Wrestling: Ten Region 1 quarterfinals to watch

Here are the 10 quarterfinal bouts that Open Mike will be keeping a close eye on Friday night at Wallkill Valley Regional High School:

106 pounds

4-Fr. Garrett O'Shea (34-3, D2-2), Morris Knolls, vs. 5-Jr. Austin Sisco (25-7, D3-2), Pope John.
3-Sr. Stephen Caserta (29-6, D2-1), Roxbury, vs. 6-So. William Kui (29-5, D4-1), DePaul.

Note: O'Shea is an impressive-looking freshman who defeated Sisco, 5-2, in the finals of the Parsippany Tournament on Dec. 27. Sisco picked up his second win in his third appearance at regions -- 4-3 over Hopatcong's Joe Aumann on Wednesday. Caserta-Kui is good enough to be a final most years here, but this weight class is stacked.

120 pounds

4-So. Peter Lipari (25-7, D2-1), Lenape Valley, vs. 5-Sr. Joey Spaziani (30-7, D2-3), Hopatcong.

Note: Fourth meeting between these two. Lipari is 3-0 -- winning 5-0, 3-1 in sudden victory and 5-1 in their most recent encounter in the District 2 semifinals. Winner likely gets High Point freshman Jared Kobis in the semifinals for an All-Sussex matchup in the Final Four.

132 pounds

4-So. Mike Derin (13-3, D3-1), High Point, vs. 5-Sr. Anthony Johnson (12-7, D1-1), Phillipsburg.

Note: This is a quarterfinal? Wow. Derin was a third-place finisher last year at 120, while Johnson was a finalist at 138. The High Point sophomore, who left the team earlier this season, has been nothing short of sensational since his return -- sans a 5-2 loss to Roxbury's Jake Legotte, the No. 3 seed here -- in his first match back on Jan. 19. Johnson, who missed most of the first month while serving a suspension, decked the No. 6 seeded Joe Hocking of Wallkill Valley and beat No. 7 Eric Friedman of Mendham, 6-4.

138 pounds

4-So. Jason Gaccione (34-4, D3-2), High Point, vs. 5-Sr. Brandon Carcuffe (31-7, D1-3), West Morris.

Note: Gaccione was one win away from finishing in the top four at 132 last year. You can bet he's refocused after that stunning 11-6 loss to Kittatinny's Nick Romyns in the District 3 finals. Carcuffe has kind of been flying under the radar a bit, finishing third in a loaded District 1 field. He's one of nine West Morris wrestlers still going in Friday's quarterfinals. High Point has a tournament-high 11 still alive.

152 pounds

3-So. Luke Bohn (31-5, D3-1), Jefferson, vs. 6-Fr. Dean Drugac (33-3, D2-2), Morris Knolls.

Note: Bohn won his first District 3 title on Saturday, nearly giving up the tying takedown at the buzzer in a 3-1 win over Vernon's Ryan Ward, the No. 8 seed. Drugac is among some impressive freshmen for the Golden Eagles, including his brother, Luke, at 145.

170 pounds

3-Sr. Richard DiZenzo (26-6, D4-1), West Milford, vs. 6-Jr. Broderick Bupivi (22-12, D1-1), Phillipsburg.

Note: Bupivi has really come on in the second half and looked strong in winning his first District 1 title at Warren Hills. DiZenzo is returning at this weight, where he came within one win of finishing in the top four.

182 pounds

2-So. Nick DePalma (30-5, D4-1), DePaul, vs. 7-Sr. Josh Sibblies (31-4, D3-2), Newton.

Note: This could end up being the best bout of the night. DePalma majored Belvidere's Evan Bray, the No. 3 seed, in December. Sibblies being a No. 7 seed tells you how deep this weight is. He won the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex title, while Bray finished third. They were in opposite brackets.

220 pounds

3-Sr. Robert Levine (21-5, D4-2), Wayne Hills, vs. 6-Jr. Garrett Armstrong (32-3, D3-1), Kittatinny.

Note: Levine finished fourth last year at 220 after being pinned by Belvidere's J.B. Lawson in the consolations. Lawson is the top seed here and has split with Armstrong this season. Since a 3-2 loss to Lawson in overtime in the HWS finals, Armstrong has won 16 in a row -- including 11 pins.

285 pounds

4-Jr. Noa Merritt (28-3, D3-1), Pope John, vs. Sr. William Wenzel (27-3, D4-2), West Milford.

Note: Merritt went 1-2 in his first trip to regions last year, including a 3-1 loss to Belvidere's Ryan Appleby in the first round of wrestlebacks. He used a tremendous drive double-leg takedown in winning the District 3 title. Wenzel survived a scare on Wednesday with a 7-5 win in sudden victory over Phillipsburg's Jarrett Williams.

Wrestling: Region 1 prelims recap, tidbits

Opening night at Region 1 held very little suspense, sans a few entertaining bouts.

The biggest uprising of the night occurred at 160 pounds, where referee Frank Leitner hit Lenape Valley's Joe Labell for stalling at the buzzer to force overtime with Kittatinny's David Popek. LaBell was leading, 1-0 at the time, and wouldn't you know it, Popek got the takedown in sudden victory to advance. The two had split in two previous meetings this season.

Lenape Valley coach Doug Vetter, who tried in vain to get Leitner over to the scorer's table for an explanation at the end of regulation, was absolutely incensed after the bout. A heated exchange with Leitner spilled outside as they exited through one of the gymnasium's side doors. Fans were still buzzing about it well into the next few bouts.

In my opinion, and many others, it was a bad call. I think Leitner is one of the top officials in the area and a heckuva good guy. But I didn't agree with the decision, and we move on.

Here's a look at what else went down on Wednesday at Wallkill Valley:

1. District 1 was the big winner as it advanced 17 of 28 into Friday's semifinal round. Pretty impressive when you consider the rough evenings for both Phillipsburg and Warren Hills -- which went a combined 2-8 on the evening. The Blue Streaks went 0-for-5 -- as Austin Pidoto (106), Kevin Bundschuh (138), Evan Butka (152), Steve Cleaver (182) and Ryan Witner (195) saw their seasons end. All were either decided or slight underdogs in their respective matchups.

Zach Fisher (113) and Jake Kocsis (160) were the lone Stateliners to advance, as Tylor Petchonka (126), Joe Maso (182) and Jarrett Williams (285) all lost first-round matches. Biggest surprise to me was Williams losing to West Milford's Will Wenzel, 9-7, in sudden victory. Williams gave up a five-pointer in the first period, but rallied back as he converted a takedown to tie it with about 1:20 left in the third period. But for some reason, Williams, who scores just about all of his points from the neutral position, never let Wenzel up to try for another takedown.

West Morris carried the D1 flag by advancing all seven of its wrestlers in the prelims -- giving coach Ken Rossi a total of nine in Friday's quarterfinals. John Schade (106), Dylan Luciano (113), David Migliaccio (126), Nick Matthews (138), Brandon Carcuffe (145), John Sickles (160) and Adam Kratch (170) all won their first-round matchups.

District 2 was next with 15 winners, followed by District 3 with 14 and District 4 with 10.

2. High Point had a great first night -- going 6-for-7 -- as Connor McHugh (126), Chris Auer (138), Jason Gaccione (145), Antonio Porraspita (170), Bobby McDonnell (220) and Gunny Wassong (285) all were victorious for the Wildcats, who have a tournament-high 11 quarterfinalists. High Point junior Tommy Hooker dropped a 7-3 decision to Vernon's Ryan Ward at 152.

Auer was deadlocked in a scoreless tie with Wallkill's Jim Lodema through three regulation and three overtime periods, before escaping with 13 seconds left in the ultimate tiebreaker. Lodema won the flip since there were no points in regulation and chose top after riding Auer out in the second 30-second period.

Sussex County rival Kittatinny, which also qualified a tournament-best 12 wrestlers along with High Point, went 3-3 in the first round. Christian Silva (113), Popek and Dylan Wunder (195) all posted victories. Jake VanWingerden (106), Nick Klinger (120) and Tom Smith (285) were the Cougars eliminated from the tournament. Klinger gave a good account in an 8-5 loss to Roxbury state qualifier Devon LaFranco.

3. The seeding process is always a topic of discussion prior to the tournament and here are the numbers from opening night. In all, eight seeded wrestlers fell in the prelims, including No. 4 Zach D'Apolito of Wayne Valley at 170. There were four No. 5s that lost, along with a No. 6, 7 and an 8.

Jefferson's Tyler Zimmerman decked D'Apolito in 2:15, while Williams and Smith were the No. 5 and 7 seeds, respectively, to fall at 285. Newton's Gus Protogeropoulos was the six seed at 195. Sparta's Ian Burke (126) and Lodema were No. 5s that lost.

4. Hackettstown's Tyler Kozimor was the lone returning champion -- there are four others in the tournament -- to compete on Wednesday. Kozimor scored an easy 11-4 win over Pope John's Anthony Gignatelli.

Senior Brandon Rothman also won for the Tigers -- 6-2 over Wayne Hills' Ryan Inglett at 132.

The 145-pound class is among the toughest here, as Gaccione and West Morris Brandon Carcuffe were also involved in preliminary matchups. Gaccione is the No. 4 seed and Carcuffe is No. 5, while Kozimor drew the No. 2 seed.

5. There's actually excitement brewing at heavyweight, as Williams-Wenzel got the crowd going on opening night. I'm anxious to see top seed Andrew Pacheco, a sophomore sensation for Warren Hills, in his Wallkill Valley debut. The "Bear" wrestled a total of 1:58 in three bouts to win his first District 1 title over the weekend.

Belvidere's Ryan Appleby, who is 2-2 all-time against Pacheco, decked Montville's Ethan Fox in 1:34 to advance to the quarters. He was the only County Seater to wrestle on Wednesday, a long wait and drive for the coaching staff for a bout that didn't even go a full period. But, hey, they aren't complaining one bit.

Wrestling: Region 1 preliminaries (LIVE)

Welcome to another exciting year of Region 1 wrestling -- the best one in New Jersey for my money. Wallkill Valley does a great job of hosting this event -- now 30 years here in Sussex County since the event shifted from Phillipsburg High School following the 1982 tournament, then known as Region 4.

Preliminary round action tonight involving district seconds and thirds begins at 5 p.m. Last year, District 4 advanced the most on opening night for the first time in recent memory. Of course, all of our Open Mike area wrestlers from Districts 1, 2 and 3 will be competing. They are in bold below for those following the locals. We'll be live starting around 4:45, so check back and refresh often for all of the results and notes on some of the more intriguing matchups.

We're up and running here in lovely Hardyston Township, not Hamburg as other outlets are reporting.

One change at 152 -- Lenape Valley's Dominic LaBell is out. Morris Knolls' Dean Drugac receives a bye into Friday's quarterfinals. At 160, Butler's Travis Canty is out and there is no replacement.

Wrestlers are clearing the mats and we're going to get underway.

106 pounds

 Jr. John Schade (21-11, D1-2), West Morris, d. 8-So. Dino Cancelleri (18-16, D4-3), Wayne Valley, 4-2.
5-Jr. Austin Sisco (25-7, D3-2), Pope John, d. So. Joe Aumann (27-10, D2-3), Hopatcong, 4-3.
4-Fr. Garrett O'Shea (34-3, D2-2), Morris Knolls, p. So. Austin Pidoto (20-14, D1-3), Warren Hills, 2:51.
7-So. Dan Kee (29-6, D4-2), Lakeland, p. Fr. Jake VanWingerden (23-13, D3-3), Kittatinny, 2:41.

Note: Getting a chance to see a very good freshman, O'Shea, right in front of press row. O'Shea gets the opening takedown and tilts for two backs, he's up early, 4-0. Two more with the crosswrist tilt, 6-0, after one period. Arm bar for the FALL! So we already have one seed out, as the No. 8 falls here.

113 pounds

5-Sr. Zach Fisher (27-8, D1-2), Phillipsburg, md. Jr. Zeke Lewie-Cepero (10-8, D3-3), Pope John, 13-1.
4-So. Dylan Luciano (20-14, D1-3), West Morris, p. So. Kyle Flynn (22-14, D4-2), Pompton Lakes, 2:35.
6-Jr. Christian Silva (27-9, D3-2), Kittatinny, p. Fr. Troy Stanich (19-9, D2-3), Roxbury, 4:27.
7-So. Michael Glasser (26-11, D2-2), Montville, p. Sr. Dylan Pohl (19-7, D4-3), Lakeland, 4:55.

Note: Fisher with the quick takedown. Fisher, a district champ last year, sustained an unfortunate hand injury prior to this tournament last year. He would've had a good shot at earning a trip to AC. Fisher up 4-0 in the second period. Fisher gets another turn and leads 6-0 after two. He quickly reverses to start the third. Nice double-arm bar turn to end a 13-1 win for Fisher. Silva leads, 6-1, after two periods.

120 pounds

8-Sr. Vince Pallone (20-16, D1-3), Mendham, d. Jr. Lou Carusillo (24-11, D4-2), DePaul, 4-2.
5-Sr. Joey Spaziani (30-7, D2-3), Hopatcong, p. Jr. Matt Tripodi (21-14, D3-2), Jefferson, 3:13.
6-Jr. Matt Ritchie (28-6, D1-2), North Warren, d. So. Tim Mickens (16-16, D4-3), West Milford, 4-2.
7-Jr. Devon LaFranco (25-12, D2-2), Roxbury, d. Fr. Nick Klinger (15-20, D3-3), Kittatinny, 8-5.

Note: Good one here between Spaziani and Tripodi. Spaziani, who is looking to avenge a 3-2 loss on Dec. 22, gets the opening takedown and leads, 2-0, after one period. Another takedown after an escape, Spaziani in control with a 5-0 lead midway through the second. Wow, nearside cradle for the FALL! Ritchie making his return after qualifying in 2011. He finished fourth in the district last year. Ritchie gets the first takedown for a 2-0 lead. Ritchie leads, 4-1, after two, and starts on top in the third. Escape for Mickens, 4-2, with 25 seconds to go. Ritchie advances with a workmanlike effort.

Good battle between LaFranco and Klinger, as LaFranco leads, 5-4, in the third. Klinger is going to be real good down the road.

126 pounds

8-Sr. Connor McHugh (26-10, D3-3), High Point, p. So. Craig Calderone (23-10, D4-2), Pompton Lakes, 2:19.
So. David Zeppetelli (23-12, D4-3), West Milford, d. 5-So. Ian Burke (30-6, D3-2), Sparta, 7-3.
3-So. David Migliaccio (26-10, D1-2), West Morris, d. Jr. Tylor Petchonka (9-12, D1-3), Phillipsburg, 8-4.
6-So. Anthony Fano (30-8, D2-2), Montville, md. So. Michael Nigro (21-16, D2-3), Morris Knolls, 10-2.

Note: McHugh so good with that crossarm gets the FALL in a scoreless match. Petchonka has done a nice job since getting into the lineup after Corey Zinsmeister went down with an injury. He's scoreless in the second with Migliaccio, who won by fall in their D1 semifinal. Migliaccio with the takedown and an escape for Petchonka, 2-1, in the second. Petchonka gets a takedown with 15 seconds left to take a 3-2 lead, but Migliaccio gets an escape at buzzer. It's 3-3 in the third. Wow, upset brewing here. Petchonka out early in the third, 4-3. Migliaccio hits a dump and settles into a turk for five -- he leads 8-4 late in the period. Those big moves are killers at this level.

Burke goes down in the first round, my pick for third. Something just wasn't right with him the last few weeks. He's tough, finished third at Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex.

132 pounds

8-Sr. Brandon Rothman (31-8, D1-3), Hackettstown, d. Sr. Ryan Inglett (22-10, D4-2), Wayne Hills, 6-2.
3-Jr. Jake Legotte (32-5, D2-2), Roxbury, d. Sr. Cassius Russell (8-4, D2-3), Morris Knolls, 7-2.
6-Sr. Joe Hocking (25-5, D3-2), Wallkill Valley, d. Fr. Spencer Carey (27-7, D4-3), DePaul, 13-9.
7-So. Eric Friedman (30-7, D1-2), Mendham, d. Fr. Tim VanLenten (17-9, D3-3), Vernon, 8-3.

Note: Rothman cruised in his opener. Hocking is up 3-2 in the second period. Good crowd here tonight, but this place used to be rocking when a Wallkill wrestler was in action. I remember back in the 80s when they used to go crazy for Clinton Ish and Steve Line. It's 30 years here for this tournament. Carey held a 7-5 lead in the third, but Hocking gets a takedown and three backs late to win it.

138 pounds

1-Sr. Nick Matthews (35-3, D1-2), West Morris, d. Fr. Tommy Miller (17-15, D2-3), Roxbury, 7-4.
8-Jr. Vincent Rigoglioso (19-8, D4-3), Wayne Valley, d. So. Cory Doebel (10-7, D4-2), DePaul, 3-2 OT3 (rideout).
Jr. Chris Auer (16-10, D3-3), High Point, d. 5-Sr. Jim Lodema (21-7, D3-2), Wallkill Valley, 1-0 UTB.
6-Sr. Adam Fano (28-10, D2-2), Montville, d. Sr. Kevin Bundschuh (18-11, D1-3), Warren Hills, 5-4.

Note: Matthews looking to rebound from a crushing loss in the D1 finals. He led, 4-1, in the second when he got chin-whipped and decked by P'burg's Max Elling. Matthews up here, 4-0, in the second period. Auer and Lodema in a scoreless battle in the second. It was a good one between those two in the D3 semis, as Lodema pulled out a 3-1 win. Four minutes, here, no score. Auer caught in a spladle, but no backs, under one minute to go. Lodema riding, trying to tilt. We're going OT -- first ones of the night, as Rigoglioso and Doeble are in OT. No takedowns for Auer or Lodema. Now we go 30-second rideouts. Auer rides out Lodema for the first 30. Now Auer on bottom. Still no score. Flip for the choice in ultimate goes to Lodema and he takes top. Auer escapes with 13 seconds left to win it!

145 pounds

5-Sr. Brandon Carcuffe (31-7, D1-3), West Morris, d. So. Zack Tareky (15-15, D4-2), Wayne Valley, 6-0.
4-So. Jason Gaccione (34-4, D3-2), High Point, md. Jr. Dylan Kaine (21-10, D4-3), West Milford, 12-4.
7-Fr. Luke Drugac (26-10, D2-2), Morris Knolls, d. Jr. Jonathan Patane (23-11, D2-3), Roxbury, 5-2.
2-Sr. Tyler Kozimor (28-6, D1-2), Hackettstown, d. Sr. Anthony Gignatelli (19-13, D3-3), Pope John, 11-4.

Note: We're at the halfway point. Heading into 145, D1 has advanced nine in this round, D2 with seven, D3 with five and D4 with three. You know this is a tough weight when Carcuffe, Gaccione and Kozimor are all in action in the first round. Kozimor won a loaded 138-pound class last year. Gaccione up 8-2 in the second period. Gaccione stretches his lead to 12-4 in the third, he's cruising. Drugac and Patane in a tight one -- Drugac leads, 3-2, in the second period. Takedown for Drugac at the buzzer, he leads, 5-2, after two periods. Kozimor cruising, up, 9-1, in the second and nearly had Gignatelli decked. Drugac advances.

152 pounds

8-Sr. Ryan Ward (24-3, D3-2), Vernon, d. Jr. Tommy Hooker (23-12, D3-3), High Point, 7-3.
4-Fr. Daniel Kilroy (24-6, D4-2), Wayne Hills, d. Jr. Johnny Hayes (17-11, D1-3), North Warren, 12-5.
6-Fr. Dean Drugac (33-3, D2-2), Morris Knolls, bye.
7-Sr. Sal Castiglia (29-9, D4-3), Wayne Valley, d. Jr. Evan Butka (21-15, D1-2), Warren Hills, 4-2.

Note: Good one here with Hooker and Ward. Ward with the opening takedown, he leads, 2-1 late first. Ward advances, nice win for him -- his 77th overall. Butka trailing, 4-1, in the second period.

160 pounds

8-Sr. David Popek (15-13, D3-2), Kittatinny, d. So. Joe LaBell (21-17, D2-3), Lenape Valley, 3-1 SV.
5-Sr. John Sickles (27-8, D1-3), West Morris, d. Jr. Corey Flynn (25-6, D4-2), Pompton Lakes, 7-3.
3-Jr. Jake Kocsis (25-9, D1-2), Phillipsburg, p. Fr. Al Falco (16-17, D3-3), Sparta, 2:32.
6-Jr. Steve Acevedo (25-6, D2-2), Morris Hills, d. So. Brett Lobdell (16-22, D4-4), Pequannock, 12-6.

Note: Popek-LaBell III here. LaBell won 6-3, on Dec. 19, while Popek won the rematch, 3-2, on Feb. 15 in the North 1, Group 1 sectional final. Lobdell enters here as Butler's Travis Canty was scratched. He was Butler's lone qualifier. LaBell up, 1-0, in the second, they're on their feet. Popek on bottom in the third, still 1-0. Wow, referee Frank Leitner warned LaBell for a stall at the buzzer to sent it to OT and Popek gets the takedown in OT -- unreal. Lenape Valley coach Doug Vetter is steaming mad and is all over Leitner. I think they both went outside. Leitner came back in but I don't see Vetter. That was crazy. I didn't think it was a good call, wasn't stalling.

170 pounds

8-Jr. Antonio Porraspita (23-10, D3-2), High Point, d. Jr. Anthony Colabella (29-8, D1-3), Mount Olive, 9-3.
So. D.J. Barrett (23-14, D2-2), Lenape Valley, md5-Sr. Matt DeLallo (25-11, D4-3), DePaul, 14-5.
Jr. Tyler Zimmerman (23-12, D3-3), Jefferson, p. 4-Jr. Zach D'Apolito (19-19, D4-2), Wayne Valley, 2:15.
7-Sr. Adam Kratch (31-7, D1-2), West Morris, tf. Sr. James Monaghan (19-16, D2-3), Roxbury, 20-5, 4:34.

Note: Porraspita in a tight one, trails, 3-2, in the second period. Porraspita on bottom in the third, gets the reversal and turns Colabella for four points, who screams out in pain. Porraspita up 6-3 with 54 seconds left. Gets another turn with a power half for three more and the win. Barrett up, 6-4, in the second. He gets three backs at the buzzer for a 10-5 lead through two. So the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds fall here. Kratch with the first technical fall of the night.

182 pounds

8-Jr. Peter Sutton (23-12, D2-2), Roxbury, p. Jr. Steve Cleaver (20-15, D1-3), Warren Hills, 1:53.
5-Sr. Luke Foukas (28-6, D4-2), Pequannock, md. Sr. Alex Reiman (15-11, D3-3), Wallkill Valley, 16-4.
6-Sr. Jon Fazio (27-5, D4-3), Lakeland, d. So. Joe Maso (11-9, D1-2), Phillipsburg, 14-7.
7-Sr. Josh Sibblies (31-4, D3-2), Newton, p. Sr. Dean Carlotti (22-13, D2-3), Morris Hills, 3:05.

Note: Sutton throws Cleaver to his back for the FALL! Sibblies with the opening takedown. Keep an eye on him at this loaded weight class. Sibblies on bottom to start the second. Maso on his back, trails, 8-4, in the second period. Sibblies with the FALL! Maso trails, 8-7, in the third, but gets tossed to his back.

195 pounds

8-Sr. Hunter McConnell (18-2, D4-2), Pompton Lakes, d. Fr. Scott Lavelle (25-10, D4-3), DePaul, 6-3.
5-Jr. Dylan Wunder (31-5, D3-2), Kittatinny, p. Sr. Andrew Trejo (19-15, D1-3), Mount Olive, 2:17.
Jr. Jose Delgado (30-7, D2-2), Morris Hills, p. 6-So. Gus Protogeropoulos (28-8, D3-3), Newton, 1:17.
Sr. Kristian Barrett (26-11, D2-3), Lenape Valley, p.7-Jr. Ryan Witner (17-18, D1-2), Warren Hills, 4:23.

Note: Wunder with the FALL! Got to hand it to him, he's really a 170-pounder that can't get in the lineup anywhere else. He was 195 last year as well. Protogeropoulos gets thrown to his back and is decked. That's the sixth seed to fall tonight -- three 5s, a 4, a 6, and an 8.

220 pounds

8-So. Aaron Flitcroft (12-5, D1-3), Mendham, p. Sr. Dante James (14-12, D2-2), Lenape Valley, 5:48.
4-Sr. Pete Andrich (33-4, D1-2), Mount Olive, md. Jr. Spencer Ochner (11-7, D4-3), Pequannock, 10-0.
3-Sr. Robert Levine (21-5, D4-2), Wayne Hills, p. Jr. Robert Hajnos (20-14, D3-3), Jefferson, 3:06.
7-Jr. Bobby McDonnell (29-7, D3-2), High Point, d. Jr. Laurence Bueno (19-17, D2-3), Montville, 4-2.

Note: James was in a tight match, 1-0, in the third before the pin ended his season. McDonnell up, 3-2, in the second. Apparently that was the third period and they never changed the board

285 pounds

8-Jr. Gunny Wassong (20-11, D3-2), High Point, d. Sr. Pat Wagner (17-15, D4-3), Wayne Valley, 3-1.
Sr. William Wenzel (27-3, D4-2), West Milford, d. 5-Sr. Jarrett Williams (26-8, D1-3), Phillipsburg, 9-7 SV.
Sr. Bobby Sperling (10-9, D2-2), Lenape Valley, d. 7-Jr. Tom Smith (19-15, D3-3), Kittatinny, 3-2.
2-Sr. Ryan Appleby (27-4, D1-2), Belvidere, p. Jr. Ethan Fox (13-20, D2-3), Montville, 1:34.

Note: Williams gets tossed to his back near the end of the first period -- Wenzel leads, 5-2, after one period. Williams out early in the second. Man, he was lucky the buzzer sounded. Sperling up, 3-1, late in the third. Takedown for Williams and an escape for Wenzel, 6-5, after two periods. Wenzel escapes to go up, 7-5, but Williams knots it at 7 with a takedown. I don't know why he's trying to ride. Williams has discovered something on their feet. We're heading to OT. Didn't see how much time was left, but probably not enough to let Wenzel up and go for a takedown. Wenzel takes Williams down to his back -- it's over.

Wrestling: Region 1 preview, predictions

Where: Wallkill Valley Regional High School, Hardyston.

Wednesday schedulePreliminaries, 5 p.m. (Doors open at 3 p.m.).

Friday schedule: Quarterfinals, 4 p.m. (Doors open at 2:40 p.m.)

Saturday schedule: (Doors open at 7 a.m.): Semifinals, 9 a.m., immediately followed by two rounds of wrestlebacks; third-place consolations approximately 30 minutes after wrestlebacks; championships following consolations.

Returning champions (5): David McFadden, DePaul; Sam Tareky, Wayne Valley; Tyler Kozimor, Hackettstown; Evan Bray, Belvidere; Dillon Artigliere, Roxbury (2011).

Qualifiers by school

High Point 12; Kittatinny 12; Phillipsburg 10; Roxbury 10; Wayne Valley 10; DePaul 9; Lenape Valley 9; West Morris 9; Warren Hills 8; Montville 7; Morris Knolls 6; West Milford 6; Jefferson 5; Wayne Hills 5; Belvidere 4; Lakeland 4; Mendham 4; Morris Hills 4; Mount Olive 3; Pompton Lakes 4; Pope John 4; Hopatcong 3; Pequannock 3; Randolph 3; Wallkill Valley 3; Hackettstown 2; Newton 2; North Warren 2; Sparta 2; Vernon 2; Butler 1; Dover 0; Kinnelon 0; Morris Catholic 0.

106 -- 1. Brandon Paetzell, Phillipsburg; 2. Dom Gallo, High Point; 3. Stephen Caserta, Roxbury.

Note: Really good weight class. Paetzell (29-5), who needs one win to become the fourth P'burg freshman to hit 30 and four to eclipse Rylan Watson's school record (32 in 2007-08), is so dominating on his feet. It was a takedown that gave him a 3-1 win in sudden victory over Gallo in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex semifinals. Gallo (32-3) owns a win over Caserta, 2-1, while slick Morris Knolls freshman Garrett O'Shea (33-3) is 1-2 against Caserta this season. DePaul's William Kui is another good one. Kui-Caserta in the quarterfinals on Friday should have the place jumping.

113 -- 1. Max Nauta, Warren Hills; 2. Bryan Damon, Jefferson; 3. A.J. Vindici, Randolph.

Note: Really looking forward to seeing how this weight class shakes out. For all of the talk about how Region 1 might be a little down this year, and I agree to an extent, this grouping gets you awfully excited about this week. Nauta, a runner-up at 106 last year, is the No. 3 seed, giving you a good idea of how tough this field is. The sophomore is looking real sharp -- decking tough P'burg senior Zach Fisher in the District 1 finals and beating the Stateliner for a third time. Damon (35-1), the two-time D3 champion, has been outstanding all season. He owns a 4-3 win over D2 champ Vindici, who was seventh in the state last year but third in R1. Nauta hammered Vindici in last year's R1 quarters and was knocked off a round before their rematch in AC.

120 -- 1. Jared Kobis, High Point; 2. Cory Fleming, West Morris; 3. Peter Lipari, Lenape Valley.

Note: Kobis (35-1), who is four wins shy of matching Nick Francavilla's freshman victories record (39) at the Sussex County school, has looked like the champion here all season to me, so I'm certainly not backing off now. It's impressive how High Point keeps cranking out these stud ninth-graders. His only loss is in OT to North Hunterdon state placewinner Ryan Pomrinca in the HWS finals. Fleming looked solid in winning the D1 title, though he had his hands full with North Warren's Matt Ritchie. Fleming is dangerous -- rallying from a 7-0 deficit against Kobis in the dual meet in a 10-9 loss. Lipari, who won his first D2 title, is in a tough quarter as the No. 4 seed. Wayne Valley's Tyler Hrycak also is a threat as the No. 3 seed.

126 -- 1. David McFadden, DePaul; 2. Joe Kratochvil, Warren Hills; 3. Ian Burke, Sparta.

Note: One of the clear-cut choices in this tournament as McFadden (34-1), the state runner-up last year at 113, rates as a heavy favorite for his second title in as many appearances. Kratochvil (29-5) is a returning finalist and looked real good in winning his second D1 title on Saturday. It gets a little dicey after those two. Burke (30-5) entered D3 as a favorite and was thumped in the final by Kittatinny freshman Austin Scrivani, one of a school-record six champs for the Cougars, who also had as many in 1996, 2000, '01, '02, '04 and '05. We will likely see Burke-Scrivani II in Friday's quarterfinals as they are the Nos. 5 and 4 seeds, respectively.

132 -- 1. Mike Derin, High Point; 2. Glenn Haines, Lenape Valley; 3. Sam Tareky, Wayne Valley.

Note: These weights aren't getting any easier as this one gives you a major migraine while dissecting this bracket. Tareky (34-3), a returning champion and his school's third overall, is real good. His attempt at repeating got a whole lot tougher when Derin (13-3), a third-place finisher last year, got thrown into the top half of the draw, along with returning finalist Anthony Johnson of P'burg. That's just the upper half and we'll see Derin and Johnson go at it in the quarters. Lurking down below is returning runner-up Glenn Haines of Lenape Valley, who is the No. 2 seed. Derin, who missed time earlier this season, is really rounding into form, though Tareky is super tough. I won't even use the word "upset," because all are capable of grabbing the gold.

138 -- 1. Matt Benvenuto, Lenape Valley; 2. Tom Murphy, Kittatinny; 3. Nick Matthews, West Morris.

Note: This might be the toughest of all 14 weights here, though I wouldn't argue anyone who fancies 132 or 145. Matthews (34-3) was ranked No. 1 all season by Open Mike, but slipped in the D1 final on Saturday -- blowing a 4-1 lead in the second period before getting chin-whipped and pinned by Phillipsburg's Max Elling. Benvenuto, who became the fourth at his school to win three district titles, has been solid all year though he was pinned by Murphy in their last encounter after a 6-5 win over the Kittatinny wrestler in the HWS semis. D3 champ Murphy (32-3) has two not-so-close wins over Elling this season. Matthews beat Benvenuto, 3-1, in a dual on Jan. 17.

145 -- 1. Jason Gaccione, High Point; 2. Tyler Kozimor, Hackettstown; 3. Jesse Thorsen, Belvidere.

Note: Trying to forecast this loaded weight is like playing the lottery, which I rarely do because of the impossible odds. Same feeling here. Thorsen is the top seed and won his first D1 title and OW honors at a class so stacked that returning champ and region fourth Andrew Kaluzny of P'burg failed to make the trip because of a fourth-place district finish. Kozimor is a returning region champ and lost to Thorsen, 7-6, in the D1 finals as he was looking to join his brother, Corey, a four-timer, and four other Tigers to win three or more district titles. Gaccione (33-4) was stunned by Kittatinny's Nick Romyns, 11-6, in the D3 finals -- getting tossed for five points after holding a 4-2 lead through two periods. That might have lit a huge fire under Romyns, who was fourth at 138 last year.

152 -- 1. Jimmy Schuitema, Phillipsburg; 2. Patrick VanDuyne, West Milford; 3. Dean Drugac, Morris Knolls.

Note: One of three weights where the pick is pretty much a consensus. Schuitema (29-3) is on a mission after finishing third here a year ago. The bottom half of the draw is extremely interesting. VanDuyne (29-4) dropped down for the postseason after appearing in only two bouts at 152 prior to districts. It's been eight years since West Milford had a champion (Rob Ragona in 2005). Drugac (33-3) was unbeaten in the region until a loss to Randolph's Sean Rodgers in the D2 finals. Drugac won their first meeting, 4-3, on Jan. 26. Jefferson's Luke Bohn (31-5) has been among the top five here all season, but was put to the test by Vernon's Ryan Ward in the D3 finals.

160 -- 1. Dillon Artigliere, Roxbury; 2. Sam Button, Mendham; 3. Jake Kocsis, Phillipsburg.

Artigliere (36-0), a two-time finalist and champ in 2011, may be the biggest favorite in recent R1 history. The junior, who enters the tournament with an overall mark of 107-8, has 19 pins, seven majors and three technical falls. Roxbury has 32 region champs in its history, tied with Kittatinny for sixth-most in this region. Button, who has lost twice to Artigliere by major decisions, really opened eyes by decking Kocsis in the first period in their D1 final. DePaul's Nick Carey (29-6) is the No. 4 seed.

170 -- 1. Parker Meytrott, Montville; 2. Kieran Gerrity, Kittatinny; 3. Broderick Bupivi, P'burg.

Note: Tough call here. Meytrott (36-1), who lost to Watchung Hills' Mike Carroccia, 3-1, early in the season, dropped a tough 2-0 decision to champion Clarke Moynihan of Kittatinny last year after a third-place finish in 2011. Gerrity (32-3), the top seed, was third last year at 160. The No. 3 seed is West Milford's Richard DiZenzo (26-6), who lost to Meytrott by technical fall and was pinned by Gerrity in the first period. Keep an eye on Phillipsburg's Broderick Bupivi (22-12), the six seed who won his first D1 title. He will match up with DiZenzo in the quarterfinals.

182 -- 1. Nick DePalma, DePaul; 2. Jake Brook, Kittatinny; 3. Evan Bray, Belvidere.

Note: Pretty deep class here with five wrestlers all capable of winning the title. DePalma (30-5), the No. 2 seed, had everyone talking early this season after his win by major decision over Bray (26-5), the No. 3 seed and a returning champion. Brook's D3 final with Newton's Josh Sibblies was a good one and earned the Kittatinny wrestler the No. 1 seed here. Brook (32-3) was third at 170 last year. Sibblies, who beat Brook in the HWS finals where Bray was third, has a a lot of talent and certainly is one of the stronger 182-pounders. He is the No. 7 seed and will have to navigate through DePalma and Bray just to get to the final. Morris Knolls' Michael Burns (35-1), the No. 3 seed, beat Sibblies, 3-2, earlier this season.

195 -- 1. Kyle Stoll, High Point; 2. Anthony Landberg, Wayne Valley; 3. Jesse Windt, West Morris.

Note: Brook dropping to 182 really opened up this weight class for Stoll, who finished third at 182 last year. Now it's up to him to take advantage of it. The third-seeded Stoll (30-5) has been a little hot-and-cold this season but he's super talented and a heavy favorite if he's on this week. Landberg (29-6), the top seed, was second at this weight a year ago -- losing to Newton's Jake Connelly, 3-2. Windt (30-7),  the No. 3 seed, steamrolled his way through a not-so-deep D1 field for his first title. He lost, 8-4, to Stoll on Feb. 9.

220 -- 1. J.B. Lawson, Belvidere; 2. Garrett Armstrong, Kittatinny; 3. Bobby McDonnell, High Point.

Note: We could be heading toward a third meeting between Lawson and Armstrong, who have split this season. Lawson (26-4), who won his first D1 title, prevailed, 3-2, in ultimate tiebreaker last time they met in the HWS finals. Armstrong (32-3), the D3 champion who has really come on this season, beat Lawson, 2-0, in December. He also owns three wins over McDonnell (28-7), the No. 7 seed and who is one to watch in the bottom quarter of the draw. Mount Olive senior Pete Andrich (32-4) is the D1 runner-up and has lost twice to Lawson, 5-2 and 7-3. He also lost, 5-4, in UTB to Wayne Valley's Justin Walker (28-5), the No. 2 seed. No. 3 Robert Levine of Wayne Hills, who lost, 4-2, to Lawson this year, was fourth at this weight in 2012.

285 -- 1. Andrew Pacheco, Warren Hills; 2. Ryan Appleby, Belvidere; 3. Jarrett Williams, P'burg.

Note: It's been a long time -- if ever -- that a group of heavyweights has entertained and drawn so much attention as the ones assembled here. Pacheco (29-5), a sophomore beast apply nicknamed "Bear," brought the D1 fans to their feet as he launched and decked Appleby in the finals on Saturday. They are 2-2 against each other the last two seasons. Pacheco is so talented that former Blue Streaks great Dan Slack, a Region 1 Hall of Famer and heavyweight state champ in 1977, slyly remarked that people are already saying "Dan who?" after that D1 performance in which Pacheco went a total of 1 minute, 58 seconds in three bouts. There's no chance that Slack, a three-time region champ and 75-3 in a three-year career, will be forgotten anytime soon. Appleby (26-4) prevailed, 13-7, when they met in December. Williams (26-7), the No. 5 seed, will have a lot of Garnet and Grey clad supporters this week at Wallkill's fan-friendly venue. He has a tough one out of the chute against West Milford's Will Wenzel (26-3) in the prelims. Williams is 1-1 in a pair of OT bouts with Appleby.

Wrestling: Districts 1, 2, 3 and 17 by the numbers

We had a great weekend of wrestling in the four districts that house teams in the Open Mike area.

Here's a capsule look at some of more noteworthy accomplishments:

312 -- Phillipsburg's total of district champions since Bill Lowe won the first in 1948. The Stateliners had a tournament-best five winners at District 1 -- freshman Brandon Paetzell, Anthony Johnson, Max Elling, Jimmy Schuitema and Broderick Bupivi. The Warren County school which has had five winners in three straight tournaments, won its 41st district team championship -- the first in 1967 -- and its third in a row. Only Delaware Valley (1992) and Hackettstown (2006, '07 and '10) have interrupted P'burg's title string since 1991. P'burg has produced at least one champion every year but 1950 and '55. The 'Liners will try to add to their region record total of 112 champs this week at Wallkill Valley.

99 -- Total number of champions for Kittatinny, which matched a program record with six winners on Saturday in District 3. Freshman Austin Scrivani started the run at 126 pounds, followed by Tom Murphy (138), Nick Romyns (145), Kieran Gerrity (170), Jake Brook (182) and Garrett Armstrong (220). Scrivani joined his brother, Garrett, who won two titles for the Cougars in 2010-11. Romyns' 11-6 win over High Point's Jason Gaccione, a 2012 champ, was his second title and earned him the Outstanding Wrestler Award. Kittatinny also claimed its 10th team championship and second in a row over High Point.

5 -- North Hunterdon led all teams in District 17 with five champions -- the most for the Lions since crowning that many in 2001. Paul Robinson (106), Ryan Pomrinca (120), Mike Ciavarro (152) and Dan Pepe (195) all won their first, while Liam Korbul repeated as the 182-pound champion. His brother, Russ, won the 189-pound title in 2007. Korbul also went over the 100-win mark in the quarterfinals.

104 -- High Point went over the century mark as a program with five winners in District 3. Sophomore Dom Gallo was No. 100 as he led off with a victory in the 106-pound final, followed by Jared Kobis (120), Mike Derin (132), Moses Yasin (160) and Kyle Stoll (195). Derin and Stoll were repeat winners, while Kobis was the fifth freshman since 2008 to win a title for the Wildcats. It's interesting to note that Nos. 1 and 100 were in attendance. Longtime assistant coach Mickey Thomas was the Sussex County school's first district winner in 1968 at 115 pounds. He won a second title in '71. Head coach John Gardner won three titles for the Hillbillies from 1988-90.

9 -- Number of consecutive years for Hopatcong with at least one district champion, as Victor Burgos kept the string alive with a victory at 285 in District 2. Burgos is the 26th winner for coach Eric Fajerman in his 13 seasons with the Chiefs, who missed just once in 2004 during his tenure. The Sussex County school has 69 winners overall since 1973, when Vin Sibilia, Gary Kessel and Bob Valli won the first titles.

It's also the number of Region 1 qualifiers for Lenape Valley, which includes three-time District 2 champion Matt Benvenuto. He's only the fourth three-timer for the Patriots, joining Gary Mikolay (1996-98), Derrick Goduto (1999-2001) and Chris Ressa (1999-2001). Mikolay is currently coaching at Dover, while Goduto is the head man at Cedar Grove. Lenape has now won at least one title for 10 straight years, as sophomores Peter Lipari (120) and Glenn Haines (132) won their first titles for the Pats.

3 -- A lucky number for three Hunterdon County programs that had wrestlers win their third titles in District 17. Delaware Valley's Mike Pongracz, Hunterdon Central's Gary Dinmore (138) and Voorhees' Jadaen Bernstein all struck gold for a third time. Pongracz, who is two wins shy of a school and Hunterdon-Warren record for career wins, is the eighth at Del Val to win three or more titles and the first to do it in non-consecutive seasons -- winning in 2010, '11 and '13. Del Val has crowned at least one champ since moving to this district in 2001 and has produced 40 of its total of 96 in D17. Bernstein is the 11th at his school, which has 107 overall, to win three and helped extend the Vikings' streak with at least one champ to eight straight years. Dinmore helped the Red Devils claim their 33rd district team championship.

12 -- Both High Point and Kittatinny are sending a dozen wrestlers to this week's Region 1 Tournament at Wallkill Valley -- the most among the 34 schools in the tournament.
