Vernon's balancing act trips up Pope John
SPARTA -- Kayla Turner-Boss says she lost quite a bit with the graduation of star forward Lauren Poppe, who led Vernon with 23 goals a year ago.
This season, Turner-Boss is trying to lead the Vikings' attack in the same fashion. With five goals in two games, she's off to a pretty start. The senior forward added to her total with a pair of goals in Vernon's 4-0 win over Pope John on Tuesday in a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference American Division field hockey clash.
"[Lauren] is like my sister, it was like losing my little partner," said Turner-Boss, who had a hat trick in Vernon's 4-2 season-opening win over Montville. "Each goal [is scored] with the whole team, not just one person. Everyone has worked well together."
Vernon (2-0, 2-0 NJAC), ranked seventh in the Open Mike area Top 10, is looking to get back to the sectional playoffs and make a title run in the North 1, Group 3 bracket. Last year, coach Hollyce Schoepp's team reached the North 1, Group 4 final where it lost to Montclair, 5-0. The Vikings, who won their first state game since 1995 a season ago, reached the title game despite an 8-1 semifinal loss to Phillipsburg, which was disqualified for playing too many games.
Now, Vernon is out to prove it belongs with the top teams in and out of Sussex County.
Offensively, Turner-Boss, senior forward Melody Prisco and senior midfielder Steph Peterson have led the charge early on. Prisco scored the opening and ultimately the winning goal against Pope John off a feed from junior forward Rachel Colvin with 14:32 left in the first half.
Prisco's speed was a huge factor in the game and was on full display on Vernon's second goal before the half. The speedy right wing got loose on a breakaway down the right sideline, and upon entering the circle, made a beautiful cross pass to the left side. Waiting for the ball was Turner-Boss, who deposited it in the cage for a 2-0 lead with 11:10 on the clock.
Peterson all but iced it with her first goal of the season -- a beautiful reverse stick that split the legs of Pope John goalie Jenna Gloria -- off a penalty corner with 11:08 remaining in the second half. Turner-Boss capped the scoring with 6:48 left to play.
"We have a bunch of girls that can score," Peterson said. "We practice a lot of corners. That was the first time I got [the reverse stick shot] in."
Goalie Rhonda Richardsen, in her first year as the full-time starter after splitting time as a junior in 2010, was outstanding in the victory. Richardsen stopped 12 shots, including several diving attempts in front of the cage and held off a Pope John charge right before halftime.
"I've only been playing for four years," she said. "I'm liking [being the starter] a lot. I just try to get the ball out [of harm's way]. This is my place [in front of the cage]."
No. 10 Pope John (1-1, 1-1), which won its opener, 5-1 over Mount Olive, had numerous chances in the first half but couldn't cash in. The Lions outshot the Vikings, 12-8 for the game and had a 6-2 edge on corners.
"We came out a little rusty in the beginning, but I felt like we really came back in the second half and showed Pope John what we have," Peterson said.

North Warren ends drought; Voorhees set to open
North Warren's field hockey team ended its 23-game losing skid with a 5-0 victory over Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg (Pa.) on Monday. The Patriots hadn't won since a 2-1 victory in overtime against North Plainfield on Oct. 22, 2009.
It's the first win for second-year coach Laura Kasa, whose team finished 0-19 in 2010. North Warren scored a total of two goals all last season, as it more than doubled that total on Monday.
Laura Gessler, Kali Thies, Giuliana Lorusso, Jenna Norgard and Colleen McGrath scored the Patriots' goals. Gessler had one of team's two goals a year ago. Thies, Norgard, Jess Stefani and Rebecca Hendershot had assists. Goalie Madison Moore recorded the shutout.
Voorhees ready for early test
The Vikings and new coach Taylor Webb will open the 2011 season at home against Skyland Conference Raritan Division rival Phillipsburg on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.
Voorhees, which was rained out on Thursday at Delaware Valley, has been tough on the Stateliners in recent years. The Vikes lead the series 13-4, including two wins in 2010, and have won nine straight against their Warren County counterparts. Phillipsburg's last win in the series was 2-1 at Voorhees on Oct. 23, 2006.
Phillipsburg is off to a 2-0 start under first-year coach Jennifer Paulus. The 'Liners defeated Blair Academy, 7-3 on Friday, and Ridge, 2-1, on Saturday. Lauren Nunes, Priscilla Howell and Cassie Fortuna lead the team with two goals apiece.
Warren Hills-Voorhees to renew rivalry
Voorhees is bracing for a difficult stretch with a huge game against heated-rival Warren Hills on Thursday in Lebanon Township.
The Blue Streaks host state power Bridgewater on Tuesday before taking on the Vikes, who are 13-4-3 against Warren Hills since 2003. Warren Hills beat Hackettstown, 8-0, in its opener on Saturday. The Streaks' last win over Voorhees was 3-2 in overtime on Oct. 10, 2009. The teams also tied, 1-1, that season.
Voorhees swept both regular season meetings last year for the first time since 2006 and won a third meeting, 1-0 in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex final. The Vikings lead 27-14-6 in the overall series dating to 1975.

Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Field Hockey Top 10
The northwest Jersey area is always strong and this year is no exception.
High Point, Voorhees and Warren Hills should all contend for postseason titles, while Phillipsburg is another team to keep a close eye on.
Here we go with the first of our weekly Top 10 polls. The top five teams were an easy call, not necessarily the order. Teams at 6-10, could change week-to-week, as there is some uncertainty with the bottom five before any games have been played.
1. Warren Hills -- Blue Streaks have reloaded once again and will look for their first sectional title since 2009 and their fifth under coach Laurie Kerr. It won't be easy as defending North 2, Group 3 champion Freehold Boro is in the same section and returns a wealth of talent from last year's Group 3 title team, including star midfielder Emily Wold. Warren Hills beat Freehold in the '09 final en route to a Group 3 final appearance. Forward Lindsey Schott and midfielder Niki Miller will lead a solid group, and keep an eye on a talented freshman class that should make an impact.
2. High Point -- Wildcats return eight starters from last year's team that finished 22-2 and reached the North 1, Group 3 final. Coach Bev Keur's squad is loaded on both ends. Offensively, forwards Nikki Hull (16 goals), Darby Smith (22) and Brittany Papa (16) combined for 54 goals in 2010. On defense, Bea Cannavale is one of the area's top backs and goalie Kelsey Stoll had 13 shutouts last season. The fun will come later in the season when High Point will have to go through both No. 1 Warren Hills and No. 3 Voorhees in search of a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex title. The 'Cats gave Voorhees all it could handle in a 1-0 semifinal loss in 2010, which snapped their 15-game win streak to start the season.
3. Voorhees -- Tough call to put the talented Vikings at this spot based on their track record against area teams. Since 2000, Voorhees is 108-15-7 overall against Hunterdon and Warren schools, including a 15-4-3 mark against Warren Hills. New coach Taylor Webb, a former star player at the Hunterdon County school, will be counting on midfielder Erin Miller and forward Antoinette Metzler to pick up some of the scoring load after the departure of star middie Colleen Boyce, who set the school record for goals last season with 33. Both are talented players. The Vikes have always been known for playing rock-solid defense and goalie Kimmie Pianucci is one of the best around. She anchored a D that produced 14 shutouts in 2010. Expect this group to be hungry after a disappointing loss in the North 2, Group 3 final.
4. Phillipsburg -- Stateliners also have a new coach in former assistant Jennifer Paulus, who inherits a team that reached the North 1, Group 4 final a year ago. Unfortunately, P'burg was disqualified from playing for its fifth sectional crown after playing too many games. Forward Lauren Nunes is one to watch after posting 13 goals and 20 assists as a junior. Priscilla Howell (21 goals) is also a staple on a potent forward line. Defense may be a question with the loss of back Taylor Bay Sutton, but junior goalie Brittany Lavin really played well down the stretch last season and will be a key to the team's success this fall.
5. Belvidere -- Should be plenty of excitement surrounding this team after a 14-6-1 finish and a berth in the North 1, Group 1 playoffs last season. Coach Kristin Gaitan's Seaters have made a resurgence in recent years for a tradition-rich program that captured seven sectional crowns from 1982-96 and made seven trips to the Group 1 final during that stretch (winning in '89 and '90). This year's squad is primed for another postseason run with forward Tiffany McKenna, who led the 2010 team with18 goals, and goalie Josee Ritter (10 shutouts) leading the way, along with back McKenna Kels. This team is the favorite in the Skyland Conference Valley Division and should make some serious noise in the playoffs.
6. Wallkill Valley -- Rangers have a strong nucleus with midfielder Brittany Harlos and back Kristina Garrera, along with solid goalie Emily Stukenborg. Harlos may be the top player in the area, despite only posting eight goals for an offensively-challenged squad last season. Her strong defensive presence and athleticism at center mid is invaluable. Stukenborg, a three-year starter in the cage, had nine shutouts a year ago for a stingy D. Still, coach Irene Chernati's team, which scored one goal or fewer in 14 games last season, will have to score if it wants to make a postseason push. Wallkill could use a return to form from forward Andreanna Nordland, who scored 17 goals as a freshman before last season's total of nine.
7. Vernon -- The Vikings were a bit of a surprise team in 2010, reaching the North 1, Group 4 semifinals before Phillipsburg's disqualification vaulted coach Hollyce Schoepp's team into the title game against Montclair. The offense took a hit with the graduation of Lauren Poppe, who led the team with 23 goals. However, with seven starters back this team could make another postseason run. Midfielder Steph Peterson (10 assists) and forwards Melody Prisco and Kayla Turner-Boss bear watching this season.
8. Newton -- Tough to put the Braves so low in the initial rankings because this is a strong program with an excellent coach. However, the losses from last season are huge, including star forward Ashley Mosner (22 goals), who is now playing at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Forward Melanie Rudio (12 goals) and midfielder Alicia Grotyohann are back, along with goalie Amanda Norman. Still, coach Lisa Bechtel will have to replace 39 of the team's 55 goals on offense. The defense, which was so strong last season, will have to step up with the loss of Harley McMahon to graduation.
9. Hunterdon Central -- Odd to put a team that won only three games last season into the rankings, but coach Jenn Sponzo believes this year's squad will make last year a distant memory. Central, which has won 11 sectional and three state titles in its fine history, scored only 11 goals in 14 games a year ago, so needless to say that offense will be key to any success this fall. Forwards Kim Engelhart and Rebecca Jaeger will be counted on to put the ball in the cage. New goalies Amanda Calamito and Fran Orella, who are battling for the full-time job, will have to keep it out.
10. Pope John -- The Lions experienced a disappointing 2010 season after a strong campaign the previous year in which they reached the HWS semifinals and won 17 games. Third-year coach Susan Blanchard thinks her team will be much improved this fall. Center midfielder Meghan Chrobock and a forward line that has some talent will be the keys. However, the defense is young with a relatively new goalie, so the Lions will need to grow in a hurry.

2011 Field Hockey Preview: Hunterdon-Warren
The field hockey in the northwest corner of the state is always competitive and this year should be no exception. As usual, Voorhees and Warren Hills are expected to be among New Jersey's top teams, while Belvidere and Phillipsburg should make some noise come playoff time.
I'm also looking forward to a possible resurgence in the Hunterdon Central program, which is coming off three straight losing seasons for the first time since the late 1970s.
We also have new coaches at Voorhees and Phillipsburg. Former star player Taylor Webb takes over at her alma mater, while former assistant Jennifer Paulus replaces Carrie Saul at P'burg.
Let's take a closer look at all of the teams.
Note: Delaware Valley and South Hunterdon did not provide information despite numerous requests.
Belvidere
Coach: Kristin Gaitan (3rd season, 25-13-2)
2010 record: 14-6-1, 8-2 (second place Skyland Conference Valley Division)
Key returnees: MF Laura Cheatham, sr.; MF Kasey Keenan, sr.; MF Morgan Lucas, sr.; D McKenna Kels, sr.; GK Josee Ritter, sr.; F Tiffany McKenna, sr.; F Nicole DeHerde, jr.
Key losses: F Rachel Dalrymple (11 goals, 11 assists); F Taylor Rudd (16 goals).
Top newcomers: D Kristen Ostrzyzek, jr.; F Alison Bancroft, jr.
Outlook: County Seaters are back on the map after back-to-back winning campaigns under Gaitan, including last season's berth in the North 1, Group 1 playoffs where they lost on strokes to Mountain Lakes. Prior to that contest, Belvidere gave Phillipsburg all it could handle in a 3-2 loss. Seaters enjoyed a pair of six-game win streaks in 2010 and despite the huge losses of Dalrymple and Rudd, are expected to be a contender this fall. McKenna led the team with 18 goals last season, while Ritter was solid in the cage, anchoring a defense that produced 10 shutouts.
Hackettstown
Coach: Stephen Speirs (2nd season, 8-8-1)
2010 record: 8-8-1, 5-2-1 (second place NJAC Freedom Division)
Key returnees: F Kaitlin Perch, sr. (5 goals); F Megan Healy, sr.; GK Tanya Volkert, sr. (5 shutouts); D Rebecca Connelly, sr.; F Danielle DeGraw, sr.; D Julia Derco, jr.; F Stefania Swider, jr.
Key losses: F Meg Tillou (5 goals); D Brittany Drake (MVP); F Taylor Thorp (7 goals); F Marissa Keller; D Melissa Garcia; MF Taylor Zukoski; F Melissa Firth; MF Rachael Swider.
Top newcomers: MF Nicole Andes, so.; D Kelsey Connelly, so.; MF Nicole Felicetti, so.; F Sierramarie Fitzgerald, so.
Outlook: Tigers were hit extremely hard by graduation, losing eight starters, including standout back Brittany Drake. If Hackettstown was still in the Skyland Conference it would likely be facing a long season. However, in the NJAC Freedom, the Tigers should be able to compete and possibly be around the .500 mark again this season. The 2010 team went 1-1 in the postseason, falling 3-0 to eventual runner-up Newton in the North 1, Group 2 section. Perch, Healy and Volkert are a solid trio to build around this fall.
Hunterdon Central
Coach: Jenn Sponzo (12th season, 163-75-16)
2010 record: 3-12-1, 2-9-1 Skyland Conference Delaware Division
Key returnees: F Kim Engelhart, sr.; F Rebecca Jaeger, sr.; F Nicole Barrett, jr.; MF Kristen Given, sr.; MF Julie Earle, sr.
Key losses: F Allison Canonico; F Ashley Gargano; GK Christina Kossak.
Top newcomers: MF Allison Baligian, so.; D Chloe Maurice, jr.D Emily Zengel, jr.D Faith Harper; GK Fran Orella, jr.; GK Amanda Calamito, jr.; D Annie Hosler, so.
Outlook: Red Devils struggled in every phase last season, posting the program's lowest win total since the 1986 team went 2-6-1. However, Sponzo feels this year's squad is "a new team with a new attitude." Offensively, Central scored 11 goals in 16 games last season, so getting the ball in the cage is a top priority. Engelhart and Barrett, along with Jaeger will be responsible for that phase. A young defense and relative inexperience in the cage are other areas to watch. Sponzo, who is two wins away from passing Sandy Chronic for most coaching wins, said the group has worked hard and is excited about the season. That's coming from a highly-successful coach that doesn't sling around unwarranted praise. It will be good to see Central, which has won five sectional titles under Sponzo, get back in the mix.
North Hunterdon
Coach: Stacy Ditze (4th season, 32-43-2)
2010 record: 7-12-2, 4-6-2 Skyland Conference Delaware Division
Key returnees: MF Jenn Lambert, sr.; F Monica Chamberlin, sr.; D Michaela Martino, sr.; MF/D Sam Kose, sr.
Key losses: F Alyssa Fania (7 goals, 10 assists); F Maggie Meurer (8 goals); GK Lindsay D'Alessandro (6 shutouts).
Outlook: Lions, who lost on strokes to Randolph in the North 1, Group 4 playoffs in 2010, are extremely young and inexperienced with only four returning letterwinners. Lambert and Chamberlin are the only players with varsity experience. Ditze, who has done a nice job as both the field hockey and lacrosse coach at North, is counting on Martino at the center back spot to lead a junior-laden defense. Expect the Lions to struggle in a tough division, but also expect improvement as the season wears on.
North Warren
Coach: Laura (Elmo) Kasa (2nd season, 0-19)
2010 record: 0-19, 0-10 Skyland Conference Valley Division
Key returnees: GK Madison Moore, sr.; D Kathleen Wadiak, so.
Key losses: None.
Top newcomers: F Jessica Towey, fr.; MF Kali Thies, so.
Outlook: There's nowhere to go but up for the Patriots after a winless campaign. North Warren enters the season on a 23-game losing skid after losing the final four games in 2009. Pats' last win was 2-1 in overtime against North Plainfield on Oct. 22, 2009. Kasa returns everyone from a year ago, including sophomores Laura Gessler and Rebecca Hendershot, who scored the only goals in 19 games. Improving the offense will be the first task, since you can't win if you can't put the ball in the cage. Defensively, Moore will need to keep opponents from doing the same after North gave up 96 goals in 2010.
Phillipsburg
Coach: Jennifer Paulus (first season)
2010 record: 16-7, 8-4 Skyland Conference Raritan Division
Key returnees: F Lauren Nunes, sr. (13 goals, 20 assists); F Priscilla Howell, sr. (21 goals); F Katie Decker, jr. (8 goals); MF Molly Zgoda, jr. (5 goals); GK Brittany Lavin, jr.
Key losses: D Taylor Bay Sutton (9 goals, 10 assists); D Allison Blazejewski; MF Justine Schultz (9 assists); F Melissa Sheenan (8 goals).
Top newcomers: F Clare Smith, jr.; MF Mariya Saydek, jr.; MF Cassie Fortuna, sr.; D Allyson Butler, jr.; D Autumn Marinelli, sr.; D Renee Custodio, jr.; F Kelly Jankowski, so.; D Lindsay Collins, fr.
Outlook: Stateliners are coming off one of their best seasons under former coach Carrie Saul, who stepped down this past offseason to spend time with her family. Saul's teams went 109-105-8 in her 11 seasons and suffered a disappointing end to last year when the 'Liners were disqualified from playing in the North 1, Group 4 final for playing too many games. Paulus is excited for her first season in charge and will count on a talented forward line, led by Nunes and Howell. Defense will be a question with the graduation of Sutton, one of the program's top players in recent memory. Expect the Stateliners to be a major player in a ridiculously tough Raritan Division.
Voorhees
Coach: Taylor Webb (first season)
2010 record: 22-1, 12-0 (first place Skyland Conference Raritan Division)
Key returnees: F Antoinette Metzler (9 goals), sr.; MF Cat Chen, sr.; F/MF Tori Crans, so.; MF Erin Miller (13 goals), sr.; F Kat Francis, sr.; GK Kimmie Pianucci (14 shutouts), sr.; D Taylor Irving, sr.; F Ashley Kerekgyarto (7 goals), so.
Key losses: MF Colleen Boyce (33 goals, school record); MF/D Theresa Kolodzieski; MF Kristen Harrison; MF Jill Martinko.
Outlook: Vikings have a rich tradition and a new coach this season, as Webb takes over for Beth Stocker. During Stocker's eight seasons, Voorhees went 130-32-9 overall, the second-most wins for any coach in school history, while capturing four conference titles and one sectional championship. Webb, a former midfielder, was one of the best players in school history and is embarking on her first head coaching stint. The Vikes lost one of the school's best ever in Boyce, along with a solid midfield group. Miller and Metzler will have to pick up the bulk of the scoring, while Pianucci is one of the top keepers around, posting 14 shutouts for a defense that didn't allow a goal for eight straight games last season en route to a North 2, Group 2 sectional final appearance.
Warren Hills
Coach: Laurie Kerr (11th season, 175-57-11)
2010 record: 16-6, 9-3 Skyland Conference Raritan Division
Key returnees: F Lindsey Schott, sr. (21 goals); MF Niki Miller, jr. (8 goals, 7 assists); MF Nikki Schott, so. (6 goals, 16 assists); MF Jamie Miller, sr.; D Whitney Kowski, sr.; D Jen Hylkema, sr.; GK Katie Wintersteen, jr. (11 shutouts); F Sarah Detrick, sr.; F Kayla Grater, sr.; D Caitlin Clark, sr.; F Meghan Dempski, jr.
Key losses: F Tori Popinko (9 goals, 8 assists); MF Lauren Brands.
Top newcomers: F Sydney Muntone, fr.; MF Nikki Profita, fr.; D Amanda Crampton, fr.
Outlook: Blue Streaks have been a major player in both conference and state play during Kerr's entire tenure at the Warren County school and this year will be no exception. Warren Hills is loaded with talent, starting with Lindsey Schott and Nikki Miller. Schott is one of the school's most prolific scorers with career numbers of 45 goals and 30 assists. Miller emerged as a star last season as a sophomore and anchors a solid midfield, along with Nikki Schott, who was an impact freshman in 2010. Speaking of freshmen, watch Sydney Muntone, Amanda Crampton and Nikki Profita who lead a new wave of incoming talent. Kowski and Hylkema are solid defenders. In the cage, Wintersteen has worked hard this offseason and her play will be key if the Streaks are to reclaim a North 2, Group 3 title and go deep in the Group 3 playoffs.

North Hunterdon
Coach: Stacy Ditze (4th season, 32-43-2)
2010 record: 7-12-2, 4-6-2 Skyland Conference Delaware Division
Key returnees: MF Jenn Lambert, sr.; F Monica Chamberlin, sr.; D Michaela Martino, sr.; MF/D Sam Kose, sr.
Key losses: F Alyssa Fania (7 goals, 10 assists); F Maggie Meurer (8 goals); GK Lindsay D'Alessandro (6 shutouts).
Outlook: Lions, who lost on strokes to Randolph in the North 1, Group 4 playoffs in 2010, are extremely young and inexperienced with only four returning letterwinners.
Key losses: D Taylor Bay Sutton (9 goals, 10 assists); D Allison Blazejewski; MF Justine Schultz (9 assists); F Melissa Sheenan (8 goals).
Top newcomers: F Clare Smith, jr.; MF Mariya Saydek, jr.; MF Cassie Fortuna, sr.; D Allyson Butler, jr.; D Autumn Marinelli, sr.; D Renee Custodio, jr.; F Kelly Jankowski, so.; D Lindsay Collins, fr.

Key returnees: F Antoinette Metzler (9 goals), sr.; MF Cat Chen, sr.; F/MF Tori Crans, so.; MF Erin Miller (13 goals), sr.; F Kat Francis, sr.; GK Kimmie Pianucci (14 shutouts), sr.; D Taylor Irving, sr.; F Ashley Kerekgyarto (7 goals), so.

Warren Hills
Coach: Laurie Kerr (11th season, 175-57-11)
2010 record: 16-6, 9-3 Skyland Conference Raritan Division
Key returnees: F Lindsey Schott, sr. (21 goals); MF Niki Miller, jr. (8 goals, 7 assists); MF Nikki Schott, so. (6 goals, 16 assists); MF Jamie Miller, sr.; D Whitney Kowski, sr.; D Jen Hylkema, sr.; GK Katie Wintersteen, jr. 2011 Field Hockey Preview: Sussex
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.
The fall season is upon us and it's time to get rolling. We'll start with a look at the field hockey landscape in Sussex County, followed by a tour of the Hunterdon-Warren areas.
The information below was provided by coaches and some of my own statistical info.
High Point
Coach: Bev Keur (21st season, 291-111-14 in three stints)
2010 record: 22-2, 14-0 NJAC (first place American Division)
Key returnees: MF Sarah Clark, sr. (4 goals, 10 assists); D Bea Cannavale, sr. (7 goals); F Maureen Gill, jr. (7 goals); MF Sashal Hagan, sr. (9 assists); F Nikki Hull, sr. (16 goals, 16 assists); F Darby Smith, jr. (22 goals); F Brittany Papa, sr. (16 goals); F Michaela Macken, jr; GK Kelsey Stoll, sr. (13 shutouts, .828 save percentage).
Key losses: F Jess Armstrong; D Rebecca Nelson; D Emily Slate; D Rebecca Van Horn; F Carly Swanson.
Top newcomers: D Kelsey Fleury, sr.; D Stephanie Green, sr.; D Shannon Havens, sr.; D Katie Kohle, sr; F Hana Uchida, sr.; F Alyssa Vealey, sr; D Erica Williams, sr; F Kimberley Stromel, jr.
Outlook: Wildcats lost eight seniors to graduation, however only three were starters. High Point is clearly the top team in the county and will make noise in both the county and North 1, Group 3 tournaments. The 'Cats, who lost 4-3 in overtime to West Morris in last year's sectional final, return players that accounted for 76 of the team's 85 goals last season. Stoll is a solid keeper and will anchor a relatively new cast on defense.
Newton
Coach: Lisa Bechtel (22nd season, 320-98-9)
2010 record: 18-4, 7-0 NJAC (first place Freedom Division)
Key returnees: MF Alicia Grotyohann, sr. (2 goals, 4 assists); GK Amanda Norman, sr. (14 shutouts); F/MF Melanie Rudio, jr. (12 goals, 6 assists); D Sam Hofmann, sr.
Key losses: F Ashley Mosner (22 goals); F Paige Mosner (9 goals, 13 assists); MF Emily Burd (4 goals, 7 assists); D Harley McMahon (8 assists).
Top newcomers: N/A.
Outlook: Braves were hit hard by graduation and will look to Rudio and Grotyohann for leadership and offense. Norman was solid in the cage last season, but McMahon and company took a lot of the heat off their keeper. Norman will be tested more this season, putting more pressure on both the offense and defense if the Braves are to be successful again. The schedule is not very difficult outside of a Sept. 26 date at home against Madison, which Newton beat 2-1 last season. The Braves play every team in the county at least once, except High Point and Sparta.
Wallkill Valley
Coach: Irene Chernati (26th season, 320-161-5)
2010 record: 12-7, 5-3 (third place NJAC Freedom)
Key returnees: MF Brittany Harlos, sr. (8 goals); D Kristina Garrera, sr.; F Andreanna Nordland, jr. (9 goals); D Katie Bencivenga, sr.; GK Emily Stukenborg, jr. (9 shutouts).
Key losses: MF Meg Lermond; F Taylor Clayton (7 goals); Sara Struble.
Top newcomers: F Olivia Ganz, jr. Kylee Kulsar; F Felicia Wetzel, sr. (transfer from Pope John).
Outlook: Rangers have a solid nucleus with Harlos, Garrera, Nordland, Bencivenga and Stukenborg. Harlos was among the top players in West Jersey last season and is arguably the top player in Sussex County this season. Nordland scored 17 goals as a freshman, but the entire offense struggled in 2010. Take away a pair of five-goal wins over Blair and Lenape Valley, and Wallkill totaled 20 goals in its other 17 games. The Rangers scored one goal or fewer in 14 games and lost five of those, finishing with a nice 2-1 run in the North 1, Group 2 playoffs.
Vernon
Coach: Hollyce Schoepp (2nd season, 10-9-1)
2010 record: 10-9-1, 8-5-1 NJAC American Division
Key returnees: MF Steph Peterson, sr. (6 goals, 10 assists); F Melody Prisco, sr.; F Kayla Turner-Boss, sr.; MF Jessica Lambert, sr.; MF Kate Moran, sr.; F Rachel Colvin, jr.; GK Rhonda Richardsen, sr.
Key loss: F Lauren Poppe (23 goals).
Top newcomers: D Julie Cacace, so.
Outlook: Vikings lost one of the tri-county's top players in Poppe, but seven starters return from a team that reached the North 1, Group 4 final. Vernon lost to Phillipsburg, 8-1 in the semifinals, but the Warren County school was disqualified for playing too many games and the Vikes advanced by default, losing 5-0 to a very good Montclair squad in the title game. Look for the Vikings, now housed in North 1, Group 3, to improve on last year's win total.
Pope John
Coach: Susan Blanchard (3rd season, 21-18-2)
2010 record: 4-14-1, 3-9-1 NJAC American Division
Key returnees: MF Meghan Chrobock, sr.; F Shannon Connell, sr.; D Lauren Grosso, sr.; F Genna Lapola, sr.; MF Sydney Logan, sr.; F Lydia Hoff, jr.; F Madison Zavoda, jr.; F Kimberly Piwko, sr.
Key losses: MF Caroline McKinley (8 goals); GK Eliza Hinkes; F Felicia Wetzel (transferred to Wallkill Valley).
Top newcomers: GK Jenna Gloria, sr; D Katie Gallagher, jr.; D Nicola Sarao, so.; D Rachel Spetz, jr.
Outlook: Lions are one of the more intriguing teams. After a disappointing season in 2010 following a highly-successful campaign in Blanchard's first season, Pope John will be looking to climb toward the .500 mark and beyond in 2011. The defensive side is young, but Blanchard feels the offense will be a factor after last year's unit struggled to get the ball in the cage (24 goals in 19 games). Keep and eye on Chrobock, who inherits McKinley's spot at center-mid.
Kittatinny
Coach: Heather (Grimm) Reynolds (3rd season, 13-19-3)
2010 record: 4-10-2, 1-5-1 NJAC Freedom Division
Key returnees: F Savannah Quinn, sr; F Dylan Bradley, sr.; F Sam Hennet, jr.; F Lyle Freeman, jr.; MF/F Michaela Virga, sr.; MF/D Katie Kandel, sr.; MF/D Molly DeLaney, sr.; D Nicole Mazzacchi, sr.; GK Melissa Calascibetta, sr.
Key losses: D Charlotte Case; Jackie Romaine; F Sara GaNung..
Top newcomers: F Megan Calascibetta, jr.; D Dana Yanvary, fr.
Outlook: Cougars struggled last season on both ends, but figure to be improved this season, particularly on offense with virtually the entire forward line back this season. Case is a huge loss, one of the top backs in the county the previous two years.
Lenape Valley
Coach: Kate Rothman (first season)
2010 record: 1-15-2, 0-7-1 NJAC Freedom Division
Key returnees: MF Jenna Tambasco, sr.; MF Meg Delagrange, sr.; GK Deanna Utter, sr.
Key losses: F Alyx Direnzo; D Val Collins.
Top newcomers: N/A
Outlook: Rothman is the only new coach in the county, taking over for Joanne Hoover, whose teams went 84-115-13 the previous 11 seasons. Patriots are expected to be a young team trying to get better each game, which isn't the easiest thing in a tough conference and area.
Sparta
Coach: Emily Scott (eighth season)
2010 record: 2-15-1, 0-13-1 NJAC American Division
Key returnees: MF Maya Drummond, jr.; GK Jacquee Quinn, sr.
Key losses: MF Jen Silvestri; F Katie Kerbel; F Jenna Kennan; F Erica Roberts; MF Sam Casey; F Callie Rose.
Top newcomers: D Liz Anderson, so.; D Lauren Hunt, jr.; D Caitlin Forsyth, sr.; D Alison Hurley, so.; D Emily Melberger, so.; F Maggie DePaul, jr.
Outlook: Spartans have struggled the last three years, going 9-43-2 over that time. Scott is excited about this year's group, despite losing 10 players to graduation.
The fall season is upon us and it's time to get rolling. We'll start with a look at the field hockey landscape in Sussex County, followed by a tour of the Hunterdon-Warren areas.

Hello, yeah it's been awhile
Not much. How 'bout you?
A line from one of my favorite all-time songs by England Dan and John Ford Coley. That goes back some, but I digress.
Sorry I haven't been on in awhile. With the high school sports season in hiatus and my regular full-time gig at MLB.com, I just haven't had the time.
I got the bug to blog when I recently learned that a former field hockey player I covered in recent years has accepted a head coaching position. Kacy Friend, a standout player on some great Pen Argyl Area High School teams in Pennsylvania, is the new coach at Colonial League-rival Saucon Valley in Hellertown, Pa.
Friend was a star midfielder for Pen Argyl under coach Fran Rowley (formerly Fran Hall) in the mid-2000s. Friend's mother, Alice, was a very successful coach at Saucon and I believe she will be on her daughter's staff this fall.
That makes two former players that I covered getting head coaching jobs, Taylor Webb is set for her first year in charge at Voorhees, her alma mater.
Webb was also a star midfielder in high school and played for very successful coach Ann Bonavita, who was an unofficial assistant last season for the Vikings in Beth Stocker's final year at the helm. I'm sure Bonavita will serve in some capacity on Webb's staff.
I predict that both Friend and Webb will be outstanding coaches, much like they were as players. Both ladies showed great leadership on their high school teams and were always very classy on and off the field.
The fall sports season is right around the corner and I'm looking forward to the field hockey season and covering some football games this year which I haven't done much of in recent years. Camps for both will be in full swing in another week.
I also promise to hit the blog more until then.
