"Right now, we are No. 1."
And who could argue after a dominating performance by North that culminated with an impressive 40-21 victory over Kingsway in the much anticipated championship match of the 15th annual Henry Boresch Duals on Saturday afternoon at Newton High School.
North celebrates its first Boresch Duals championship. |
"Rankings don't mean much in January, but we did well," said Hrunka, whose powerful contingent of upper weights paved the way for the program's first title in its fourth Boresch Duals appearance. "I still don't think we're wrestling our best, but it's always good to win. We like to beat good teams."
No. 4 Kingsway (4-1), last season's Group 4 champion which scored a 39-26 win over Toms River North in the semis, got off to a good start and a 9-0 lead before getting steamrolled as North reeled off eight straight wins, including Fossett's stunning 12-second pin of Kevin Pandorf, a returning region qualifier, in what was expected to be a good bout at 182 pounds. Fossett (10-2), a Region 5 champion who had two pins and a major on the day, got a takedown and slapped on a cradle to give the Lions a 16-9 lead through six bouts.
"It was right there," Fossett said of the fall. "He reached up really high, and actually hit me in the face, and I hit the low single, and was able to get the cradle."
North senior Evan Klimas, normally a 145-pounder, started the run with a hard-fought 6-3 decision over David DiPietro at 152. As was the case against Paulsboro, Hrunka keenly bumped his lineup, which resulted in four pins and a major. Following Fossett's lead with pins were junior James Holder (170), freshman Alex Uryniak (195), senior Ian Gaburo (220) and junior Liam Akers (285), who gave the Lions a commanding 34-9 lead.
"[Klimas] sent us off like a rocket," Fossett said. "He did the same thing against Paulsboro. He's a great team leader and gave us momentum."
Freshman Logan Wadle, who came up with a crucial major decision against Paulsboro, sealed the victory over Kingsway with a 7-3 win at 106.
Bonus points were the order of the day for North, which racked up four pins and a major against Kingsway, to go with four pins, a technical fall and a major decision against Paulsboro, which suffered its second loss -- 44-21 to No. 19 Toms River North -- in the third-place match.
"We've been preaching pins all season," Hrunka said. "Mat wrestling has been a focus of our offseason."
A key move early was bumping senior Drew Doscher away from Paulsboro state runner-up Jacob Perez-Eli at 138, as he was the only wrestler weighed in there for the Red Raiders. Doscher came up big when he decked John Morrison in 40 seconds at 145, while Klimas' techincal fall at 152 and Holder's pin at 170 stretched the lead to 23-11.
After giving returning state champion Brandon Green a forfeit win at 182, Hrunka bumped Fossett to 195, where he stuck Jamel Miles-Benjamin. Instead of keeping Fossett down at 182 to possible save team points, Uryniak was taken out of the lineup, and Gaburo scored a 6-1 win at 220, while Akers lost a 6-5 decision in the second tiebreaker at 285.
"We didn't really love that matchup at 182 and we didn't want Uryniak going up to 220," Hrunka explained. "We liked the matchup at 285 with Akers a little better."
Wadle (11-2), who is off to a great start in his rookie campaign, gave North some much needed breathing room with a 14-6 major of Dante Onorato. Wadle was down, 4-1, after one period as he surrendered two takedowns before getting reversal and three backs in the second. A dump for five points with 12 seconds left in the third earned the major.
With really no weak spots in the lineup and a talented group of upper weights, North will be a tough out as it preps for the first of two potential meetings with Phillipsburg and a possible rematch with Kingsway in the Group 4 championships next month.
"We have big guys who can wrestle," Hrunka said. "They're pretty good. In years past, we scrounged to find kids to fill the uppers. But we have a lot of stuff in front of us. We have to stay healthy. It's a long road ahead."
Braves continue to grow
Newton knew what it was up against in its own gym, but the Braves battled in their three losses, including a 50-24 setback against Hanover Park in the seventh-place match.
"I thought we competed and had some good efforts," said veteran coach Eric Bollette, whose lineup was bolstered by the return of senior 160-pounder Trevor Aughenbaugh, who went 2-1 overall. "We're still green, but we're getting better. It's a tough field."
Junior Nathan Fitt continued to impress -- scoring a 5-3 win over state qualifier Jacob Delvecchio at 120 pounds in Newton's 40-27 loss to South Plainfield, last season's Group 2 champion. Fitt (9-1), a region qualifier as a sophomore, put Delvecchio on his back for four points in the second period to break it open.
Senior Julian Sibblies (7-3), who is in the midst of a breakout season at 182 pounds, had two pins after dropping a 7-2 decision to Pandorf in the Braves' 57-9 loss to Kingsway in the opening round.
