junior Luacs Beyers did their jobs by limiting the damage at 106 and 113, respectively. But the loss at 120 certainly hurt in a match where the Terriers needed just about everything to go their way.

"If we didn't get pinned at 106 and 113, I told my coaches that I thought we'd win the dual meet," said coach Andy Fitz, now 1-13 overall vs. P'burg in his 17 seasons in charge. "The loss at 120 was unfortunate against a very good freshman of theirs and we let some points leak away."

Another tough loss came at 190, when senior Kevin Roman, who bumped up from 175, watched an early lead disappear in a flash as P'burg junior Derek Stone, a dangerous mat wrestler, used an armbar to flatten Roman in 3:49. But by then, the 'Liners had already sealed the deal with senior Liam Packer's pin in the previous bout.

"We knew [Stone] was good on the mat. I advocated letting him up and taking him down," Fitz said. "We got rolling and ended up getting run over with an armbar. It's a learning experience and we'll learn from it."

P'burg will honor its state champs prior to Saturday's match

Phillipsburg, now 39-7 all-time vs. Del Val dating to 1975, was also eager to atone for last season's 33-27 loss on the road in which the coaches took some heat for questionable lineup moves. That win snapped the Terriers' 13-match skid in the series.

"It's great," Longacre said. "When you get beat like last year, those always stick, especially [being at P'burg]. It was a lot of fun. We had a little X on the calendar and we were ready to go. Earlier in the week, we kept it kind of loose and calm. And then, OK, now it's time to go."

Overall, Fitz was pleased with how his team fared in its first test against a state-ranked opponent and with a quick turnaround against No. 12 Hunterdon Central on Wednesday.

Junior Luke Sinkewicz scored an impressive 9-2 win over Johnathon Roth at 165 to avenge a 4-2 loss when they met in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament on Jan. 13. Having to make a lineup move at 144 and 150, sophomores Michael Hasson and Sebastian Dobak battled as heavy underdogs against two of Phillipsburg's best wrestlers in juniors Luke Geleta and Gavin Hawk.

"We had the lineup we wanted. We made the moves we wanted," Fitz said. "I don't second guess any of that. It's just that you need to be perfect when you wrestle P'burg and we were simply very good. That's not good enough against an opponent like this

"We took six weights off a very good team, [along with a] couple other outstanding efforts. We're going to regroup tonight and tomorrow we're going to be ready to roll against Central."

Garriques said that Phillipsburg's rugged schedule also contributed to both his and the team's victory.

"I think it was a big factor. I've wrestled a lot of good kids so I'm used to it," said Garriques, whose uncle, Todd, was a two-time state medalist (third and fifth-sixth) for Hackettstown in the 1991 and '92 state tournaments.

"Every time after a loss the coaches had things for me to work on and we just keep working on it. I like the losses. I don't want to lose, but I like that we can work on things and it can only get me better. It's better to lose here than where it matters at states."

Wrestling: Duals are one hot topic in NJWWA Top 20

You can't beat an old-fashioned quality dual meet when it comes to wrestling. But even to the most casual observer, these golden nuggets have become few and far between over the years -- at least in the public school ranks -- as it's evolved into more of a tournament sport.

It's probably why Phillipsburg's 28-27 win over archrival Easton (Pa.) -- the first one in 86 meetings decided on criteria (most pins, 2-1) -- before a hearty crowd in Warren County on Saturday night was such a treat. But to those old enough to remember the glory days in these parts of Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex, this was the norm two or three nights a week.

Phillipsburg (11-0), ranked No. 10, leads the way once again in the latest New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20, released on Tuesday morning. Hunterdon Central (13-1) moves up one spot to No. 12 following a 35-34 win over No. 13 Mount Olive on Saturday. Delaware Valley (10-0), which has a big week on tap with matches against P'burg (tonight) and Central (Wednesday), rounds out the HWS area contingent at No. 14.

Once upon a time, Delaware Valley vs. Hunterdon Central or North Hunterdon vs. Voorhees or Warren Hills against these schools was standing-room only, as were colossal matches at The Pit involving Phillipsburg against whichever local team or statewide foe was on the upswing at the time. All were must-see events and involved legendary coaches and wrestlers.

The dual meet is part of the fabric in this locale, but not so much elsewhere in the Garden State. In my opinion, the Shore Conference is the only other area where the dual has been as important.

And sure, Phillipsburg vs. Easton in most sports means that much more to those communities. But to a passionate fan base, knocking off the Red Rovers in five straight meetings in wrestling for the first time since reeling off nine in a row from 1963-71, is a huge deal. It also was the closest margin of victory for either program since Easton's 27-26 win in 1984 -- a match that involved three-time PIAA Class AAA state champion Jack Cuvo for the Rovers and the Stateliners' Dave Boncher, a three-time New Jersey state finalist who went on that season to win the first of his two state golds.

Those were good days.

P'burg junior Derek Stone (17-7 at 190 pounds) took home the Brad Weaver Memorial Award (OW) and junior Luke Geleta (21-1 at 144) earned the Easton Lions Club Award (most aggressive), but in what other sport can you lose and still be a hero? That happened to be freshman Anthony Pettinelli, who battled to only surrender a major decision in the final bout at 106 pounds on Saturday.

Got to love wrestling.

Tough at the top

St. Joseph-Montvale, the No. 1 ranked team in the NJWWA Top 20, will have to scramble in order to have the 10 matches wrestled that are needed to be considered for qualification for the NJSIAA team tournaments, which begin on Feb. 5.

As of Monday morning, the reigning Non-Public A champion Green Knights had wrestled seven matches and only have two duals scheduled for this week. They wrestle at Old Tappan on Wednesday night and host No. 11 Bergen Catholic on Friday.

Delaware Valley eyes a three-peat in Group 1

The NJSIAA regulations for the team tournament read the following:

"Teams must have wrestled at least 10 dual meets against NJSIAA member schools to be considered for Power Point rankings. There will be no exceptions or waivers to this rule.''

NJSIAA wrestling tournament director Howie O'Neill had this brief statement on Monday afternoon:

"A school has contacted the NJSIAA questioning the number of matches needed and a response has been sent to that school,'' said O'Neill, who declined to comment further.

We'll see how this goes, but High Point received no quarter from the NJSIAA back in 2009, when the Wildcats, ranked No. 1 in the state at the time, were disqualified from entering the sectionals for not meeting the required 70 percent rule against in-state competition. That rule has since been eliminated.

St. Joseph-Montvale would have already had 10 matches in the books, but withdrew from the Catholic School Duals at Christian Brothers Academy on Jan. 6 due to injuries and illness amongst several of its wrestlers

The cutoff for qualification is Saturday. The tournament will be seeded on Jan. 30 and begin Feb. 5 with the public sectional quarterfinal and semifinal matches and conclude on Feb. 11 at Rutgers University's Jersey Mike's Arena, with the seven group championship matches.

P'burg will honor its 33 state champs on Saturday
The top eight teams in the final power points after head-to-head results are factored in will be seeded into the public school sections. The two statewide Non-Public groups will be seeded by a committee.

Key results

Among the notable results from last week that are reflected in this week's rankings are:

Don Bosco Prep, ranked No. 6, defeating Bergen Catholic, 32-30, for its first win over the Crusaders since 2010; No. 18 West Essex defeating No. 20 Seton Hall Prep, 30-23. That result enabled West Essex to enter the rankings for the first time this season.

Brick Memorial, which was ranked No. 20 last week, dropped out after a 36-27 loss to unranked Paulsboro.

Del Val's last road win in the series was 42-9 at The Pit on Feb. 1, 2006. The Terriers' other victories came in 1975, '82, '84, '93 and '05.

217 -- Jr. Branden Sozanski (4-5) or Jr. Brian Nicholson (3-2) vs. Sr. Nathan Smith (17-9).

287 -- Sr. Kyle Cooke (13-4) vs. Sr. John Wargo (18-1).

Breakdown: This is the first matchup of the season between state-ranked teams in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex area as well as the first against an NJWWA Top 20 opponent for Delaware Valley, which is seeking two straight wins over P'burg for the first time since 2005-06. In addition, this kicks off a tough stretch for the visitors, who will face No. 13 Hunterdon Central on Wednesday and Warren Hills on Saturday. ... Phillipsburg is coming off a huge 28-27 win on criteria (2-1 in pins) over archrival Easton (Pa.). No doubt the 'Liners remember the loss last season to the Terriers, in which the P'burg coaching staff was second-guessed by many for questionable lineup decisions late in that one. It also doesn't hurt having the home crowd on your side. On paper, P'burg, which won three of five head-to-meetings at the HWS Tournament on Jan. 13, rates as a solid favorite and that normally dictates the underdog making a few lineup moves. Del Val could opt to bump Levy away from Hawk to try for a split at 152 and 159, but the flip would be necessary.
P'burg is 230-42-2 all-time vs. Hunterdon-Warren schools
It's also hard to imagine Fitz bumping out someone between 159-177 or running everyone up through 215 in order to do so. Straight up, P'burg has the advantage at 108, 115, 146, 152, 167, 177, 217 and 287. That's eight bouts with Del Val getting the nod at 122, 128, 134, 140 and 192. Let's call 157 a tossup, though I'd lean Day in that one. Here are the HWS head-to-head results: Pettinelli p. Fawthrop in 3:53; Perez p. McWilliams in 3:13; Roche md. G. Geleta 14-3; Roth d. Sinkewicz, 4-2; Packer md. Roman, 10-1. ... Even if Del Val wins 159 and flips the script at 167, both tough tasks, P'burg is likely to pile up a good share of bonus points -- and probably save some from the HWS results -- in at least six bouts. It also would not be surprising to see the 'Liners win one they aren't supposed to. It's a tough matchup all-around for the Terriers, who will have to regroup quickly with Central looming nearly 24 hours after this one.

Prediction: Phillipsburg, 36-19.

Wrestling: Snow steals mat shows (HWS rankings)

Anyone else already sick of snow? It sure has thrown a wrench into the high school wrestling schedule around the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex area as all of Friday's slate was wiped out along with Saturday's Jack Welch Duals at Moorestown.

That annual two-day event had already been paired down to one day as Newton and Warren Hills were set to face each other as part of a five-match afternoon.

P'burg is 7-10 all-time against Southern
The chaotic week started with Phillipsburg's scheduled home match against Southern on Wednesday being knocked off the slate. The Stateliners, ranked No. 10 in the latest New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20, were rightfully concerned about the prospect of four weigh-ins this week -- with the big one against archrival Easton (Pa.) looming tonight -- after the previous week's Skyland Conference match vs. Watchung Hills at The Pit was pushed back to Monday.

Official word of the cancelation vs. No. 5 Southern came early Tuesday morning despite rumblings of this possibility swirling during last Saturday's HWS Tournament in Lopatcong Township. You have to question why this remains on the regular-season schedule as both are annually among the top schools in Group 5, having met in the 2022 semifinals (P'burg won 27-25) and the title match last season (a 41-14 win for Southern after a 41-12 victory in the regular-season matchup).

Needless to say, P'burg needed no additional distractions heading into the Easton match, which should be a dandy (Open Mike has a win for Easton, 30-28). The 'Liners should have an edge being at home and with 14 weights (Pennsylvania has 13), but we could see some crazy stuff on the scale as it's plus-four pounds (110, etc.). There are several key tossups as well, including a pair of potential rematches from the Bethlehem Holiday Classic.

Word is that the match will be contested on a riser, like the NCAA finals, which should create some interesting sightlines for the Stateliner faithful in the front row of the bleachers. P'burg has won four straight meetings and seven of the previous nine, but Easton owns a 64-21 advantage all-time dating to 1947.

Tough sledding

Friday's schedule originally included a pair of Hunterdon County matchups as Delaware Valley was set to begin a brutal stretch against North Hunterdon, while Voorhees was slated to face Hunterdon Central at the Field House.

Del Val (8-0 overall, 3-0 division), which is seeking a third straight Group 1 title, looks to inch closer toward securing the Skyland Conference Raritan Division title against Ridge (9-1, 2-0) as part of a tri-meet with Hanover Park on Saturday in Basking Ridge.

Coach Andy Fitz's team is facing a dauting five-day span next week with matches against Phillipsburg (Tuesday), Hunterdon Central (Wednesday) and Warren Hills (Saturday, Jan. 26) on tap. The Terriers have lost three straight vs. Central since a 35-32 win on Jan. 3, 2020. The North match is now set for Jan. 30, as Del Val looks to snap a six-match skid in that series with its first win since 2017.

Now, onto this week's rankings:

1. Phillipsburg (10-0) -- Stateliners opened the week with a 60-18 drubbing of Watchung Hills in a Skyland Conference Delaware Division clash on Monday at The Pit, followed by a 55-12 waxing of Hanover Park in an independent matchup on Thursday. Juniors Luke Geleta (20-1 at 144) and Gavin Hawk (20-1 at 150), who picked up career win Nos. 86 and 91, respectively, logged a pair of pins as P'burg racked up 16 in the two victories.

Up next: Easton (Pa.) at home tonight; Delaware Valley at home on Tuesday.

Central retains the victory Cup with NH for a second straight year
2. Hunterdon Central (10-1) -- Red Devils rolled to a 44-19 win over North Hunterdon in a Skyland Conference Delaware Division tilt on Wednesday in advance of a key showdown against Mount Olive, ranked No. 12 in the NJWWA Top 20, as part of a Saturday quad at the Field House. Senior Thomas Brunetti (20-0 at 190) is sitting on 79 career victories as he looks to join fellow senior Anthony Rossi (20-0 at 120) in the school's 100 wins club. Senior Ahmed Hussain (16-6 at 132) was named the Outstanding Wrestler for the match vs. North.

Up next: Mount Olive, St.. Thomas Aquinas, Sayreville at home today; at Delaware Valley on Wednesday.

3. Delaware Valley (8-0) -- Terriers cruised to a 57-11 win over Watchung Hills (winning 11 bouts) in a Skyland Conference cross-divisional matchup on Wednesday. Senior state placer Matt Roche (15-1 at 132) set the tone with technical fall in the opening bout as coach Andy Fitz's team racked up six pins and three techs.

Up next: Hanover Park at Ridge today; at Phillipsburg on Tuesday; Hunterdon Central at home on Wednesday.

Kittatinny is 36-17 all-time vs. Newton
4. Kittatinny (12-1) -- Cougars secured the NJAC Freedom Division title with a 57-20 win over crosstown rival Newton on Wednesday -- extending its win streak to five straight against the Braves since a 37-28 loss in 2019. Legendary coach John Gill is 36-12 all-time vs. Newton and his teams have captured or shared 18 conference titles. This is the Sussex County school's first outright championship since 2018 (Colonial Division) and first in the Freedom Division since '14. Senior Bryce Coesfeld (19-3 at 175) is at 84 career wins, while junior Ethan Dalling (20-2 at 165) is two shy of 80.

Up next: at Sparta on Friday.

5. Pope John (6-3) -- Lions opened the week by going 2-1 in a quad, scoring wins over St. Augustine Prep (36-28) and St. Benedict's Prep (55-24), while dropping a 52-24 decision to host Bergen Catholic, ranked No. 11 in the NJWWA Top 20, on Monday. Coach Mark Piotrowsky's team also fell, 48-30, to No. 12 Mount Olive in an NJAC American Division clash on Wednesday before Thursday's 47-33 win over Parsippany Hills. Junior Carson Walsh (18-3 at 132), two-time state medalist and three-time HWS champion, improved to 79-13 overall.

Up next: Holy Cross at St. John Vianney today.

6. High Point (4-4) -- Wildcats came up short in a 39-24 loss to Jefferson in a battle for second place in the NJAC Freedom Division. The loss to the Falcons (11-40 all-time vs. the 'Cats) was the program's first since 2001 and it snapped High Point's 23-match win streak in the series in which the average margin of victory was 27 points during that span. Coach John Gardner's teams are 24-4 overall vs. Jefferson, which could host a return match should both advance in the North 1, Group 2 sectional tournament in a few weeks. High Point, which was pinned in a key bout at 215 while holding a 7-1 lead, is hoping to have senior 138-pounder Ty Woods (leg injury) back soon.

Up next: North Hunterdon, West Essex at North Warren today; DePaul at home on Monday; at Morris Knolls on Tuesday.
