Not much. How 'bout you?
A line from one of my favorite all-time songs by England Dan and John Ford Coley. That goes back some, but I digress.
Sorry I haven't been on in awhile. With the high school sports season in hiatus and my regular full-time gig at MLB.com, I just haven't had the time.
I got the bug to blog when I recently learned that a former field hockey player I covered in recent years has accepted a head coaching position. Kacy Friend, a standout player on some great Pen Argyl Area High School teams in Pennsylvania, is the new coach at Colonial League-rival Saucon Valley in Hellertown, Pa.
Friend was a star midfielder for Pen Argyl under coach Fran Rowley (formerly Fran Hall) in the mid-2000s. Friend's mother, Alice, was a very successful coach at Saucon and I believe she will be on her daughter's staff this fall.
That makes two former players that I covered getting head coaching jobs, Taylor Webb is set for her first year in charge at Voorhees, her alma mater.
Webb was also a star midfielder in high school and played for very successful coach Ann Bonavita, who was an unofficial assistant last season for the Vikings in Beth Stocker's final year at the helm. I'm sure Bonavita will serve in some capacity on Webb's staff.
I predict that both Friend and Webb will be outstanding coaches, much like they were as players. Both ladies showed great leadership on their high school teams and were always very classy on and off the field.
The fall sports season is right around the corner and I'm looking forward to the field hockey season and covering some football games this year which I haven't done much of in recent years. Camps for both will be in full swing in another week.
I also promise to hit the blog more until then.
