Wrestling: New Jersey Writers Association Top 20

With sectional and state championships on the line this week, five teams from the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex area headline this week's New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20 poll.

Phillipsburg (12-1), which is the top seed in North 2, Group 4 and the odds-on-favorite to win sectional (its 36th) and Group 4 titles for a fourth straight season, holds steady in the No. 5 spot.

The Stateliners, who rolled to a 58-9 win over No. 8 Sayreville tonight in a first-round sectional matchup, have not won four consecutive state championships since 1995-2000 -- the first two during that six-year run coming in Group 3. P'burg claimed the program's 20th title with a 40-21 victory over Clearview in last year's Group 4 final.

Pope John (15-1) sits in the No. 6 spot as the Lions compete for their seventh sectional title and first since 1994 in rugged Non-Public North A, which includes the top two teams in the state -- No. 1 Bergen Catholic and No. 2 Delbarton.

Hunterdon Central (20-2) follows in the No. 7 spot. The Red Devils seek their 21st sectional title as the No. 1 seed in Central Jersey, Group 5, having already matched the 1988-89 team for most wins in a season. That could be a good omen, as that squad, which finished 20-2, won the program's first and only state title in '89.

Delaware Valley (18-3) falls one spot to No. 11, while North Hunterdon (16-5) enters for the first time this season at No. 19.

The Terriers are seeking their third straight title in Central Jersey, Group 2 -- something the program hasn't done since winning four in a row from 1987-90 -- while the Lions are the No. 3 seed in North 2, Group 4, with No. 17 Middletown North the No. 2 seed.

Wrestling: Maio, Cougars roar past 'Cats in rivalry tilt

HAMPTON TWP. -- Kittatinny junior Perry Maio is making a habit of producing clutch wins in one of the biggest rivalry matches in this neck of the woods.

Maio's 3-0 decision over talented High Point freshman Billy Talmadge at 132 pounds was the turning point as the Cougars went on to a 36-25 victory on Friday night before a crowd of 1,000 in the 42nd meeting between these Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference and Sussex County rivals.

Kittatinny (15-4) has now won two straight in this series for the first time since a seven-match streak from 1999-2005. Maio got things started in the opening bout last season with a 2-1 win that sent the Cougars on to a 38-23 victory in Wantage.

But Friday night's win ranks among the biggest of Maio's career -- perhaps his finest effort.

"This is my best win so far," said Maio, who converted a huge takedown with 56 seconds left in the third period after Talmadge got in deep on a high-crotch attempt. "We knew they were bumping their lineup and there would be some tossups. [Talmadge] is a very tough freshman and I knew that I couldn't sit on a 1-0 lead. I got my hips up, and I was able to come out on top in the scramble."

For longtime coach John Gill, seeing his team come up big up-and-down the lineup was especially rewarding, and against a team that has given him fits over his outstanding career. But Maio's win made Gill especially happy.

"That was a big, big turning point for us ... a huge six-point swing," said Gill, now 13-23-1 overall vs. High Point. "Perry Maio has been wrestling every stud on the other teams we've faced. The kid was around .500 and he's got some improving to do, but maybe today will be a season-turner for him. He was focused and has matured a lot. He hasn't had a great year, but I'm very happy for him."

High Point (13-5), which has lost three of the last five meetings and still holds a 27-14-1 lead in the series, won seven bouts, but simply did not get enough bonus points where it was heavily favored in the lower weights, in addition to losing a key bout at 132. As he did last weekend against Cranford, 'Cats coach John Gardner forfeited the final bout with the outcome still in doubt -- at least on the scoreboard -- as Kittatinny had a five-point lead when stunned senior Josh Klimek (24-4) got his hand raised at 195.

"We were being realistic with what we had in front of us," said Gardner, who did have junior Hunter Flores (11-4) weighed in at 195 and had earlier given sophomore 170-pounder Grayson Sabo (7-9) the night off. "We understood what we were up against. No disrespect to our kids, but we need all hands on deck for sectionals [starting on Monday]. But hats off to Kittatinny."

Kittatinny sophomore Zach Mafaro got the place rocking in the opening bout at 220 with his pin of former district runner-up Cliff Rutter in 1:46 -- using a headlock and then a body press for the fall. But junior Thomas Hubmaster's 6-3 win at 285 sparked a four-bout run that gave High Point a 16-6 lead through five bouts. But Kittatinny saved some points as heavily-favored Brandon LaRue could only muster a 4-0 win over Derek Molfetto at 106, before freshman Devon Liebl came through with a 16-4 major at 113, as Gardner bumped his lineup from 113-126.

After Devin Flannery's pin at 120, Kittatinny seized back the momentum as two-time district champion Mark DiGeronimo twice put Maverick Liebl on his back before getting the pin with a near-side cradle in 2:44.

"Our job is to get bonus points and not give them up," Gardner said. "We gave up a lot of bonus points and [Kittatinny] did a real good job of getting them."

Maio's win cut the deficit to 16-15, but High Point won at 138 and 145 to stretch the lead to seven. Junior Trey Osborn got a takedown off a bearhug with one second left in sudden-victory overtime for a 4-2 win over Calvin Brook at 145. Osborn won, 3-1, when they met in January at the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament.

But Kittatinny won four of the last five bouts, including a pin by junior Shane Smith at 160 that gave the Cougars their first lead since the opening bout -- 24-22. At 152, Kasey Hotz overcame an early 3-0 deficit for a 9-3 victory over Trevor Kocher.

Junior Aric Wingle gave High Point a short-lived 25-24 lead with his 3-2 win over Josh Hiler at 170, but freshman Jacob Mafaro decked Matthew McDonnell with cradle at 182 to put Kittatinny in front for good.

"That was their last gasp -- Smith is a first-year varsity wrestler -- and we knew we still had Mafaro and Klimek left," Gill said. "Where we started we had to gamble and go for both wins [at 220 and 285]. Litterio saved us three points, we saved points at 106 and 113. I'm proud of them. This is one team that's had my number, so it's nice to get two-in-a-row."

Both teams move on to sectionals as No. 1 seeds in their respective sections. Kittatinny will next host No. 8 Boonton in North 1, Group 1, while High Point takes on Ramsey on Monday night.

The 'Cats scored a 32-31 win in the North 1, Group 2 quarterfinals in 2015 -- the first postseason meeting between the longtime rivals after no regular-season dual for the first time in series history. Kittatinny snapped a seven-match skid in the series with a 35-18 win at home in 2013. Prior to that stretch, the Cougars won seven straight from 1999-2005.

285 -- Jr. Thomas Hubmaster (12-8) vs. Jr. Chris Litterio (10-8).

Breakdown: The annual battle for Sussex County bragging rights is shaping up to be another classic. Both are coming off wins to secure division titles on Wednesday -- High Point winning the Freedom Division with a 39-24 victory over Newton, while Kittatinny nailed down another Colonial championship with a 63-10 waxing of Hopatcong. The Cougars did not wrestle Newton for the first time in series history (weather) so we can't use that match as a guide for this one. In addition, DiGeronimo and Hotz have been in and out of the lineup so Kittatinny may not be at full strength. Straight up, High Point is favored at 106, 113, 126, 138, 145 and 285. Kittatinny has the edge at 120, 132, 152, 170, 182 and 195 (Z. Mafaro). I'd call 160 and 220 (Rutter vs. J. Mafaro) tossups. The 'Cats are strong down below, while the Cougars are big-time favorites in the upper weights. Osborn scored a 3-1 win over Brook in the only head-to-head meeting between these teams at the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament. But the rematch, and the matchup at 160, will likely play a huge role in the outcome here. For the visitors, the path to success relies on getting bonus points down low -- depending on where the match starts, the 'Cats could jump out to a big lead -- and limiting the points up top. They will also need at least one win at 145, 160 and 220. If they get two, the Cougars could be in big trouble. Would Gardner bump the lineup from 113 -- inserting D. Liebl to face Nelson in order to gain an extra win from 113-132. That move could be a wash depending on how the bonus points shake out. Gill has the option of having J. Mafaro down at 182 -- he has wrestled once at that weight class -- where he'd be favored, and bumping Klimek to 195 and Z. Mafaro to 220 for a very good chance to win all three, and the possibility of winning eight bouts overall. If you're looking for a potential upset, the bout at 120 between region qualifiers should be an interesting one. M. Liebl is wrestling real well of late, while DiGeronimo, a two-time district champion, has missed some recent matches. Kittatinny likely needs two of the close ones, unless it can minimize the damage down low. In any event, this should be really tight.

Prediction: High Point, 32-31.

Wrestling: 'Cats, 'Liners enjoy championship nights

High Point's wrestling team was back in championship form on Wednesday night.

In what may be the first of two matchups against Newton in a week, the Wildcats won eight bouts, including four pins, en route to a 39-24 victory to clinch the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference Freedom Division title in Wantage.

High Point (13-4, 4-0 division), which has won 14 in a row in this series since a 31-27 loss in 2003 that snapped its 17-match win streak over Newton, claimed the program's seventh title in the eight-year history of the NJAC, missing only two seasons ago when Lenape Valley won the Freedom Division. The 'Cats also won the last four Sussex County Interscholastic League titles before the NJAC formed for the 2009-10 season.

"We told them that this is one of the things they can do, something they can attain if they compete to win," said High Point coach John Gardner, now 18-1 overall vs. Newton. "They were excited, especially some of the new kids in the mix, and some who haven't had much success individually. It was a chance to be part of something bigger than them."

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Pope John cruised to a 45-12 win over Sparta to claim the American Division title, while Kittatinny rolled to a 63-10 victory over Hopatcong to secure the Colonial Division crown.

Newton (10-8, 3-1) raced out to a 12-0 lead through the first three bouts, including junior Jonathon Borgognoni's 6-4 win over Aric Wingle in a matchup of region qualifiers in the opening bout at 160 pounds. Sophomore Nick Brigante followed with a 3-2 win in sudden-victory overtime at 170 -- the Braves won three of the four OT bouts on the night -- as Grayson Sabo was penalized one point for an illegal front-headlock.

"I thought we wrestled well. We won six bouts, three in overtime," said Newton coach Eric Bollette, now 1-15 all-time against High Point. "This is the closest we've been [15-point spread] against them in awhile [since the four-point win in 2003]."

Junior Hunter Flores (195) and senior Cliff Rutter (220) started a run of seven straight wins for High Point with key decisions. Flores scored an 8-4 victory over Devin Mager, while Rutter, a former district runner-up, got a takedown in OT for a 6-4 win over Luke Fischer in what was considered a tossup bout. Junior Thomas Hubmaster's pin at 285 tied the match at 12.

But High Point pulled away behind its powerful lower weights as Brandon LaRue (106), Devin Flannery (113) and Billy Talmadge (126) all won with pins, while Maverick Liebl received a forfeit at 120. Newton ended the run with a 12-10 win in sudden victory by Michael Freda at 132, but the three-point decision sealed it for High Point, which led 36-15 with three bouts to go.

In an entertaining bout at 145, senior Nick Giordano got a late reversal in the third period and subsequent takedown in overtime for a 4-2 win over Trey Osborn, who rode Giordano out in the second period and nearly all of the third after getting an early reversal.

High Point earned the No. 1 seed for the upcoming North 1, Group 2 sectional tournament, while Newton is the No. 5 seed. If both win their openers on Monday, it will set up a rematch here in the semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 8. There has never been a postseason meeting in this series, and the 'Cats now hold a 37-7 edge dating to 1970, going 36-1 since 1980. Six of the Braves' wins were from 1970-85, with no meetings from 1973-76.

'Liners stay tough on Vikes

Sophomore Travis Jones' pin at 113 pounds was among the highlights for Phillipsburg, which won nine bouts en route to a 43-21 win over Voorhees to nail down the Skyland Conference Raritan Division title in Lebanon Township.

P'burg (11-1, 6-0 division) ran the division table for a seventh straight season in claiming the program's 21st championship since joining the Skyland Conference for the 1995-96 season. The Stateliners have gone 43-0 in winning the last seven titles, and have not dropped a division contest since a 39-13 loss to Hunterdon Central on Jan. 16, 2010.

Jones decked region qualifier Colby Koshinski in 3:41 to give P'burg a 34-18 with three bouts left. Voorhees sophomore Hunter Rinehart scored a 5-3 win over Tyris Manley at 120, but P'burg sophomores Cody Harrison and Kyle Tino closed it out with a pin and a decision.

Voorhees (13-7, 0-6) fell to 0-25 all-time against P'burg, while senior Michael Fernandes (27-0) remained unbeaten with his 94th career win -- pinning Cody Cruts in 23 seconds.
