Wrestling: HWS earns 7 top seeds (section pairings)

Let's get to the point. It wouldn't be a high school wrestling season in New Jersey without a controversy surrounding the release of final power point totals. Right on cue, a second set filled with corrections was released about 3 1/2 hours after the initial version hit inboxes around the state on Monday afternoon.

Delaware Valley coach Andy Fitz immediately noticed irregularities with the initial totals, noting that they seemed much lower than in previous years. The mathematics teacher and Lehigh University grad was again spot on, as several teams, including his Terriers, jumped up as much as three full points while many saw at least a .01 increase. A few Skyland Conference teams also had a rise in numbers.

Kittatinny eyes its 23rd sectional title.
In all, 12 Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex area teams qualified for the upcoming sectional tournaments, which get underway with two rounds on Monday. The public school higher seeds will host -- 1 vs. 8 and 5 vs. 4 with the winners squaring off in the semifinals, same with 3 vs. 6 and 7 vs. 2. The championship finals are set for Wednesday, Feb. 9.

The Non-Public schedule has quarterfinals set for Monday, followed by semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 9 and finals on Friday, Feb. 11. Also under the new format, public sectional champs move on to the Group semifinals (seeded by power points) on Friday, Feb. 11.

The public and Non-Public winners move on to the Group finals at Franklin High School on Sunday, Feb. 13. Group 1 and Non-Public B will be at 9 a.m.; Group 5, 3 and Non-Public A at 11:30 a.m., followed by Group 4 and 2 at 2 p,m.

Phillipsburg (North 2, Group 5), North Hunterdon (North 2, Group 4), Warren Hills (North 2, Group 3), High Point (North 1, Group 2), Delaware Valley (Central Jersey, Group 1), Kittatinny (North 1, Group 1) and Pope John (Non-Public North B) all earned No. 1 seeds.

Hunterdon Central (Central Jersey, Group 5) is a No. 3 seed, while Newton (North 1, Group 2) is a No. 5 seed. Voorhees and Hackettstown are the Nos. 6 and 7 seeds in North 2, Group 2. Lenape Valley is the No. 8 seed in North 1, Group 1.

The seeding committee met on Tuesday to finalize the pairings in each section and break any existing ties based on head-to-head, where applicable, followed in order by average of all duals, common opponents and winning percentage. Pairings become official as of noon on Thursday.

Phillipsburg (9-1), ranked No. 13 in the New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20, breathed a collective sigh of relief on Sunday when it was announced that the NJSIAA had waived the 10-match (in-state) requirement to qualify.

The Stateliners, who have won an HWS-best 38 sectional titles, annually wrestle Easton (Pa.) and will surely reevaluate how they cobble together any future schedules. In fairness, head coach Brad Gentzle had little input on the 2021-22 slate since it was mostly set during the coaching transition last spring. P'burg has long maintained stances to not wrestle dual meets involving Non-Public schools and only single duals (no tri-meets or quads). But one or both may have to change starting in 2022-23.

One possible scenario is to join dual meet events such as the Henry Boresch Duals or Patriot Duals at North Warren, provided either has openings for 2023. However, one potential drawback there is that North Hunterdon and High Point also compete in those tournaments and locals are trying to schedule competitions against teams they don't already see more than once a season.

The Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament, which was a week earlier than usual this season, is likely to go back to its normal slot on Jan. 15, 2023, and the 'Liners regularly attend the King of the Mountain Tournament and Bethlehem Holiday Classic, where they track heavily against New Jersey's 30-match limit. P'burg also has previously attended the Virginia Duals, but that long running event is set for Jan. 13-15, 2023, which would conflict with HWS so that's likely not an option. There is certainly no guarantee of facing New Jersey schools in that tournament.

Warren Hills (12-3), ranked by Open Mike as the No. 1 team in HWS and No. 11 in the state by the NJWWA, is gearing up for a run at capturing the program's sixth sectional title and first since 2007. Coach Dave Sbriscia's Blue Streaks are 9-1 since a 33-22 loss to North Hunterdon on Jan. 7. Delsea (South Jersey) and South Plainfield (Central Jersey) are also Group 3 title contenders and odds-on favorites in those sections.

High Point won the program's 6th state title in 2020.
High Point (8-4), which won the Group 2 title in 2020, is an overwhelming favorite to claim its Sussex County-best 29th sectional title. Coach John Gardner's Wildcats were slowed earlier this season due to COVID-19 and injuries, but the lineup seems to be rounding into shape at the right time, though junior Roman Citro (10-4 at 120-126) has been sidelined with a knee injury sustained at the Patriot Duals on Jan. 22. Senior ace Brian Soldano (21-0 at 190), a Rutgers commit who is 110-5 overall, has 85 career pins (19 this season, plus one technical fall and a forfeit victory) and is riding a 58-match win streak dating to 2020.

North Hunterdon (12-4), which won the Group 4 title to cap the program's first unbeaten season in 2020, is seeking its 16th sectional championship. Coach Chris Hrunka's Lions aren't the state favorites this time around as Mount Olive (11-2), the top seed in North 1, Group 4, bids for the Morris County program's third sectional and first state championship. North handed Mount Olive a 40-19 loss in the 2020 Group 4 semifinals.

Group 5 is surely the toughest field to navigate, but Group 1 is interesting from a local standpoint as Kittatinny and Delaware Valley have designs on a state title. The Cougars prevailed, 30-29, when the teams met in Hampton Township on Jan. 15. Coach John Gill has led Kittatinny to 22 sectional and eight state titles, seven in Group 2 and the last in Group 1 in 2008, while Fitz guided the Terriers, who have won 19 sectional championships, to their eighth and last state title in Group 2 in 2017.

Should they both win sectional titles as expected, Kittatinny would be the top seed over Del Val (No. 2 seed) -- based on head-to-head -- for the Group 1 semifinal round. Kittatinny owns an 11-6 edge in the all-time series, including four wins in the Group 2 final (2001, '02, '05 and '06).

Wrestling: Waiver flavor of week; HWS notes, ranks

Don't sweat it. The NJSIAA on Sunday provided a significant measure of relief to teams in jeopardy of missing the upcoming sectional tournaments by eliminating the requisite 10 in-state matches to qualify.

P'burg starts the quest for its 38th sectional title on Feb. 7.
That was great news for Phillipsburg (9-1), which was at nine as of Sunday's cutoff. The Stateliners' 51-9 victory over Easton (Pa.) did not factor in their total and coaches were scrambling late this week due to the potential for Saturday's match at Southern to be wiped out by snow, which turned out to be the case.

The NJSIAA's official statement sent via email on Sunday afternoon read as follows:

"As a result of numerous COVID-related disruptions this season, NJSIAA will waive the minimum 10-match requirement against NJSIAA member schools for the 2021-2022 Boys Team Wrestling Tournament. Teams will be seeded based on the number of matches against NJSIAA member schools as of the cutoff date -- the power point rankings will be based on the average of these matches but will not exceed 10.  For those schools with more than 10 matches, the 10 best match results will be used.  As a reminder, the cutoff date has been extended to Sunday, January 30, 2022."

Kingsway (8-1), also a contender for the Group 5 title, was in the same boat as P'burg, ranked No. 13 in the New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20. It's probably not a stretch to think Howell and Southern would not have shed a tear had the Dragons and 'Liners missed the postseason party.

High Point won the Group 2 title in 2020.
The NJSIAA did the right thing by waiving the 10-match requirement, as Open Mike reported it would do weeks ago, given the unusual circumstances teams have faced this season, but the regulations released prior to the season were crystal clear in that there would be no exceptions or waivers. Perhaps it would have been better served to quantify that in the era of COVID, but we're here now. The state also previously moved the cutoff date back one day and allowed teams five weigh-ins per week this season. Most found a way to reach 10 matches.

It's fair to point out that High Point received no quarter in 2009, when the Wildcats, then ranked as the No. 1 team in New Jersey, were ruled ineligible under the former 70 (now 60) percent rule as they faced several out-of-state opponents at the Clash in Minnesota that season. It's also fair to argue that this latest issue was caused by a pandemic.

In any case, we learn and move forward to the final week of the regular season. The unofficial set of final power points (with a 24-hour window for disputes and corrections) will be released early this week.

Match of the week

Delaware Valley at Warren Hills (7 p.m. on Tuesday) -- This one, originally slated for Saturday, will decide this season's Skyland Conference Valley Division champion. Terriers are set for a difficult week with matches against Hunterdon Central (Monday) and Phillipsburg (Friday) also on the slate. Coach Andy Fitz's team will be better for it as the Hunterdon County school eyes a Group 1 title run. Blue Streaks, who are among the Group 3 title contenders, rate as heavy favorites, featuring one of the most balanced lineups -- including a decided edge in the upper weights where Del Val usually needs to come through -- among all public schools statewide. Coach Dave Sbriscia's team seeks the program's fourth straight division title and third outright. Del Val owns a 31-21 edge overall dating to 1963, but Warren Hills won the previous two meetings (49-16 at home in 2020 and 47-16 on the road in 2021).

Area rankings

Hills has gone 9-1 since a 33-22 loss to NH on Jan. 7.
1. Warren Hills (12-3) -- Streaks went 3-0 last week with wins over Hopatcong (84-0) and Voorhees (66-9) on Wednesday, followed by a 79-0 romp over Hackettstown on Friday. It's the most points scored and first shutout in the series, which Hills leads, 55-10, dating to 1957. Junior Ryan Lundy (8-13) sealed the shutout with a pin at 138 pounds as the hosts did not yield an offensive point, racking up eight pins and two technical falls along with three forfeits. In the featured bout, senior Kevin Riedinger (18-4) scored a 7-1 decision over Aiden Scheeringa at 113.

Up next: Delaware Valley at home on Tuesday; Livingston at home on Wednesday.

2. Phillipsburg (9-1) -- Stateliners cruised to wins over Easton (51-9 on Tuesday) and Montgomery (76-0 on Wednesday), as the latter secured at least a share of the Skyland Conference Raritan Division title. Coach Brad Gentzle's team can win it outright with a victory at Hillsborough on Wednesday. The 'Liners have won three straight vs. Easton for the first time since a nine-match win streak from 1963-71. P'burg has won four of the last five, and its 51 points in the latest matchup is a series high, while the 42-point spread is the most since a 34-8 win in 1970. Senior James Day (22-2 at 126), who earned the Brad Weaver Award as the OW vs. Easton, entered this week with 97 career victories.

Up next: at Bound Brook on Monday; at Hillsborough on Wednesday; at Delaware Valley on Friday.

3. North Hunterdon (12-4) -- Lions rolled to a 40-20 win over Delaware Valley on Tuesday in their only action last week. Coach Chris Hrunka's team, which should be the No. 1 seed in North 2, Group 4, won nine bouts (four pins), including junior Jack Van Doren's fall in 3:09 at 126. Van Doren, whose father, Mike, was a 1988 state champ and 100-match winner for North, took home the Dan Hutchins Memorial Award as his team's Outstanding Wrestler, while senior Liam Akers (24-1 at 285) logged his 78th career win. Akers and juniors Alex Uryniak (23-3 at 190) and Brendan Raley (24-2 at 215) are a combined 71-6 for North, which is sitting on 793 wins overall.

Up next: at Ridge on Wednesday.

4. Hunterdon Central (10-3) -- Red Devils romped to a 54-3 win over Bridgewater-Raritan to seize control of the Skyland Conference Delaware Division title race with two matches remaining against Franklin and Watchung Hills. Central's crossover match against North Hunterdon, which was set for this past Friday, was canceled with no makeup date. Senior Tanner Peake (22-3 at 150-157), who is 105-25 overall, moved into a tie with Matt Thompson (105-18 from 1989-93) for 18th place on the program's all-time wins list. Thompson's son, Evan, a sophomore, is 16-4 at 132 pounds.

Up next: at Delaware Valley on Monday; at Franklin on Wednesday.

5. High Point (8-4) -- 'Cats went 3-0 last week with wins over Emerson-Park Ridge (73-0 on Tuesday), Morris Hills (40-25 on Wednesday) and River Dell (62-5 on Thursday). Oddly, Emerson-Park Ridge opted to rest its starters in preparation for a league title match against Garfield the next night. Two-time state champion Brian Soldano (21-0 at 190), with 19 pins, one technical fall and one forfeit, has 85 career pins and entered this week riding a 58-match win streak dating to 2020. Coach John Gardner's team, the preseason Group 2 title favorite, can secure the NJAC Freedom Division title with wins over Jefferson and Newton.

Up next: Jefferson at home on Tuesday; at Newton on Friday.

6. Kittatinny (13-2) -- Cougars had a couple of close calls last week in wins over Newton (39-36 on Tuesday) and River Dell (36-34 on Wednesday). Sophomore Tucker Lockburner (9-7 at 175) came through with a huge pin vs. Newton in what was considered a tossup bout and senior Ty Eldred (20-3 at 215-285) sealed it with a pin at heavyweight. Coach John Gill's team should be the No. 1 seed in North 1, Group 1 as it seeks the program's 23rd sectional title.

Up next: at Pascack Hills on Wednesday; Jefferson at home on Friday.

7. Delaware Valley (12-3) -- Terriers bounced back from a 40-20 loss at North Hunterdon on Tuesday with a 46-9 victory over Somerville on Wednesday. Senior Jaden Corbin (1-7) got his first varsity win with a pin in the final about at 157 against North and earned the Dan Hutchins Memorial Award as the OW for his team. Senior Sam Thomas (6-3 at 157-165), who logged wins in both matches, has also impressed head coach Andy Fitz, whose squad will be the top seed in Central Jersey, Group 1.

Up next: Hunterdon Central at home on Monday; at Warren Hills on Tuesday; Phillipsburg at home on Friday.

8. Pope John (7-3) -- Lions, who are getting healthy and looking like the title favorite in Non-Public B, scored wins over West Morris (40-30 on Tuesday) and Parsippany (72-0 on Wednesday) this past week. Senior state placewinner Jack Stoll (9-2 at 215), whose father, Joe, was a region champion for Vernon at heavyweight in 1984 and older brother, Kyle, was a two-time state medalist for High Point, logged two pins for coach Mark Piotrowsky's team, which will be the top seed in North B.

Up next: Don Bosco Prep at home on Thursday.

9. Newton (7-6) -- Braves rebounded from a tough 39-36 loss to crosstown rival Kittatinny with a 62-15 win over Hackettstown on Wednesday. Juniors Michael Melillo (13-3 at 138) and Thaylor Sibblies (13-3 at 144) logged victories in both matches. Coach Eric Bollette's team seems to be doing some of its best wrestling of the season and would surely love another crack at Jefferson, which scored a 36-34 win in their matchup on Jan. 19, in the North 1, Group 2 tournament.

Up next: Roxbury at home on Tuesday; High Point at home on Friday.

10. Voorhees (10-5) -- Vikings, who have quietly put together a nice season after struggling to fill all 14 weights in recent campaigns, split their tri-meet involving Hopatcong (66-10 win) and Warren Hills (66-9 loss) on Wednesday. Seniors Hunter Cryan (11-7) and Mike Mosier (14-6) are closing in on 50 career wins with 47 and 49, respectively. Coach Ricky Kurtz's team looks more and more like a darkhorse in what looks like a wide open North 2, Group 2 section.

Up next: at Hillsborough on Monday; at Watchung Hills on Wednesday; at Montgomery on Friday; Millburn at Metuchen on Saturday.

Field hockey: Roncoroni takes on 'dream' job at WC

Kathryn Roncoroni has the rare opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds. The former Voorhees High School served as the head coach at her alma mater for one season in 2021, and now has returned to her collegiate home at West Chester University.

Roncoroni led Voorhees to a division title in 2021.
Roncoroni recently joined the Golden Rams' staff as a full-time assistant, where she will serve alongside her college head coach Amy Cohen. Roncoroni, who is Voorhees' all-time leading scorer, helped West Chester win a Division II national championship her senior year in 2019. She ranked fourth in the nation with 19 goals and 49 points as well as fifth with 11 assists.

"I'm very excited," said Roncoroni, who met the players on Wednesday and moved into her new apartment on Friday. "My dream starting in college, and at the end of high school, was to be a college coach. I love it here."

Roncoroni transferred to West Chester from American University for her senior season. She was part of a formidable forward line that helped the Golden Rams set a school record for goals scored in a single season. Roncoroni graduated Summa Cum Laude from West Chester in May 2020 with her bachelor of science in Professional Studies and minors in Elementary Education and Art Studio.

"Welcome home to Kat," Cohen said in release on the school's field hockey page. "It's always exciting to welcome back one of our own and in particular a high-caliber person and player. Days like this are truly great days to be a Golden Ram."

Following her graduation from West Chester, Roncoroni attended Swansea University in the United Kingdom, where she pursued her master's in Childhood Studies while also serving as a member of both the Swansea Hockey Club Premiere Team and Swansea University field hockey team. Additionally, Roncoroni became certified as a level one UK Coach and helped coach teams ranging from U13 through collegiate level field hockey for Swansea Club and University.

"We knew that was on the table [when we hired her]," Voorhees athletic director Brian Baumann said of Roncoroni's move to West Chester. "It was good experience for her if it ever got to that point."

Roncoroni, who was named the ninth head coach at Voorhees last spring, guided the Vikings (8-12) to a Skyland Conference Valley Division title. But the Vikes, who finished under .500 for the first time since going 6-9-1 in 2004, dropped seven of their last eight games, including a season-ending 2-0 loss to Madison in the opening round of the North 2, Group 2 sectional playoffs.

The program, which is sitting on 690 victories, also lost to Group 3 champion North Hunterdon for the second straight season -- the first time in series history since North won five-in-a-row in 1985-86. Voorhees still owns a 55-15-7 edge all-time dating to 1975.

"It was a little disappointing. I didn't want to leave on that note," Roncoroni said when asked how tough it was to leave the Vikes after just one season. "It was exciting, but also upsetting. It was a win, lose, win. It was a big learning experience."

Roncoroni holds 4 Voorhees scoring marks.

Despite a losing record and pending graduation losses of several senior starters, including standout midfielder and leading scorer Sadie Eichlin (13 goals), who is headed to Montclair State, Roncoroni feels the program is in good shape moving forward.

"I believe it is," Roncoroni said. "I think we had some great freshmen this year. We had a lot of injuries and concussions so I think they can do amazing [next year]."

Baumann is now tasked with finding the program's third head coach since Taylor Webb stepped down following the 2017 season. Shannon Hughes, a former star at South Plainfield, led the program to a 47-13-1 mark, two Skyland Conference division titles (2018 and '20) and the Central West A regional championship in 2020 over the past three seasons.

"I'm just starting to talk to people," Baumann, who cited a lack of internal candidates and was unsure of any teaching positions that may become available, said during a recent interview.

In her final high school game, Roncoroni scored both of Voorhees' goals in a 3-2 loss to Madison in the 2015 North 2, Group 2 sectional final. She finished that season with a school record 51 goals to go with 14 assists.

Roncoroni claimed all but one offensive record in Voorhees' fine field hockey history -- owning single-season records for goals (51) and points (116), along with career marks for goals (140) and points (319). Webb still owns the Vikes' record for career assists (58 from 1999-02).

Wrestling: 'Liners peaking?; Power points, notes

What a difference a week -- or nearly two -- can make for a wrestling team which at one point saw its season seemingly on the brink.

Phillipsburg, coming off one of its worst losses in over a quarter century, has righted the ship in a big way, as evidenced by a complete dismantling of archrival Easton on Tuesday night, when the Stateliners won 12 of 14 bouts in a 51-9 win -- their largest margin of victory in a series that began in 1948.

James Day (22-2 at 126 pounds), who is three wins shy of 100, was among six senior winners against the Red Rovers.

High Point and North Hunterdon won state titles in 2020.
"This group of seniors are 3-0, with a season off, and scored 40, 42 and 51 points against Easton," first-year head coach Brad Gentzle told Mike Moore of Stateliner Sports during the postmatch interview. "It's a credit to this group of seniors who have really been through it all going back to freshman year. Going through junior year, COVID year, and everything we dealt with in the offseason, all the adversity we faced. They just continue to work and it's all about them."

P'burg (9-1), which won just three bouts in a 35-15 loss to Warren Hills on Jan. 14, has reeled off five straight wins since, including an impressive 44-14 victory over North Hunterdon on Jan. 19. That run also includes wins over Livingston (37-22), Kittatinny (57-6) and Belvidere (76-3).

But the lopsided win over Easton is the biggest story for a rabid and loyal fan base which has had to endure many nights on the other end in this rivalry. The Red Rovers, now at their lowest point in the series since the early 1960s, hold a 62-20 edge overall, but have dropped three straight for the first time since a nine-match skid from 1963-71. The 'Liners have won four of the last five and six of eight, and their 51 points in the latest matchup is a series high, while the 42-point spread is the most since a 34-8 win in 1970. Keep in mind that there were only 12 weight classes from 1959-86.

P'burg outscored Easton, 133-53 in the last 3 meetings.
With sectionals rapidly approaching, Phillipsburg, ranked No. 13 in the latest New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20, seems to be peaking at the right time. Credit Gentzle and his staff as that loss to Warren Hills, which did not sit well with the program and the community, could have quickly swung the season in an entirely different direction.

"We've got more ahead for sure," Gentzle said. "This is goal No. 1. We want to beat Easton and we want to be Group [5] state champions. That's where we turn our attention now, preparing for a really tough Southern team this weekend, who we very well could see again. Couple matches next week with Del Val and Hillsborough and Bound Brook to kind of get us ready for sectional week the following week."

P'burg is currently the No. 1 seed in North 2, Group 5, though it could be in jeopardy of not reaching the 10-match minimum (the NJSIAA on Friday extended the cutoff to Sunday). Wednesday's 76-0 win over Montgomery was nine (Easton is out of state and doesn't count) and Southern on Saturday is 10, but the forecast is showing the potential for heavy snow in the south. Belvidere was a late addition to the schedule a week ago.

The sectional tournaments begin with two rounds on Monday, Feb. 7. On opening night, 1 wrestles 8 and 5 faces 4 (3 vs. 6 and 7 vs. 2 at the other site) with the winners meeting in the semifinals under the new format. The sectional finals will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 9, and the Group semis on Friday, Feb. 11. The Group championships in the five public and Non-Public A and B brackets are set for Sunday, Feb. 13 at Franklin High School.

"It will be a different setup this year than all of us are used to in the past," Gentzle said. "But everything's been different so I'm all for it. Let's see how it goes."

Group 5 is by far the most difficult on the public side. Livingston is expected to come out of North 1, while Howell and Hunterdon Central are the favorites in Central Jersey. Southern, which owns an 8-6 lead in the all-time series (including five postseason meetings) with P'burg, and Kingsway are on a collision course for the title match in South Jersey.

Lion pride

North celebrates its sectional title in 2020.
North Hunterdon (12-4) started its week off in fine fashion with a 40-20 waxing of Delaware Valley on Tuesday. The Lions, who were coming off a third-place showing at the North Warren Patriot Duals, are seeking the program's 16th sectional title after winning the North 2, Group 4 and Group 4 championships in 2020.

Junior Jack Van Doren (11-11 at 120-126) was the North Hunterdon recipient of the Dan Hutchins Outstanding Wrestler Award. Hutchins, a former state placewinner for Del Val was tragically killed in an automobile accident on Father's Day in 2002. The Del Val gym was named in his honor in 2013. It was great to see his father, Don, and brother, Phil, a Terriers assistant coach, present the awards. Don Hutchins still does a tremendous amount of charity work in Dan's memory.

Coach Chris Hrunka's team is certainly battle tested having competed at the Sam Cali Tournament in December, along with the Boresch Duals and Patriot Duals, which have become two of the toughest events on the New Jersey schedule. That showed against Del Val (11-3), which is eyeing a run at the Group 1 title.

North, which is sitting on 793 wins as a program, will be the top seed and overwhelming favorite in North 2, Group 4, while Mount Olive (North 1), Middletown South (Central) and Brick Memorial (Central) are the other state title contenders.

Sussex scene

Kittatinny needed a get-right match and coach John Gill's team got one with a thrilling 39-36 win over Newton for its third straight victory in that crosstown rivalry on Tuesday at Henry Boresch Memorial Gym. The Cougars (12-2), who saw their 11-match win streak to open the season snapped in a 43-21 loss to nemesis High Point on Jan. 19, were overwhelmed two nights later at home in a 57-6 defeat against Phillipsburg --its worst loss in the 27-year history of that series since a 59-6 setback in 2015.

Against Newton, sophomore Bryce Coesfeld delivered a key 3-1 decision over Takeo Sibblies at 150, while sophomore Tucker Lockburner essentially dashed the Braves' upset hopes with a pin at 175.

Kittatinny is now 34-17 all-time vs. Newton.
"They match up really well with us. Where they're strong we're not so strong. It was a wonderful match, a great high school match to watch," said Gill, now 34-12 all-time against Newton. "I'm certainly happy after the pounding we took last week, we needed something like this."

Newton (6-6), which has improved tremendously since the start of the season, a credit to head coach Eric Bollette and outstanding assistants Andy Iliff and Teddy Sibblies, won seven bouts (including five pins) and had Kittatinny on the ropes. Bollette is now 6-18 against his alma mater and former coach as his 2009 and '10 North 1, Group 1 sectional title teams won four in a row, snapping the program's 22-match skid from 1990-2008. The Braves could be a tough out in North 1, Group 2, with High Point sitting as the sectional favorite.

Kittatinny, which scored a 30-29 win over Delaware Valley on Jan. 15, knows it will have to tighten things up in the quest to secure the program's 23rd sectional title and fourth since 2016.

"We've just got to toughen up in a couple spots. Not all of our holes should be pins," said Gill, whose team will be the top seed in North 1, Group 1. "[Opponents] shouldn't be getting all these sixes. We have to work on that. We don't have a lot of time."

Here are the final set of power points before Saturday's cutoff (records are through Jan. 22):
