Five thoughts on Del Val's win over Voorhees

1. Credit Delaware Valley and coach Andy Fitz for having his kids ready to wrestle after a very difficult loss to North Hunterdon on Wednesday. Brian Baehr (220) and Holden Baker (132) delivered clutch wins and pick one or the other for the difference maker. Baehr's 4-3 win over Chet Stivers, who came in with a 7-2 record, was huge early on. Baker, a reserve, handed Walt Gonsiewski (9-3) a 7-3 loss at 132.

2. Bonus points will be a big factor for any one of the top area schools this season. North Hunterdon, Delaware Valley and Voorhees all have some vulnerable spots and will live on the edge all season. Another big factor for Del Val was Mike Adam (113) and Don Glorioso (195) holding their Voorhees opponents to three-point decisions.

3. Forfeits with the match still in the balance drive me crazy and I can't understand Voorhees coach Eric Hall's decision to give Derek Zehnbauer a gift six points at 152 with only two bouts to follow. Del Val led 27-22 after a pin by Kyle Honickel at 145. After the forfeit, Del Val was up 11, forcing Voorhees to get six in both of the final bouts. Steven Baker beat Kody Eichlin, 6-3, at 160 and state runner-up Jadaen Bernstein received a forfeit with the match out of reach. Never give away six points. Maybe your wrestler holds to a major or tech to save a point or two. You never know.

4. It's great to see big matches that really bring out the crowds. Big win for Delaware Valley on Alumni Night in Alexandria Township and a lot of former stars were on hand, including state champs Jeff Segreaves and John Pasterkiewicz. The Terriers always do those special nights right. I remember covering several matches where wrestlers got their 100th victories in that gym and it's always done with first class at Del Val. Kudos to all involved with recognizing those former greats.

5. Voorhees has now lost 14 straight in this series, which Del Val leads 30-14-1 dating to 1975. The Vikings' last win was in 1998, the last season for longtime coach Bob Hall, who started the program. His son, Eric, is doing a fine job of bringing the tradition back as evidenced by a 22-5 season a year ago and a 7-1 start this campaign. Now it's time to beef up the schedule a bit, as I think that was also a difference maker tonight with the Terriers already having been through the ringer against Franklin and North Hunterdon in advance of this one.

Boresch Duals highlight weekend mat action

The seventh annual Henry Boresch Duals will be contested on Saturday at Newton High School. The event, named in honor of the legendary Braves coach, has become one of the more popular tournaments on the regular-season calendar in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex area.

South Plainfield, the 2011 Group 3 runner-up, headlines the field and is among four new teams in this year's tournament, along with Morris Knolls, Secaucus and Livingston. Host Newton has competed in five of the previous six championship matches, winning four.

Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for students. Weigh-ins will be held from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. All times approximate as a new round will begin following the completion of the previous session.

Breakdown: It's been awhile since Voorhees got some satisfaction -- cue up 2001: A Space Odyssey -- in this longtime rivalry and you can bet the Vikings are hungry to end the drought tonight. Terriers are coming off a tough loss to North Hunterdon, so they are trying to avoid going 0-for-2 in the county. Vikes present some interesting matchup problems for the visitors and vice versa. Fitz likes to move Van Doren around for the best matchup, but Bernstein, a state runner-up, could chase him if Van Doren goes up to 182. Best bet is that Van Doren goes 160, which would likely move Zehnbauer to 182, provided Del Val gets the flip to avoid Bernstein there. Vikings are solid at 120 and 126, but Del Val is favored there. Another intriguing bout could take place at 145 (D. Zehnbauer-Honickel) should the Terriers need to make that happen. Two very key bouts at 106 and 113. Straight up, Del Val is favored at 120, 126, 138, 152, 160 and 285. Voorhees has the edge at 132, 145, 170, 182, 195 and 220. I see a 7-7 split and another tight one, but once again the bonus points don't favor Del Val.

Prediction: Voorhees, 33-31.

Breakdown: This has been one of the best rivalry matches in recent seasons and this should be another classic, as both teams are very evenly matched. Terriers bested the Lions by 11 1/2 points last week for first place in the John Goles Invitational. The teams split four head-to-head bouts in the tournament, including a 6-5 win for Vrancken over Van Doren in a matchup of state qualifiers. We likely won't see that rematch, as Del Val seeks out every win it can get. Fitz likes to move Van Doren around for the best matchup, but he'll have a tough go wherever he lands in this one, as the Lions are strong from 160-195. If he gets the flip, look for Fitz to bump Intili away from Ciavarro and Zehnbauer up to try and sweep 138 and 145. Terriers will likely need that move to win. Straight up I see a 7-7 split with 145 and 220 as key bouts. Terriers are favored at 120, 126, 138, 152, 170 (with Van Doren) and 285. The Lions have the edge at 106, 113, 132, 160, 182 and 195 with the potential for bonus points in all six. Tough one to call, but I think the hosts rack up the bonus points to pull it off.

Prediction: North Hunterdon, 37-32.
