2021 Field hockey preview: Hunterdon-Warren

Belvidere County Seaters

Coach: Beth Franceschino (eighth season of second stint, 80-43-8).

2020 record: 8-4-1, 6-3-1 (third place Skyland Conference Mountain Division).

Key returnees: MF Emma Dalrymple, sr.; MF-D Nora Dornich, sr.; D Autumn Banghart, sr.; MF Mackenzie Hausamann, sr.; GK Kaitlin Williams (7 shutouts), jr.; F Ellie Kardos, jr.; F Kayla Connors (3 goals), jr.; F Emerson LaBar (5 goals), so.; D Taylor Dultz, sr.; F-MF Rachael Rowe, sr.

Key losses: F Olivia Zmyewski (9 goals, 7 assists); D Kinsey Lockard; F Jordan Yeisley (3 goals); F Marianna Crisafulli (3 goals).

Top newcomers: MF Grace Horvath, jr.; MF-D Rebecca Ferrullo, jr.

Outlook: County Seaters are coming off seven straight winning seasons, capturing division titles in three of the previous seven years, but their postseason runs the past two campaigns ended with shutout losses to Pequannock (2-0 in the Northwest A final in 2020) as the program seeks its first sectional title since 1996. The offense took a major hit with the loss of Zmyewski (Pace University), who logged 20 goals from 2019-20. LaBar emerged as a force last season and will be counted on for bigger things this fall. One of the biggest questions entering 2020 was in the cage, but Williams emerged as one of the top goalies in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex area. If the offense can produce, watch out for this team in the division and playoff races.

Delaware Valley Terriers

Coach: Tiffany Kuhl (first season).

2020 record: 5-7, 4-6 (fourth place Skyland Conference Mountain Division).

Key returnees: MF Rachel McIntyre (4 goals, 6 assists), sr.; F Samantha Snowden (3 goals), sr.; F Annabelle Neibuhr (3 goals), sr.; D Rachel Ferri, sr.; F Natalie Heiser (6 goals), jr.; GK Grace Jenkins, so.; GK Madeline Beyers, jr.; D Korinne Pryor, sr.; F Zoe Sabosik, sr.; MF Julia Meyko, sr.; MF Alyssa McGlothlin, sr.

Key losses: F Kristen Bill; MF-D Emily Norgard.

Top newcomers: D Samantha Pinelli, fr.

Outlook: Kuhl inherits a program that went 94-79-7 under Stephanie Rifflard the previous 10 seasons and reached the North 2, Group 2 semifinals in 2017. After consecutive quarterfinal losses in North 2, Group 1 in 2018 and '19, the Terriers, who went from 15 wins and a division title in 2019 to five in '20, bowed out of the Central West A playoffs with a 2-1 overtime loss to nemesis South Hunterdon. Making another postseason run will depend on the offense as Snowden, who led the team with 17 goals in 2019, will be counted on to approach that total again, along with Heiser and McIntyre. The defense figures to be in better shape as Beyers got experience in the cage last season. If the offense can find consistency, expect this team to challenge for a division title.

Hackettstown Tigers

Coach: Rachael Gorski (third season, 14-13-2).

2020 record: 5-4-1, 2-1-1 (second place NJAC White South Division).

Key returnees: F Kiara Koeller (6 goals, 3 assists), so.; F Skyler Sciaretta, so.; MF Amy Wood, sr.; F Emma Patton (6 goals), sr.; MF Aaisha Taha, jr.; F Ali Cetani, jr.; MF Erin Magnotta, jr.; GK Emily Newton (2 shutouts), so.; MF-D Abby Zellars, jr.; GK Megan Kerwin, so.; MF-D Sophia Smith, jr.

Key losses: F Megan Doyle (8 goals, 7 assists); D Adriana Beam.

Top newcomers: F Brynn Otto, fr.

Outlook: Tigers are looking to get back to elite status after combining for 14 wins the previous two seasons since a 19-win campaign and the program's first Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament title in 2018. Finding consistent offense will be the main challenge following the loss of Doyle, who was one of the area's top scorers. Koeller and Patton will provide a nice 1-2 punch. Newton did a nice job in her first season as the starting goalkeeper, as the defense yielded three goals or fewer in all 10 games a year ago. This team will be tested early in the season opener against Warren Hills on Thursday at Morrison Field.

Hunterdon Central Red Devils

Coach: Jenn Sponzo (23rd season, 306-154-20).

2020 record: 8-5, 7-4 (second place Skyland Conference Delaware Division).

Key returnees: F Sarah DeStefano (3 goals), sr.; F Jennifer Tokash (7 goals), sr.; MF Maria Ippolito, jr.

Key losses: MF Sarah Woods (7 goals); D Jordan Sponzo (6 assists); D Rebecca Woods; GK Alexea Karpinski (4 shutouts); D Shannon Parker.

Top newcomers: D Laurel Hanrahan, jr.; MF Keria Frey, jr.; F Amanda Walker, so.; F Sydni Waldron, sr.; MF Lainey Lynott, jr.

Outlook: Red Devils, who captured their first sectional title in seven years in 2019, took a bit of a step back last season -- dropping a 1-0 decision to eventual champion Ridge in the Central West B playoffs after a 2-1 win in their regular-season matchup. Central, which reached the Group 4 final two years ago, will once again have to deal with nemesis Bridgewater-Raritan in the division race and likely North Hunterdon and Ridge in the postseason. Goals were hard to come by most games last season against the better teams on the schedule and that may be the case again with DeStefano and Tokash as the only returning proven scorers. The defense also lost some key players to graduation and the tragic passing of Karpinski, one of the top goalies in the area, shortly after last season. A pair of sophomores -- Kelly Weaver and Danyka Podinker, will look to seize the starting role in the cage. Central is always well coached and usually tends to play up to the competition, so expect this team to perhaps start off slow and be much improved by season's end.

North Hunterdon Lions

Coach: Geoff Chrisman (first season).

2020 record: 11-3, 9-2 (second place Skyland Conference Raritan Division).
Captains: O. Reeder, L. Masters, J. Skeffington

Key returnees: F Lauren Masters (26 goals, 7 assists), jr.; MF Olivia Reeder (10 goals, 11 assists), sr.; F Ryan Anderson (10 goals, 18 assists), sr.; MF Sara Roberts (11 goals, 9 assists), jr.; F Ava Laible (6 goals), sr.; F Katie Roberts, sr.; F-MF Jamie Skeffington (4 goals), sr.; D-MF Amanda Lucy Bachert, sr.; GK McKenna Laman (5 shutouts), sr.; GK Stephanie Teipel, jr.; D Sarah Bisson, jr.; D Molly Claus, so.; F Maggie Sampson, jr.

Key loss: MF-D Marley Hoffman.

Top newcomers: MF Kendall Varty, so.; D Brenna Benson, sr.; D Annika Hoyer, fr.; MF Brooke Cahill, fr.; D Tara Crescenzi (transfer from Voorhees), sr.; MF Lily Kumar (transfer from Mount St. Mary), sr.; D Caroline Brenckle, sr.

Outlook: Lions, who finished 4-14 in 2018, have gone 26-11 over the previous two seasons and with a wealth of returning talent, plus a couple of talented transfers, enter the 2021 campaign as the team to beat in the division and Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament. The 2019 season was the program's first winning campaign in 10 years and its first sectional final appearance since 1993. All of that after the program went 47-171-5 over the 11 seasons prior to 2019. Chrisman, a former assistant coach,  takes over and will count on a potent offensive attack led by the speedy 1-2 punch of Masters and Anderson, who have combined for 82 goals and 66 assists the past two seasons. Masters, a University of Louisville commit, is the program's all-time points leader and led all HWS scorers with 26 goals and 59 points in 2020. She enters her junior season with 56 career goals -- two shy of owning the program's all-time mark held by Beth Gromlowicz (57 from 1983-86). Anderson is North's career assists leader with 50. Reeder, a Kent State commit, scored 10 goals in each of the past two seasons. Defensively, Laman, a Montclair State commit, will anchor what should be a solid unit and quite likely the key to any championship run. Like Hunterdon Central, North lost the rematch with Ridge -- 2-1 in double-overtime in the Central West B semifinals -- to end its season and that loss will be a driving force.

North Warren Patriots

Coach: Carie Murphy (first season).

2020 record: 0-7, 0-4 (fourth place NJAC White South Division).

Key returnees: MF Devon Benzaia, sr.; F Aubrey Deldin, sr.; GK Kathryn Swistak, sr.; D Devon Curreri, jr.; MF Kate Gerkhardt, jr.; GK Olivia DiGuiseppi, sr.; D Kelly DiMaio, sr.; F Nicole Eitner, sr.; D Dominique Morreale, sr.; MF Grace Pereira, sr.; D Elisabeth Zellers, sr.; F Shaelin May, jr.; F Elloree Neary, jr.

Key losses: F Maddie Allen; F Heather Kemper.

Top newcomers: D Marilyn Dominguez, jr.; F Kathryn Close, so.; F Keira Hannam, so.; MF Madalyn Hawkswell, so.; D Nolagh Perst, so.; MF Angelina Plut, so.; MF-D Jordyn Pohl, so.; GK Julianna Sagan, so.; F Delaney Benzaia, fr.; MF-D Kayleigh Dolinsky, fr.; GK Nya Gillen, fr.; MF-D Julia Hawkswell, fr.; F-MF Kendall Perrone, fr.; MF Alex Pohl, fr.; F Delia Voorhees, fr.

Outlook: Patriots have a new coach and are coming off a tough winless COVID-shortened campaign. Murphy inherits a program that went 24-71-6 the previous six seasons under Brian Gravatt, now the school's athletic director. Until last season, North had hovered around the five-win mark every year since their last winning season (10-9-1 in 2014). After scoring a total of two goals in 2020, any turnaround will start on the offensive end. Devin Benzaia, Eitner DiMaio are the only returning players who have scored a varsity goal (one each in a five-win 2019 season), so that's going to be the biggest challenge. The defense, which also struggled last season, has an experience goalkeeper in Swistak. The good news is that numbers in the program are up, with 14 sophomores and freshmen. Expect this to be another rebuilding and learning season.

Phillipsburg Stateliners

Coach: Toni Popinko (fifth season, 27-44-3).

2020 record: 6-4, 6-4 (fourth place Skyland Conference Raritan Division).

Key returnees: D Emilia Lopes, sr.; D Madison Darmstadt, sr.; F Samantha Helman (5 assists), jr.; F Gracie Merrick (3 goals), jr.; D Jillian Miller, so.; GK Beth Kelly, jr.; GK Amanda Parr, sr.

Key losses: MF Allison Devlin (3 goals); MF Morgan Cherry.

Top newcomers: MF Julia Butler, so.; F Avery Ritt, so.

Outlook: Stateliners bounced back from a tough 2019 campaign, but a COVID-19 shutdown in early November, shortly after a good 2-1 win over regional champion Ridge that capped a three-game win streak, prevented them from playing in the postseason. Inconsistency on offense has been an issue in previous years, so Helman and Merrick will be counted on heavily to lead in that department. The defense should be a strength, with Darmstadt being one of the top backs in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex area, anchoring that group. Kelly and Parr (University of Mount Olive commit) shared the duties in the cage in 2020. The 'Liners compete in one of the toughest divisions in the state (North Hunterdon, Ridge and Warren Hills) and that will make them better by season's end.

South Hunterdon Eagles

Coach: Michelle Ryan (first season).

2020 record: 12-4, 9-3 (first place Skyland Conference Mountain Division).

Key returnees: F Natalia Oprzadek (9 goals 14 goals), sr.; D Zoe Horan (6 goals), sr.; MF Skyler Badessa, sr.;  F Sarah Faherty (11 goals), jr.; D Bianca Gambino, sr.; D Sofia Gambino, sr.; GK Tiernan Swayhoover (6 shutouts 9 shutouts), sr.; F Kylie Masterson (4 assists), jr.; MF Willa Ludwig, jr.; F-MF Briana Tumler, jr.; D Katie Costantini, jr.

Key losses: F Chandler Storcella (8 goals, 5 assists); MF Rebecca Phillips (9 goals, 3 assists).

Top newcomers: MF Nina Daley, so.; MF Julia Stoff, so.; D Alexa Hughes, so.; D Lina Weiland, fr.; MF Cambria Loesch, so.

Outlook: Eagles may be low on numbers, but they certainly aren't short on talent, and this group looks to make another postseason run after a tough 4-0 loss to eventual champion Voorhees in the Central West A semifinals ended their 2020 season. Ryan inherits a program that rebounded under former head coach Stephanie Davis-Hart, whose teams went 72-48-3 the previous seven seasons and 29-7 the past two campaigns in capturing back-to-back division titles. Storcella and Phillips, who combined for 47 goals the past two seasons, will be missed on the offensive side, but Oprzadek (23 goals combined in 2019 and '20) will help pick up the slack, along with Faherty, who is coming off a breakout sophomore campaign. South averaged three goals per game a year ago (48 total in 16 games). Swayhoover, a three-year starter, is one of the best goalkeepers in the HWS area, and she will have a fine group of backs in front of her, including Horan, who scored six goals last season. This is the team to beat in the division.

Voorhees Vikings

Coach: Kathryn Roncoroni (first season).

2020 record: 14-1-1, 10-0 (first place Skyland Conference Valley Division).

Key returnees: MF Sadie Eichlin (8 goals, 14 assists), sr; MF Kate Matyas (4 goals, 6 assists), jr.; F Kate Cookson (5 goals, 10 assists), so.; MF Alexa Barkman, so.; D Kaitlyn Boyle, jr.; F Leigha Schultze (11 goals), sr.; F Ava Smadi, jr.; MF Kylie Roessler, sr.; F Noel Jeskulski, so.

Key losses: F Katie McLean (18 goals, 21 assists); D Grace Schiavo (5 goals); GK Noelle Gabrish (10 shutouts); F Tess Rodenberger (17 goals).
Voorhees seeks its 9th sectional title in 2021.

Top newcomers: F Amanda Korfin, fr.; GK Katie Robbins, so.

Outlook: Vikings really came together in what was a tough season all around due to the pandemic and captured the Central West A regional title -- with their only loss coming to rival North Hunterdon (3-0 on Nov. 2). It was the program's first to the Lions since 1990 and snapped a 41-game win streak in the series dating to '92. Enter a new coach and familiar face as Roncoroni, the school's all-time scoring leader, inherits a program that went 47-13 the past three seasons under Shannon Hughes. A lot of offense was lost to graduation, including McLean, second in the HWS area with 57 points in 2020. But Eichlin is one of the state's top players and really thrived in the midfield after making the switch from left back. Matyas is another solid force in the middle and Cookson is coming off a fine rookie year. The defense, which is usually a hallmark of Voorhees teams, may be a question with a new goalkeeper and the loss of Schiavo, an outstanding defensive player. Expect this group to be much better by season's end and it would not be surprise to see the Vikes, who should cruise to another division title, challenging for the HWS Tournament title.

Warren Hills Blue Streaks

Coach: Josie Potter (fifth season, 80-11-1).

2020 record: 14-0, 11-0 (first place Skyland Conference Raritan Division).

Key returnees: F Maddie Summitt (18 goals, 11 assists), sr.; D Emily Dvorsky, sr.; MF Ryleigh Reagan, sr.; D Maddie Moreno, jr.; D Holly Ort, sr.; F Dimitra Georgoutsos, sr.

Warren Hills is 80-11-1 over the last 4 years.
Key losses: F Simryn Desai (9 goals, 15 assists); MF Ashley Moskal (5 goals, 5 assists); F Jenna Wyckoff (11 goals, 8 assists); MF Sarah Korczukowski (8 goals, 5 assists); F Julianna Valli (14 goals, 4 assists); D Liz Schlaffer; MF Olivia Chomut; D Kylie Compton; GK Emily Schlessinger (10 shutouts); MF-D Angela Pawloski (3 goals).

Top newcomers: MF Shivya Desai, fr.; MF Hailey Hoffman, so.; F Sarah Salameh, so.; F Jess Pawloski, so.; GK Sydney White, so.; GK Casey Kozelnik, fr.; F Gi Cioni, so.; MF Gabby Fama, jr.; F Addie Conaboy, so.; F Cameron Dunn, sr.

Outlook: Blue Streaks have been the standard bearer in Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex -- 80-11-1 overall and 51-4-1 in divisional play -- over the previous four seasons. Even in the most challenging of years, they were able to capture the program's 10th consecutive sectional title -- winning the Northwest C championship and outscoring its three playoff opponents, 11-1. But with only two returning starters (the other nine, plus one senior reserve, are all playing in college) this figures to be a bit of a rebuilding campaign, though this team is plenty talented, but very young. In several cases, some of the listed newcomers most likely would have seen some varsity time in 2020, if not for the pandemic, and it will be exciting to see how they progress. Summitt, a star forward who is headed to Ball State to join Wyckoff, ranked third in the HWS area in scoring last season in a bounce-back campaign, while Dvorsky (College of New Jersey commit) is one of the best defensive players in the state. Grooming some complements to Summitt on offense (50 of the team's 73 goals last season lost to graduation) will be critical to any success, while White and Kozelnik have been battling it out in camp to assume the crucial starting role in the cage. Interestingly, there are no usual independent games against state powers and one tentative date against Voorhees (if neither reaches the HWS final on Oct. 16, which seems a big reach) on the schedule. It might be a work in progress to start the season, but expect this group to be a much more cohesive unit and challenging for postseason titles in November.

2021 Field hockey preview: Sussex

High Point Wildcats

Coach: Kelly Reynolds (fourth season, 15-29-2).

2020 record: 2-8-1, 1-6-1 (fifth place NJAC White North Division).

Key returnees: F Ali Stoner (3 goals, 3 assists), sr.; D-MF Donna Merkel, sr.; F Audrey Flannery (5 goals), sr.; GK Cassandra Conklin (109 saves), sr.; MF Dominique Thiessen (injured in 2020), sr.; D Hope Margarum, sr.; F Jenna Brinck (3 assists), jr.; MF-D Brianna Post, jr.; MF Kayle Langenbach, sr.; MF-D Hanna Gardner, so.

Key loss: D Rachel King.

Top newcomer: D Averie Dunn, jr.

Outlook: The Wildcats, who are eyeing the program's first winning season since 2017, are coming off a tough pandemic-shortened season, falling 2-0 to Jefferson in the Northwest D playoffs, a team they had beaten -- 2-1 in the regular season. The 'Cats were once again no strangers to close games last season -- playing in eight that were decided by two or fewer goals after playing in 12 decided by one goal or fewer in '19 campaign. Offense, as was the case the previous three seasons, will be the biggest question as the unit totaled 10 goals in 11 games last year. Stoner and Flannery will lead that group, combining for 19 over the previous two seasons. But others will have to pick up the slack as the defense appears to be in good shape with Conklin, a tri-captain, back in the cage. Playing in a very competitive division, and lacking turf on their home field, puts the 'Cats, at a disadvantage. But if the offense can deliver with consistency, getting above the .500 mark is a realistic goal.

Kittatinny Cougars

Coach: Emily Wisneski (fourth season, 9-40-2).

2020 record: 3-9, 2-5 (fourth place NJAC White North Division).

Key returnees: F Rachel Loevlie (2 goals), sr.; MF Delaney Campanella (3 assists), sr.; D Brooke Van Gorden, sr.; D Ashley Smith, jr.; MF Meagan Ward, sr.; MF Isabelle Hennett, sr.

Key losses: MF Madisen Dippel (4 goals); GK Emily Hotz; D Katie Schreiber; F-MF Allie Molfetto; F Jordyn Librizzi.

Top newcomers: F Dani Sharry, sr.; MF Katie Hlywa, jr. ; MF Alexa Shotwell, jr.; MF Laney Keates, so.; D Gia Checo-Gonzalez, jr.; GK Abby Albert, so.; GK Sarah Van Kirk, so.

Outlook: The Cougars went 21-82-5 over the previous six seasons -- and haven't won more than four games in a year since finishing 8-9-1 in 2015 -- following a 15-win campaign and reaching a sectional final in '14. Lack of offense has been the main issue, as the unit scored just 10 goals in 12 games in 2020. That again is an area of concern and the defense will need to get up to speed quickly with an inexperienced goalkeeper. This is another program hampered by having to play home games on grass, but the offense should produce a few more goals with Loevlie and Campanella leading the way.

Lenape Valley Patriots

Coach: Isabelle Becker (second season, 9-2-2).

2020 record: 9-2-2, 5-0-1 (first place NJAC White South Division).

Key returnees: F Angie Falleni (8 goals), sr.; MF Dara Pellinger, sr.; MF Quinn Dachisen, sr.; MF-D Ella Gomez, so.; MF Emma McElroy, jr.; D Brooke Proctor, sr.; F Mia Vergano (3 goals), so.; F Ashley Marie Daley, jr.; GK Abby Coppolella (8 shutouts), so.

Key losses: F Julianna Gentilucci (10 goals, 7 assists); D Tara Charrette.

Top newcomers: MF-D Lindsay Fehir, so.; F Natalie Crispino, so.; GK Erin Sullivan, so.

Outlook: Patriots are coming off a nice bounce-back season after finishing 6-11-1 in 2019 -- going 1-1 in the postseason, including a 2-0 loss in the Northwest A semifinals to eventual champion Pequannock, and winning a division title. The loss of Gentilucci, who ranked second in the county in goals scored last year, is big, but Falleni should help pick up the slack, along with Gomez and a solid midfield. The defense should also be in good shape with Coppolella back in the cage after a strong freshman campaign. The pieces are in place for another winning season and perhaps a longer run in the postseason.

Newton Braves

Coach: Lisa Bechtel (32nd season, 442-159-19).

2020 record: 7-4, 4-3 (second place NJAC White North Division).
15-4, 7-1 (T-first place NJAC Freedom Division).

Key returnees: F Julia Fitt (3 assists), sr.; MF Bridget Kerrick (4 goals), sr.; MF Sidney Pavlishin (5 goals, 10 assists), sr.; F Julia Decker (4 goals), sr.; D Madison Freda, sr.;  GK Erin McLean, sr.; D Abby Nicholas, sr.; MF Syd Cotter, sr.; D Syd Harding, sr.; MF Rose Steinberg, sr.; D Sam Wechtler, sr.; MF-F Gianna Carchia, jr.; F Ally Neill, jr.; F-MF Rylie Corby, jr.

Key losses: F Elissar Abou-Jaoude (6 goals, 5 assists); MF Sammie DeIorio (3 assists); MF Naya Pereira.

Top newcomers: MF Reagan Decker, jr.; D Ayesha Payne-Parris, jr.; MF Gianna Simeone, so.; F Cece Strasser, so.

Outlook: Braves are coming off back-to-back semifinal losses in the postseason, falling, 2-0, to Belvidere in the Northwest A regionals in 2020. Winning a sixth sectional title in eight seasons is the primary goal behind what should be a very opportunistic offense -- led by Fitt (12 goals over the past two seasons) and Pavlishin, one of the area's top all-around players, who will anchor the midfield with Kerrick. The defense also has experience with Freda and McLean, who filled some big shoes a year ago with three shutouts in her first varsity season as a starter in the cage. Bechtel's teams are always well coached so expect the Braves to be the team to beat in the division and make another sectional title run.

Pope John Lions

Coach: Brett Douglas (second season, 1-9).

2020 record: 1-9, 1-9 (sixth place NJAC Red North Division).
1-14, 0-8 (fifth place NJAC National Division).

Key returnees: MF Madison McGuire, sr.; F Ava Vozza, sr.; D Maika Batchelor, sr.; MF Ryleigh Manning, jr.; F Kaitlin Brennan, so.; F Kira Conn, jr.; F Sabrina Dispenziere, so.; D Carolina Gonzalez-Konezny, sr.; D Saraya Hubble, sr.; F Danielle Kelly, jr.; D Juliana Riccardi, sr.; MF Kylie Squier, jr.; D Melanie Waitze, sr.; MF Rachel Walker, jr.

Key losses: MF Josephine Buccino; GK Emily Glory.

Top newcomers: D Rebecca Walker, fr.; F Katie Klebez, fr.; GK Trisha Kelly, fr.; F Meredith Severinson, fr.; F Madison Grano, so.; D Seraphine Lam, so.

Outlook: Lions are coming off back-to-back one-win seasons and are 13-79-4 since the program's last winning season (10-9-1 in 2014). After scoring just two goals (2-1 win over Morris Hills) in all of 2020, being able to put the ball in the cage is priority one. Manning is the only player on the roster who has scored a varsity goal and McGuire is the only other returning player with offensive stats (two assists in 2019). On defense, providing assistance for a new goalkeeper will be the biggest challenge as the unit yielded 47 goals in 10 games a year ago. Expect this group to struggle against the better teams on the schedule, but with 20 players, the numbers are up and that's an encouraging sign.

Sparta Spartans

Coach: Corinne Bright (third season, 14-17-1).

2020 record: 5-7, 5-6 (fourth place NJAC Red North Division).

Key returnees: F Casey Coleman (8 goals), sr.; F Kate Ryan (3 goals), sr.; F-MF Sophia Candeloro (4 goals), so.; D Madison Campisi, so; F Julianne Ames, sr.; MF Lucy Partin, sr.; MF Allison Hollywood, sr.; MF Rachel Leitner, sr.; MF-D Norah Monaghan, sr.; D Sofia DiStefano, sr.; D Cristina Francescutto, sr.; D Aine Byrne, jr.; MF Emily Abbate, sr.

Key losses: F Kayla Collinson (8 goals); MF Maya Tomko; D Grace Russo; GK Morgan Denmead (5 shutouts).

Top newcomers: D Tzuriya Thompson, jr.; F-MF Claire Gallagher, so.; GK Orianna Bennett, so.

Outlook: As expected, the Spartans took a bit of a step back last season following back-to-back nine-win campaigns. Replacing Collinson, who led the team in scoring the past two years, won't be an easy task, but the team's strength should be on the offensive end with Coleman and Candeloro anchoring the group. Defensively, it's a little more challenging with the loss of Denmead, now playing at Kutztown University, who logged 11 shutouts the previous two seasons. Keeping the tougher teams on the schedule at bay has been an issue in recent year so that will be key to improving on last year's win total.

Vernon Vikings

Coach: Kieran Killeen (sixth season, 52-32-5).

2020 record: 13-1, 7-0 (first place NJAC White North Division).

Key returnees: F Julia Gregory (8 goals, 4 assists), sr.; F Natalie Hasert (4 goals, 4 assists), sr.; MF Megan Westdyke, sr.; MF Sidney Van Tassel (8 assists), so.; D Lauren Waschek, jr.; F Zoe Burns, sr.; GK Caitlin Witters (8 shutouts), sr.; D Noel DeBonta, sr.

Key losses: F Alyssa Van Dalinda (Sussex County-best 17 goals, 3 assists); MF Alicia Mihalko (5 goals); MF Madison Hordych (4 assists); D Aleah Germinario; D Rebecca Bogdewicz (5 assists); D Anna Casper; D Madison Gary.
Vernon celebrates its division title in 2020.

Top newcomers: MF Bailey Mann, so.; D Grace Tavares, so.; MF Makenna Thomas, so.; F Abigail DeYoung, fr.

Outlook
: Vikings, who went just 53-74-5 from 2009-15, have gone 52-32-5 since, including 29-4 over the previous two seasons. They also repeated as division champions after capturing the program's first title in 23 years in 2019, in which they also made a sectional title game appearance for the first time since 2010. Last year's run also ended in a final -- a 3-1 loss to Morristown-Beard in the Northwest B championship game. Despite significant graduation losses on both sides of the field, the talent is there for another run. Gregory, who scored 18 goals as a sophomore, will be counted on to lead the offense, which should be a strength, along with Van Tassel and Hasert. Defensively, the loss of almost the entire starting backfield may be an issue, but Witters was solid in her first season as a starter in the cage. Last year's group yielded just eight goals, including three in the final game.

Wallkill Valley Rangers

Coach: Irene Chernati (36th season, 419-243-18).

2020 record: 5-5-2, 3-3-1 (third place NJAC White North Division).

Key returnees: F Sarina Sanders (5 goals, 3 assists), so.; MF Saige Slater, sr.; MF Julie Murphy, sr.; MF Gianna Sienkiewicz (5 goals), sr.; D Natalie Armstrong, sr.; MF Sarah Philback, jr.; F Jennifer Roth, jr.; F Kellie Roth (3 goals, 4 assists), jr.; GK Samantha Fried (4 shutouts), sr.; F Joy Oostdyk, so.

Key losses: MF Emily Mizeski (5 goals, 4 assists); D Stephanie Hutnick.

Outlook: Rangers are coming off six-win seasons in 2018 and '19, followed by a five-win campaign in 2020 after capturing a division title and the program's first sectional championship since 2006 in '17. This could be the year to get over .500. Offensively, it's been a struggle the previous two seasons as the unit totaled 20 goals a year ago, but half of those came in wins against Kittatinny and North Warren, and no more than three in any other matchup. Wallkill was shut out four times, including a 2-0 loss to Lenape Valley in the Northwest A playoffs. Sanders is coming off a solid rookie season, while Slater and Philback anchor a good midfield group. The defense was a strength in 2020 and Fried did just fine as a first-year starter in the cage. If the offense comes along, look for this group to take a big leap forward.

Wrestling: Flynn will guide P'burg middle school

One of the biggest questions surrounding the coaching transition at Phillipsburg High School has been answered -- with a familiar face coming back to guide the middle school program.

Former Stateliner wrestler and North Hunterdon coach Tim Flynn is taking over the seventh-eighth grade duties, succeeding Tim Longacre, who is now an assistant on Brad Gentzle's staff at the high school level.

Flynn was not immediately available for comment.

Tim Flynn, right, is recognized by the program in 2018.
"He's on board and ready to go," Longacre said on Thursday afternoon following the program's annual golf outing. "I couldn't ask for anybody better. We talk about keeping the cohesion together [with the high school coaches]. It's awesome.

"It's an extremely important spot to be in for our town, as far as development."

Flynn, 44, who previously spent 35 years in the sport as a wrestler and coach, stepped down at North Hunterdon after serving as its head coach for eight seasons when he was appointed as the school's vice principal in 2017, a position he still maintains.

"It's what I have wanted to do eventually, the last year or two for sure," Flynn said at that time of taking an administration role shortly after being approved to coach the Lions for the 2017-18 season.

North Hunterdon went 17-6 in the final season under Flynn, whose teams went 118-48 overall, while capturing the North 2, Group 5 title in 2015, the school's 14th sectional championship before winning No. 15 -- the North 2, Group title -- under Chris Hrunka (pictured above with Flynn) in 2020.

Before taking over in 2009-10, Flynn served as former head coach Jason Hawk's top assistant for four seasons. Under their guidance, along with several other highly regarded assistants, North Hunterdon earned statewide respect from opponents and coaches.

Flynn, a former state placewinner for P'burg under coach Rick Thompson (fifth-sixth at 130 pounds in 1994) and a four-year letterwinner at James Madison, enjoyed many memorable moments with North Hunterdon, including winning the Group 3 title in 2002, the school's fourth and last championship.

Individually, Flynn pointed to coaching two-time state champion Ricky Frondorf, now a youth coach for North, and three-time state placewinner Ryan Pomrinca, the Lions' all-time wins leader (155-13 from 2011-15) and NCAA Tournament qualifier for Lehigh University as career highlights.

"We had some stud teams my first couple of years as an assistant," Flynn said in 2017. "The 2003 team was probably better than '02, but we got beat in the [Group 3 final]. All four Hunterdon County schools winning [sectional titles] in 2015, that was fun."

Flynn still lives in the P'burg sending district with his wife Brooke and their two children, Jack (11) and Lindsey (8). Jack, who is in fifth grade, is a youth wrestler for Lopatcong.

Field hockey: Roncoroni returns to coach Vikes

It's all part of the plan for former Voorhees star Kathryn Roncoroni, who was named the ninth head coach in program history at the end of the 2020-21 school year.

The Vikings' all-time leading scorer has come home after several years of college and coaching abroad. Roncoroni, who played collegiately at American University and West Chester, where she helped the Golden Rams capture a Division II national title in 2019, takes over for Shannon Hughes.

Hughes, a former star at South Plainfield, led the program to a 47-13-1 mark, two Skyland Conference division titles (2018 and '20) and the Central West A championship in 2020 over the past three seasons.

"We kept it pretty quiet. I only talked to my family about it," Roncoroni said of the hiring process. "Since I was younger, I wanted to be a field hockey coach. That was always the plan when I graduated college."

Roncoroni scored 140 career goals for the Vikes.
Roncoroni, 22, inherits a program that has been regarded as a New Jersey state power since the early 1990s -- then guided by Ann Bonavita, who remains the winningest coach in program history with a mark of 202-29-8 from 1992-2002. But there is some work to be done on the youth level to get the Vikes back to challenging for a Group 2 state championship with the likes of West Essex and Rumson-Fair Haven.

Roncoroni, who is holding down three jobs as she searches for a full-time teaching position in either art or elementary education, previously coached at the Swansea Hockey Club in Wales, along with former Warren Hills star and West Chester teammate, Katie Thompson, who scored the decisive goal in the 2-1 win over Saint Anselm in the 2019 Division II title game. Roncoroni assisted on the Rams' other goal.

"With COVID and everything, I came home early from the U.K," Roncoroni said. "This was the perfect opportunity to get practicing as a coach."

Voorhees provides Roncoroni the perfect opportunity to lead a bigtime high school program, which now has two successful alumni at the helm. Junior varsity coach Angie (D'Armiento) Emmert was a senior on the Vikes' Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament championship team in 2012.

"I haven't been back in a long time," Roncoroni said. "Now working with Coach E and playing with her in high school, it's come full circle."

In her final high school game, Roncoroni scored both of Voorhees' goals in a 3-2 loss to Madison in the 2015 North 2, Group 2 sectional final. She finished that season with a school record 51 goals to go with 14 assists.

Roncoroni claimed all but one offensive record in Voorhees' fine field hockey history -- owning single-season records for goals (51) and points (116), along with career marks for goals (140) and points (319). Former coach Taylor Webb still owns the Vikes' record for career assists (58 from 1999-02).

Webb, who guided Voorhees to an overall mark of 112-31-4 in seven seasons from 2011-17, and was a star midfielder for the Vikes before going to play at Iowa and Rider, is pleased that one of her former players is now in charge.

"I think she will do a great job," Webb said of Roncoroni, a proven winner as a player.

Voorhees went 14-1-1 in '20 and has 682 wins.
Voorhees will be a very young team this coming season, which begins with official practices starting on Aug. 16. Leading the way will be senior midfielder/back and Montclair State recruit Sadie Eichlin, who is coming off a stellar junior season. Eichlin, one of the top players in the HWS area and a defensive stalwart, scored nine goals to go with 13 assists after shifting to the center midfield spot in 2020.

One thing that has changed since Roncoroni's high school days is that North Hunterdon will be the team to beat in Hunterdon County. The Lions are loaded and coming off an 11-3 campaign in which they snapped the program's 41-game drought -- spanning 30 years -- against the Vikes with a 3-0 win on Nov. 2.

New North leader

Speaking of North Hunterdon, Geoff Chrisman takes over the head coaching duties after serving as an assistant under former coach Maria Bachert, who guided the Lions to a 32-42 mark in four seasons and the program's first winning season in 10 years in 2020. That year culminated with North's first sectional title game appearance since 1993 -- a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Hunterdon Central in North 2, Group 4.

Last season, North went 11-3 and was ousted by Ridge -- 2-1 in double overtime in the Central West B semifinals -- after splitting the regular season series with the Red Devils. That loss will be a driving force for the Lions in 2021.

"I'm really excited to be working with the program and a phenomenal group of kids," said Chrisman, who also has 16 years of coaching experience in lacrosse. "They were really disappointed with how they finished last year and we have the whole team back."

Leading the way will be the speedy 1-2 punch of junior Lauren Masters and senior Ryan Anderson, who combined for 82 goals and 66 assists over the previous two seasons.

Masters, the program's all-time points leader who led all HWS scorers with 26 goals and 59 points in 2020, has 56 career goals and is two shy of owning the program's all-time mark -- currently held by Beth Gromlowicz (57 from 1983-86), one of the school's greatest athletes.

Anderson, who logged an area-best 26 assists in 2019 and 18 in '20, is North's career leader with 50.

"They are elite athletes with the things they do," Chrisman said. "They are a pretty fast set of forwards. With [senior] Olivia Reeder [10 goals, 11 assists in 2020] that's a pretty good group."

Flick-ins

There are a total of five new coaches in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex area for the 2021 season.

Michelle (Ryan) Smith takes over at South Hunterdon for Stephanie Davis-Hart, who guided the Eagles to an overall mark of 72-48-3 over the previous seven seasons. South's season ended with a 4-0 loss to Voorhees in the 2020 Central West A semifinals.

At North Warren, Carie Murphy replaces Brian Gravatt, whose teams went 24-71-6 over the previous six seasons. The Patriots went 0-7 last year and scored a total of two goals in a pandemic-shortened campaign.

Former assistant Tiffany Kuhl is now in charge at Delaware Valley, which went 94-79-7 under Stephanie Rifflard the previous 10 seasons and reached the North 2, Group 2 semifinals in 2017.

Warren Hills, coming off a 14-0 season and winning the Northwest C championship, was hit hard by graduation as the program lost 11 seniors (nine starters). The Blue Streaks will be young, but plenty talented as seniors Maddie Summitt (forward) and Emily Dvorsky (back) are among the top area players. Summitt led the team with 18 goals in 2020.

Hills won at least 20 games nine of the last 12 seasons.

Coach Josie Potter's team, which will look to extend the program's streak of nine straight sectional championships and 10 consecutive finals appearances, also has its sights on a Group 3 state title, something that has eluded the Streaks since going back-to-back for the school's only state championships in 2014-15.

Hills starts that march with a scrimmage against state powerhouse Oak Knoll at home on Aug. 24 at 4 p.m. The Streaks open the regular season at Hackettstown on Thursday, Sept. 9 -- their only non-conference game on the regular-season schedule. Other key dates include: Bridgewater-Raritan at home on Sept. 18; North Hunterdon at home on Sept. 30; at Hunterdon Central on Oct. 5; Voorhees at home on Oct. 16.
