Breakdown: This should be an outstanding day of wrestling with three teams in the field that are ranked in the New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20. North Hunterdon, which won the rugged Boresch Duals on Jan. 4, with wins over Kingsway and Paulsboro, is looking to cement its status as the top-ranked public school program. Third-year coach Chris Hrunka's Lions feature a balanced lineup with no glaring weakness, and that's a major problem for the Lions' opponents. An anticipated matchup with West Essex in the semis should provide some interesting bouts in the middle weights, where the Knights are strong, but North can hold its own there as it did against Kingsway's tough middle of the lineup. Other than 285, North will have the edge up top to carry the Lions to the final. High Point, which has been hampered by injuries, will likely have a much tougher road in the bottom half of the draw. Provided Warren Hills, which is up against match limits with several starters, gets past Westfield (projects as a 7-7 split) in the opening round, the Blue Streaks will be able to match up against the Wildcats (who match up much better with Westfield) up top, with 195 and 220 being enormous bouts. Look for Hills to bump away from Talmadge at 138 (Nemeth and Malia would be big favorites at 145 and 152) and Brian Soldano at 160 to try and win from 170 through 285. With Slivka the only favorite from 106-138, the Streaks would probably need seven of the eight from 145 up to pull off the upset -- given the likely bonus advantage for High Point. In the final, North's balance should be too much for High Point, which will be favored at 113, 126, 132 and 138, but only at 160 from 145 on up. I think the Lions could win as many as nine bouts and will win the bonus points battle as well.
Predictions: North Hunterdon over High Point, 37-23 (first place); High Point over Warren Hills, 33-26 (semifinals); North Hunterdon over West Essex, 37-22 (semifinals).
