Group 4
Phillipsburg vs. West Orange
Wrestlers to watch: P, Jr. Zach Fisher (23-9), 113; Fr. Jim Schuitema (21-8), 132; Sr. V.J. Delmonico (21-10, D3); Sr. Joe Moyer (15-14, D1), 160; Sr. Brandon Hull (26-3, D1, R2, S8), 220; Sr. Anthony Pare (25-4, D2), 285; WO, Sr. Desalegne Fried (30-1, D2, R4), 138; Sr. Nigel Brown (14-10, D3), 145; Sr. Jimmy Myers (15-7, D3), 160; Sr. Steven Benitiz (23-7), 170; Sr. Anthony Angelone (25-4), 220-285; Jr. Nathanael Louis (24-7), 220-285.
Group titles: Phillipsburg 16 (Group
3) — 1983, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, 2003, 2004, 2009. (Group 4) — 1986,
1987, 1988, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000. West Orange 0 (won first sectional title in 2012). Brick Memorial 7 (1986, '88, '94, '98, '99, '08, '09). Southern 1 (2005).
Breakdown: This one should not be close as P'burg gears up for the championship round. I see the Stateliners, who beat West Orange, 48-15, for last year's North 1 sectional title, winning 12 of 14 bouts and don't expect coach Dave Post to forfeit out once the match is out of reach. I'd favor West Orange at 138 and possibly 170, and maybe the Essex County school bumps at 138 and 145 to try and get another win. It won't matter, as the 'Liners go for their 17th state title against Brick Memorial. The Mustangs win a tight one against Southern, which matches up slightly better against P'burg. That should be a great semifinal on the adjacent mat between those Shore rivals. P'burg needs 120 and 132 in that potential match with Brick, while 138-182 could all be tight bouts against Southern. That match will feature very few bonus points, but P'burg has the chance for some at 113 and 120 and that could be huge.
Prediction: Phillipsburg, 50-6. (P'burg over Brick, 27-24 or P'burg over Southern, 24-23).

Group 2
High Point vs. Raritan
Wrestlers to watch: R, Fr. Dylan Seidenberg (18-6), 106; Sr. Matthew Lindo (22-3, D2), 113; Jr. Anthony Scarcella (14-8, D3), 120; Sr. Nick Liguori (15-3, D1, R3, S4), 126; Jr. Vincent Masi (9-4, D2), 126; Jr. Jason Bohal (16-3, D2, R4), 132; Sr. Devin Holmes (15-9), 138; So. Kyle Lynch (18-7), 152; Sr. Victor Iannello (16-9), 195; Sr. Nick Rice (17-8), 220;
Group titles: High Point 2 (2008, 11). Raritan 0. Delsea 1 (1991). Brearley-Dayton 1 (2011).
Breakdown: These teams just met on Jan. 28, with Raritan earning a 33-31 victory in a tri-meet that included Brearley-Dayton -- a 36-34 winner over High Point -- which is in the other semifinal against Delsea. Wildcats were without senior 138-pounder Alec Alvino and sophomore Chris Auer suffered a neck injury that forced him to default his match against Liguori. This time, High Point will be without the services of senior 138-pounder Jason Snider (personal), who scored a 13-4 major in that loss. Four bouts were decided by two points or less with High Point winning three of those close ones. Without Snider, 'Cats will have to do some juggling in order to make up the difference. Last time, coach John Gardner bumped the lineup by putting Snider at 145. I think High Point gets one of the close ones it didn't get the last time, perhaps 113, and one another it's not expecting to advance to a third straight final -- after back-to-back trips in Group 3 -- where Delsea awaits. Brearley-Dayton is making its sixth straight trip to the Group championships.
Prediction: High Point, 28-25. (High Point over Delsea, 35-29).

Group 1
Kittatinny vs. Bound Brook
Wrestlers to watch: K, Sr. James Elphick (11-1, D4-Pa.), 113; Fr. Tom Murphy (16-14), 132; So. Nick Romyns (22-7, D2), 138; Sr. Clarke Moynihan (26-3, D2, R2), 152; So. Kieran Gerrity (22-7, D3), 160; So. Dylan Wunder (24-5), 182-195; BB, Fr. Craig De La Cruz (29-3), 106; Jr. Robert Murray (25-7, D1, R3), 113; So. Jeison Arias (23-6, D2, R2), 132; Jr. Emmanuel Soto (18-8, D2), 145; So. Isaiah Soto (22-6, D2), 160; So. Ronald Picado (27-5, D4), 182.
Group titles: Kittatinny 8 (Group 2) -- 1996, '01, '02, '03, '04, '05, '06. (Group 1) -- '08. Bound Brook 0. Paulsboro 28 (1983, '84, '85, '86, '87, '88, '89, '90, '91, '92, '93, '94, '95, '96, '97, '98, '99, '00, '01, '02, '03, '04, '05, '06, '07, '09, '10, '11). Hanover Park 0.
Breakdown: Seems like most have Bound Brook penciled in for its first state championship. The choice school has loaded up on talent and features 10 wrestlers with 20 or more wins. However, don't count out the Cougars, who are hungry for a ninth championship and second in Group 1. Kittatinny can pull this off, but needs the flip in order to control the matchups at 132, 138 and 145. Bound Brook is a heavy favorite at 106, 126, 132 (with the bump) has a slight edge at 113, 160, 170 and 182. Kittatinny gets the nod at 138 (with Murphy), 145 (Romyns), 152, 195 (Wunder-Saavedra) and 220. That leaves 120 and 285 as tossups and Kittatinny needs both to win. It's a lot to ask and I think Kittatinny gives a great account in a close loss. Winner should be a heavy favorite in the final against either Paulsboro or Hanover Park.
Prediction: Bound Brook, 32-27.
