Field hockey: Red Devils, 'Cats advance in HWS

The fifth annual Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament held true to the seeds in Saturday's opening round as all eight of the home teams advanced to next weekend's quarterfinals.

In fact, six of the eight first-round games were shutouts, while only three Sussex County schools earned victories. The only top four seed to lose was Vernon.

High Point 2, Delaware Valley 1 -- Junior forward Alexis Ambrosino scored a goal and added an assist for top-seeded High Point (10-0-1), the lone unbeaten team in this year's field. Katie Maddalena scored for No. 8 seed Del Val (5-6-1) with 12:49 left in the second half.

Warren Hills 6, Kittatinny 0 -- Freshman forward Dani Profita and senior Shannon Zignoli each scored a pair of goals and goalie Taylor Austin recorded the shutout for the fourth-seeded Blue Streaks (9-3-1), who have won six in a row. Goalie Julie Pevarnik made 24 saves for the No. 5 Cougars (5-4-1).

Lenape Valley 1, Belvidere 0 -- Sophomore midfielder Gianna Puco scored off a feed from junior captain Sally Olson as the third-seeded Patriots (7-3-1) advanced to the quarterfinal for the first time in tournament history. Goalie Maddie Beaumont made 16 saves for the County Seaters (4-7-1).

Voorhees 3, Wallkill Valley 0 -- In a game played on Friday, sophomore forward Kathryn Roncoroni scored her 21st goal to help the second-seeded Vikings (9-3) improve to 12-2 all-time in HWS games. The seventh-seeded Rangers (6-7) have faced Voorhees in each of the last three tournaments, going 1-2.

South Hunterdon 5, North Warren 0 -- Senior forward Kaycee Zelkovsky scored three goals -- raising her HWS-leading total to 25 -- and sophomore forward Ashley Eick added a pair as the top-seeded Eagles (11-1) rolled past the ninth-seeded Patriots (3-7-1), who were coming off their first county win.

Hackettstown 9, Vernon 0 -- Senior forward Sierramarie Fitzgerald and sophomore forward Samantha Strathern each scored three goals to pace the fifth-seeded Tigers (7-3) past the fourth-seeded Vikings (5-6), who received seven saves from goalie Lauren Incarnato.

Hunterdon Central 6, Newton 0 -- Senior midfielder Jane Higley scored three goals and senior forward Sarah Pulkowski scored a goal -- her seventh in seven games -- as the third-seeded Red Devils (9-2) reached the quarters for just the second time by blanking the sixth-seeded Braves (3-6-1).

Sparta 2, Phillipsburg 1 -- Sophomore midfielder Gretchen Bowie and junior Shannon Monahan connected for goals as the second-seeded Spartans (6-3) reached the quarterfinals for the first time. Sophomore Kylie Marhold scored for the seventh-seeded Stateliners (2-8-2).
