Wrestling: Rhinehart adds to Streaks family legacy

WASHINGTON TWP. -- The Rhinehart family's long wait is finally over.

After nearly 50 years, Warren Hills junior Davey Rhinehart added another district gold medal to the list by pinning his way to the 126-pound title on Saturday afternoon in the District 7 Tournament at Warren Hills Regional High School.

Rhinehart (29-5), who finished third the two previous postseasons, is the first in his immediate family to win a championship since great uncle, Rob, won at 158 pounds in what was then District 12 in 1976. Another great uncle, Rick, won three titles (1967, '68 and '70), while Davey's late grandfather, John, won one in 1969 for the Blue Streaks en route to a state runner-up finish at 178 pounds. Rob's grandson, Hunter Cleaver, who came up in the Washington system, won two titles for Phillipsburg in 2022-23.

"That feels really good to see me up there with them," said top-seeded Davey, who logged a tournament-best three pins in the least amount of time (5:32), including his second period fall against Passaic Tech junior and No. 2 seed Malik Abuharthieh in the finals.

Davey's title was among three for Warren Hills, which finished third in the team standings and advanced six wrestlers to next weekend's Region 2 Tournament at Mount Olive. Junior Augie Szamreta (113) won his second straight district championship, while senior Tyler Redfield (132) made dual history in logging his 100th career win in the finals while becoming only the fifth Blue Streak to win four district golds. Senior Charlie Piccione (second at 120), sophomore Aidan Webb (second at 138) and senior Tyler O'Neill (third at 165) also moved on to regions for Hills.

Davey Rhinehart was well aware of his family's wrestling history and its long district title drought. His father, David, was a District 1 third-place finisher at 171 pounds in 1998. Father and son quickly sought each other out after Davey's finals win to share a hug in celebration. Rob was also in attendance to witness a special family moment.

Davey, now 86-20 overall, said his dad has been helping to prepare him all along for this moment.

"Since the beginning of the season," said Davey Rhinehart, a standout football player, like his dad, who also plays lacrosse in the spring "All year, he's just reminding me, making me work hard, keeping me on track, making sure I'm eating right and doing all of that."

Davey Rhinehart, known for his aggressive style on the mat, stayed on the attack from his first bout on, needing just 1:40 in total to dispose of his first two District 7 opponents. In the title bout, Rhinehart put Abuharthieh on his back twice with a bar and a half to log four points in the first period and a tilt for three more in the second before using a reverse half and body press to get the winning fall.

"In the postseason, all the kids are working hard same as me, I just have to keep stepping it up," Rhinehart said. "Keep bringing it to them. I've been trying to get more tilts and get quick points. With these good kids, I'm not going to be able to bar everyone up and pin them, so I'm just working on some new stuff going into the postseason."

Rhinehart may be flying a bit under the radar heading into the two-day Region 2 Tournament, which begins on Friday. The top four qualifiers there will advance to the state championships in Atlantic City held at Boardwalk Hall on March 6-8. Can Rhinehart punch his first career ticket to AC?

"I want to go pretty far," Rhinehart said. "If I can go all the way, I'll go all the way ... but we'll see what happens."
