Wrestling: State powers set for Boresch Duals

It's one of the elite events on the high school calendar in New Jersey as several of the Garden State's top teams are slated to compete in the 16th Henry Boresch Duals on Saturday at Newton High School.

North Hunterdon, the 2020 champion and making its third Boresch Duals appearance since 2010, is the No. 2 seed. Howell (No. 1 seed) and South Plainfield (No. 3) also headline the eight-team field, which includes Shore Conference area teams Lacey Township and Toms River North, as well as Bound Brook and host Newton.
North won the Iacono Tournament this season.

North (3-1), which scored a 33-22 win over Group 3 contender Warren Hills in its last dual action, bids to become the fifth repeat winner in the Boresch Duals and first since Paulsboro went back-to-back in 2018 and '19. Coach Chris Hrunka's team is led by state medalists juniors Logan Wadle (6-5 at 113), who was second at 106 last season and Alex Uryniak (13-2 at 190, seventh in 2021) and senior Liam Akers (12-1 at 285, seventh in 2020). Juniors Daniel Delusant (12-3 at 138) and Brendan Raley (14-1 at 215) are enjoying breakout campaigns.

The Lions are set to face No. 7 Toms River North (2-2), while Howell (5-0), one of the favorites in the Group 5 title chase, opposes No. 8 Bound Brook (0-2) at 9 a.m. Coach John Gagliano's Rebels return for the first time since consecutive Boresch Duals finals appearances (winning in 2015) and own a quality 32-31 victory against Christian Brothers Academy on Jan. 5.

No. 5 Hanover Park (3-1), guided by former Kittatinny region champion Tyler Branham (110-25 career), will square off against No. 4 Lacey (5-1), making its first Boresch Duals appearance, while South Plainfield (1-0), the No. 3 seed and four-time Boresch Duals winner, battles No. 6 Newton on the adjacent mat at approximately 10:30 a.m.

Newton (1-0), which finished eighth in the 2020 Boresch Duals and won its fourth and last title in 2010, is led by junior Thaylor Sibblies (3-1 at 144), a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament runner-up, and  and Takeo Sibblies (3-1 at 150), a third-place finisher at HWS this past Saturday.
The Boresch Duals were not held in 2020 due to COVID.

In addition to Wadle, Uryniak and Akers, there are three other state medal winners in the field, including Howell sophomore Sebastian Ortega (5-2 at 120, fifth at 113 last season) and senior state champion Hunter Mays (11-1 at 160), who finished third at the prestigious Powerade Tournament on Dec. 30. South Plainfield, among contenders for the Group 3 title, features senior Jeffrey Jacome (3-0 at 113), who finished fourth at 106 in 2021.

Hanover Park features talented freshman Vincenzo LaValle (8-2 at 190), who finished fifth in the Beast of the East and scored a 3-1 win in sudden-victory OT against Delbarton's Nicholas Olivieri, a two-time state qualifier. LaValle's father, James, was a former head coach and a three-time state champion for the Hornets under the late Ernie Eveland.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Note: Per school policy, only two spectators per wrestler will be allowed to purchase tickets.
