Field hockey: Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex rankings

We're off an running in the seventh annual Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament as six preliminary round games were contested on Saturday.

Due to a new format, the top four seeds all received byes into next weekend's quarterfinals. On tap for this Saturday are four first-round games, including No. 11 Phillipsburg at No. 6 Kittatinny in a rematch of last year's quarterfinal, won by the Cougars, 4-0.

First off, we addressed this last week, but to seed the 18 teams solely on power points doesn't work. For one, the points do not factor in strength of schedule. Thus, we have Voorhees as the No. 2 seed and Warren Hills as the No. 3, when even the casual fan knows those are the top two teams in the area. No slight to No. 1 Newton and No. 4 Hackettstown, which are both undefeated, but those teams have not faced the same kind of top competition.

Also, why is the bracket divided so that some teams are still off this Saturday? That could easily have been avoided by using a 20-man bracket. There's no reason every team still alive should not be playing in the second round.

Perhaps it's time to implement a seeding committee for next year -- taking into account power points, head-to-head, etc., but not letting the points through six games (some didn't even have that many games, ie Hunterdon Central which was 4-0 and drew the No. 8 seed).

One look at the history of this event shows where the power lies. Coming into the tournament, Hunterdon-Warren schools were 64-54 overall in tournament play, while Sussex was 37-47. Only High Point (2011, '12) and Newton (2009) have ever reached the finals and no team has won a title that was decided on the field. The Braves shared the championship with Warren Hills in '09 because the final game was never played due to state tournament conflicts for both schools.

Now onto this week's rankings:

1. Voorhees (7-2) -- Vikings are coming off a big week, dropping a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to state-ranked Madison on Thursday before rebounding with a 2-0 win over Group 1 power Shore Regional on Saturday. Senior forward Kathryn Roncoroni continues her assault on the school record books with an 8-goal week, including three in Monday's 3-1 win over Skyland Conference Valley Division rival Bernards. Roncoroni leads all scorers in the HWS area with 19 goals.

Up next: North Plainfield at home on Tuesday; Franklin at home on Thursday.

2. Warren Hills (6-1) -- Blue Streaks went 2-0 last week, scoring a 6-1 win over No. 5 Phillipsburg on Monday before a 7-1 thumping of Hillsborough under the lights on Thursday. The week was cut short due to the tragic death of quarterback Evan Murray on Friday, as the school cancelled all events on Saturday, including a scheduled game at home against Eastern, the top team in New Jersey. Junior forward Dani Profita scored three goals last week, including two against the Stateliners, raising her season total to 12 and giving her 51 overall as she became just the sixth player in program history to reach the 50-goal mark -- joining Sydney Muntone (77 from 2011-14), Lindsey Schott (72 from 2008-11), Nikki Profita (64 from 2011-14), Niki Miller (61 from 2009-12) and Megan Springmeyer (54 from 2004-07).

Up next: at Bridgewater-Raritan on Tuesday; North Hunterdon at home on Thursday.

3. Hunterdon Central (6-0) -- Red Devils still rolling with three more wins last week -- including back-to-back shutouts of Montgomery (3-0 on Thursday) and North Hunterdon (6-0 on Saturday). Senior forward Maddie Freeman scored a pair of goals with one assist last week, while junior midfielder Nikki Freeman added three goals and one assist, including two goals in the win over North, which raised Central to 7-6 all-time in tri-county games and gave coach Jenn Sponzo her 230th career win. Senior goalie Molly Lafferty combined for six saves in the three wins.

Up next: Phillipsburg at home on Tuesday; Bridgewater-Raritan at home on Thursday; Wallkill Valley at home in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex first round.

4. Hackettstown (7-0) -- Tigers have yet to allow a goal this season as they rattled off three more victories last week, including NJAC Freedom Division victories over Lenape Valley (5-0 on Monday) and High Point (5-0 this Monday). Sandwiched in between was a 7-0 pasting of North Warren on Thursday. Junior forward Molly Gorczyca has been on fire this season, scoring eight goals in the three wins, including back-to-back hat tricks against North and High Point. She leads the team with 19 goals entering Tuesday's action. Senior goalie Rose Bishop made a total of eight saves in those wins. First test coming on Thursday against Mendham, which went to the North 2, Group 3 final in 2014.

Up next: at Mendham on Thursday.

5. Newton (7-0) -- Braves also didn't allow a goal through seven games, squeaking out a 1-0 win over No. 10 Wallkill Valley on Monday. Junior forward Kate Barbato scored the decisive goal off an assist from junior forward Nicole Rizzo. Barbato also struck for a pair of goals in a 2-0 win over Lenape Valley on Thursday. Coach Lisa Bechtel's team earned the top seed for the HWS tourney and will be looking to reach the final for the first time since 2009. Braves will not play a county game until next weekend's quarterfinals.

Up next: at Morristown-Beard on Wednesday night; at North Warren on Saturday.

6. Phillipsburg (4-3) -- Stateliners are making a push to crack the Top 5 following a 3-1 win over High Point on Saturday in a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex preliminary matchup. That win was coming off losses to Skyland Conference powers Warren Hills (6-1 on Monday) and Bridgewater-Raritan (2-0 on Thursday). Senior forward Kylie Marhold, sophomore forward Abby Evans and senior midfielder/back Lacey O'Dowd scored goals against High Point, while junior goalie Samantha DeRogatis made eight saves.

Up next: at Hunterdon Central on Tuesday; at Kittatinny on Saturday in Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex first round.

7. Belvidere (5-2-1) -- County Seaters went 2-0-1 last week, capping the slate with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bernards, which shared the Skyland Conference Valley Division title last season. Senior forward Katie Spadaccini connected for the goal in that one, assisted by junior back Rachel Dultz. Earlier in the week, coach Beth Franceschino's team scored wins over Mount St. Mary (1-0 on Monday) and North Plainfield (3-1 on Tuesday) in a pair of Mountain Division matchups. Senior forward/midfielder Hannah Koch scored two goals vs North Plainfield, while freshman Maddie Call had a goal against Mount St. Mary.

Up next: at Delaware Valley on Tuesday; South Hunterdon at home on Thursday; South Hunterdon at home on Saturday in Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex first round.

8. South Hunterdon (4-4) -- Eagles got to .500 with three wins last week, including a 2-1 win over Delaware Valley in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex prelims. Junior forward Carly Leary notched a goal and an assist, while sophomore forward Julia Kreider had a goal in the win. Kreider also struck for a pair of goals in Thursday's 5-0 win over Franklin, while Leary had a goal and an assist in that one as well.

Up next: at Bernards on Tuesday; at Belvidere on Thursday; at Belvidere on Saturday in Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex first round.

9. Sparta (5-2-1) -- Spartans holding steady in the nine-hole after a 2-1 week, including a 6-1 loss to Mendham last Tuesday before rebounding with wins over Vernon (5-0 on Friday) and Pope John (3-0 on Saturday in HWS prelims). Senior forward Rhett Curran scored a pair of goals in the win over Vernon, the Spartans' first in NJAC American Division play this year. Junior forward Jackie Hallack (5 goals, 5 assists) had at least one point in the first eight games of the season.

Up next: Pope John at home on Tuesday; Lenape Valley at home on Saturday in Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex first round.

10. Wallkill Valley (6-4-1) -- Rangers went 3-0 last week before a tough 1-0 loss to No. 5 Newton on Monday ended the streak. Sophomore forward Morgan Carr led the way offensively in the wins, scoring four goals in Saturday's 6-1 win over Vernon in a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex matchup. Senior midfielder Leah Struble had three goals and two assists in the week, including two goals in a 4-0 win over North Warren in an NJAC Colonial Division clash.

Up next: Hackensack at home on Wednesday; at Hunterdon Central on Saturday in Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex first round.

On the bubble: Kittatinny (5-2).

Field hockey: Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex pairings

The seventh annual Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex tournament gets under way on Saturday with six preliminary round games.

Here's is this year's complete schedule:

Prelims on Saturday, Sept. 26 at the higher seeds, with the winners advancing to the four pre-quarterfinal round contests on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the higher seeds. The quarterfinals are slated for Saturday, Oct. 10 at the higher seeds with the semifinals to be played on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The championship game will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24 on the turf at Hackettstown's Morrison Field. Warren Hills posted a 5-0 win over Voorhees in last year's title game, the Warren County school's fourth HWS championship and second in a row.

In a new twist this season, all schools were seeded strictly on power points and housed in one 18-team bracket. Power points through a team's first six games, or if fewer than six, played up to and including Wednesday's cutoff were used in seeding process. In two head-to-head cases, teams jumped only the school directly above or below.

Warren Hills and Voorhees, originally the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds, traded spots based on the Vikings' 2-1 win on Sept. 15. In addition, Phillipsburg jumped over Delaware Valley for the No. 11 seed due to the Stateliners' 6-0 victory on Sept. 8.

The top four seeds receive byes into the quarterfinals.

Preliminary matchups for Saturday

17-North Hunterdon (1-3) at 8-Hunterdon Central (4-0)

16-Vernon (1-5) at 9-Wallkill Valley (4-3-1)

Field hockey: Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex rankings

It's that time again to start talking about the seventh annual Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament, which gets underway with preliminary games on Saturday.

There's a new format this year as the 18 teams will be seeded on power points (six-game maximum) as opposed to being split into two nine-team brackets -- Hunterdon-Warren and Sussex. Obviously, this is a change that's been needed for a few years now. The strength lies in the Hunterdon-Warren area once again this season with Voorhees and Warren Hills as the undisputed top two teams.

Seeds and pairings are expected to be released early this week. Let's look at how the teams line up by power points entering the week. These totals are unofficial.

1. Voorhees 61; 2. Hackettstown 58.5; 3. Newton 56.5; 4. Warren Hills 53; 5. Wallkill Valley 47; 6. Kittatinny 46.5; 7. (tie) Belvidere and Sparta 46; 9. Lenape Valley 40; 10. (tie) Delaware Valley and Hunterdon Central 39; 12. Phillipsburg 36; 13. North Warren 19; 14. South Hunterdon 18; 15. (tie) High Point and Vernon 16; 17. North Hunterdon 14; 18. Pope John 13.

Now, two things jump out here.

Warren Hills as the No. 4 seed would be absurd, potentially setting up a rematch with Voorhees, which scored a 2-1 win over the Blue Streaks on Tuesday night, in the semifinals. Vikes also made a nice pickup this week by getting a game with Madison on Thursday. The game with Warren Hills was another classic installment to a great rivalry. You also couldn't beat the atmosphere under the lights and on turf. It's a crying shame too that Voorhees still plays home games on a sub-par grass field.

"It's great for the girls to get the same opportunity that boys get every Friday [for football]," said Vikes coach Taylor Webb on the nighttime contest on turf. "These teams love to play each other. There's a mutual respect."

Also, how could the Streaks be that far behind in the power points with a win over Group 2 runner-up Madison? If the committee doesn't take into account the strength of schedule and leaves the brackets as is, that would be a shame. No slight to Hackettstown or Newton, but Warren Hills, the defending champ and Group 3 winner last year, deserves the No. 2 seed.

Hunterdon Central also is behind the 8-ball in points with only three games to date.

Stay tuned her for all of the news and coverage of the tri-county event. Now onto this week's rankings.

1. Voorhees (4-1) -- Vikings have reeled off four straight wins since a 2-0 loss to state power West Essex in the season opener. Senior forward Kathryn Roncoroni had a huge week, scoring twice in a 2-1 win over No. 2 Warren Hills on Tuesday and getting the hat trick in Saturday's 7-0 win over Mount St. Mary in the annual Save the Cherubs charity game. Roncoroni raised her school-record goals total to 101 on Saturday, as the Vikes' all-time leading scorer and American University recruit continues her rapid pace. Voorhees also scored a 4-0 win over Delaware Valley on Wednesday.

Up next: Somerville at home on Monday; at Madison on Thursday; Shore at home on Saturday.

2. Warren Hills (4-1) -- Blue Streaks rebounded from a tough 2-1 loss to Voorhees on Tuesday -- snapping their 10-game home win streak dating to 2014 -- with an 8-1 thumping of Montgomery and a 9-0 blasting of Ridge. Junior forward Dani Profita logged five goals in the three games, including two each in the victories along with a combined five assists. Profita leads the Streaks with nine goals this season and has 49 for her career -- needing one more to become just the sixth player in program history to reach 50. Senior forwards Katie Thompson and Megan Thompson each had hat tricks against Ridge.

Up next: at Phillipsburg on Monday; Hillsborough at home on Thursday; Eastern at home on Saturday.

3. Hunterdon Central (3-0) -- Red Devils had a light week with a 3-2 win over Pingry in their lone game on Wednesday. Senior forward Maddie Freeman scored a pair of goals and senior forward Amanda Whitlock also scored. A scheduled game against North Hunterdon on Saturday was postponed.

Up next: at Lawrenceville on Monday; at Montgomery on Thursday; at Ridge on Saturday.

4. Hackettstown (4-0) -- Tigers still have not allowed a goal this season after win over Jefferson (8-0 on Wednesday) and Wallkill Valley (4-0 on Friday), outscoring their opponents by a combined 24-0. Junior forward Molly Gorczyca scored six goals against Jefferson to raise her team-leading total to 11. Senior forward Kayli Yeisley notched a pair of goals in the win over No. 10 Wallkill Valley. Showdown at No. 5 Newton on Oct. 5 will be the first test for this team.

Up next: at Lenape Valley on Monday; North Warren at home on Thursday.

5. Newton (4-0) -- Braves, who also did not allow a goal in their four wins, squeaked by No. 7 Belvidere with a 1-0 win last Monday and capped a short week with a 3-0 victory over High Point on Saturday. Junior midfielder Natalie Rivas scored the winner against Belvidere and added two more against High Point. Best wishes go out for a speedy recovery to the Newton players involved in a car accident last week.

Up next: Kittatinny at home on Monday; at Lenape Valley on Thursday.

6. Phillipsburg (3-1) -- Stateliners opened last week with a 6-2 win over Watchung Hills before dropping a 4-1 decision to Hillsborough on Friday and capped a Skyland Conference trifecta with a 3-1 win over Ridge. Sophomore forward Abby Evans had the hat trick against Watchung Hills, while freshman Gabby Dudek added three assists. Senior forward Ellie Zgoda had a three-goal week for the 'Liners.

Up next: Warren Hills at home on Monday; Bridgewater-Raritan at home on Thursday; at North Hunterdon on Saturday.

7. Belvidere (3-2) -- After a 1-0 loss to No. 5 Newton last Monday to open the week, County Seaters blanked No. 8 South Hunterdon, 2-0, on Wednesday and scored a 3-0 victory over Franklin on Saturday in a pair of Skyland Conference Mountain Division clashes. Junior back Erin Bronico and junior forward Kara Tipton scored the goals against South, while senior forward Katie Spadaccini found the cage twice against Franklin.

Up next: at Mount St. Mary on Monday; Bernards at home on Thursday; at North Plainfield on Saturday.

8. South Hunterdon (1-4) -- Eagles have dropped four in a row since a season-opening win over Mount St. Mary -- dropping decisions to No. 1 Voorhees (4-0 on Monday) and No. 7 Belvidere (2-0 on Wednesday) before a tough 3-2 loss to Somerville on Friday. Senior forward Ashley Eick and sophomore forward Julia Kreider scored the goals in that loss. Look for South to get back on track this week against three Skyland Conference foes.

Up next: at North Plainfield on Monday; Franklin at home on Thursday; at Mount St. Mary on Saturday.

9. Sparta (3-1-1) -- Spartans went 2-0 last week with a 4-2 win over High Point on Tuesday and a 1-0 victory over Randolph on Saturday. Senior midfielder Gretchen Bowie and junior midfielder Isabella Candeloro each scored a pair of goals against High Point, while senior forward Rhett Curran had the game-winner against Randolph.

Up next: at Mendham on Tuesday; at Roxbury on Thursday; Vernon at home on Friday.

10. Wallkill Valley (3-3-1) -- Rangers are coming off an up-and-down week with a 2-0 win over Kittatinny on Wednesday sandwiched by losses to Mount Olive (3-2 on Tuesday) and Hackettstown (4-0 on Friday). Against Kittatinny, sophomore forward Fiona Blake and Francesca Caisullo scored goals. Sophomore forwards Morgan Carr and Caitlyn Mizeski found the cage.

Up next: North Warren at home on Monday; at Jefferson on Thursday.

On the bubble: Lenape Valley (3-2); Kittatinny (3-1).
