Field hockey: Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex rankings

We've got quite a week in store with the 10th annual Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament in full swing and key conference showdowns on tap this week.

The big one is set for Tuesday as Voorhees travels to Warren Hills in a renewal of their rivalry (65th meeting) and a critical Skyland Conference Raritan Division matchup at 3:45 p.m.

Voorhees (6-4) will be looking to avenge a 3-1 loss at home in the season opener against Warren Hills, which has won four straight (its longest streak in the series) and eight of the last 11 meetings dating to 2013. Both have two losses in conference play, while the Blue Streaks also have a tie. The Vikings still hold a 33-25-6 edge in the all-time series dating to 1975.

Warren Hills (6-3-1), which had been reeling a bit after two straight losses, rallied for a 2-1 win over Hackettstown in sudden-victory overtime on Saturday. The Streaks had not lost three of their first nine games to start a season since going 5-3-1 in 2013. It worked out pretty well for that team, which didn't get its fourth loss until the season finale -- a 1-0 defeat against Ocean City in the Group 3 final.

Saturday's win was huge in terms of confidence for a young Warren Hills team that has just one senior on the roster and started four sophomores and two freshmen against Hackettstown.

"We did [need this win]," said second-year Streaks coach Josie Potter. "Hackettstown is a very solid program with a lot of talented players. I was a little nervous coming in. [My team] stepped up and was ready to play."

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of Warren Hills' slow start this season has been the lack of offense. Coming into Saturday, the Streaks had scored just four goals in their previous five games and had no player in the Top 20 among Open Mike's area scoring leaders. This prompted a lineup change for Hackettstown.

"We've struggled a little bit on finishing in the offensive circle," Potter said. "We had [junior Samantha Dugan who scored the tying goal] playing in the midfield, but we moved her back to the forward line [where she started all of last year] because of her experience there. We switched our lineup [for Hackettstown] to a 4-2-3-1 to give us four forwards, and it opened things up."

Warren Hills has been rock-solid on defense. Junior Kate Fenner moved from sweeper to center back and has thrived there, while sophomore Kylie Compton has excelled in Fenner's old position. Both had stellar games on Saturday, along with sophomore Liz Schlaffer and freshman Emily Dvorsky in the backfield for a unit that suffered a crushing blow with the loss of sophomore Ashley Moskal, who is out for the season with an ACL injury and was at the game on Saturday on crutches.

"Kate is the key to our defense back there and does a nice job leading with her experience," Potter said. "[Compton] started the season as our right midfielder, and when he lost Liz with a concussion, we shifted her to right back, and when Ashley got hurt, we put her at sweeper and she's killing it there. She has a calm demeanor and sees the ball so well."

Warren Hills knows that Voorhees will come there on Tuesday with revenge on its mind.

"[The win over Hackettstown] was good motivation for us going into Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex and Voorhees," Fenner said. "We're excited to play [on Tuesday]."

Now, onto this week's rankings:

1. Hunterdon Central (8-1) -- We have a new No. 1 team as the Red Devils jumped into the top spot following a 1-0 win at Warren Hills on Wednesday -- the program's first since regular-season victory in the series since 2007. Junior forward Sammy Freeman scored the decisive goal and goalie Gabby Puskas made three saves for her third shutout of the season.
