Wrestling: P'burg, South Plainfield form two-year deal

Two of New Jersey's premiere programs have agreed on a two-year contract to wrestle in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

Phillipsburg coach Dave Post confirmed on Monday afternoon that his Stateliners will host South Plainfield on Wednesday. Feb. 6 at The Pit.

"I had a meeting with [P'burg athletic director Tom Fisher] this morning and we spoke with [South Plainfield coach Kevin] McCann," Post said via text message. "The two-year contract will be mailed [Tuesday]."

Post said he is exploring the possibility of holding the match in conjunction with a food drive for Norwescap of Phillipsburg -- a local food pantry.

This will be the third meeting between the schools, which have met twice previously in the North 2, Group 3 sectional finals. P'burg won both -- 43-18 in 2004 and 34-21 in 2009, both at The Pit.

South Plainfield, which has won two of the last three Group 3 championships and appeared in three straight finals, is the favorite again for sectional and state championships.

Phillipsburg won the Group 4 title last year and despite losing seven starters, the 'Liners figure to challenge once again for the state championship.

Both P'burg and High Point attempted to get a match done for this season, but both coaches could not agree on potential dates. This season, there will be week in between the regular season and sectionals to pick up additional matches and that's what opened the door for P'burg-South Plainfield to get something done.
