Field hockey: Streaks, Tigers reach HWS semifinals

The quarterfinal round of the fifth annual Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament is in the books with some surprising results.

The shocker on Saturday was No. 5 seed Hackettstown's 3-2 win over top-seeded South Hunterdon in a game decided by strokes. After two sudden-victory overtime periods failed to produce a winner, Kalie Thies, Samantha Strathern and Alanna Fitzgerald converted strokes to move the Tigers into the semifinals for the first time in tournament history.

No. 4 Warren Hills rolled to a 3-0 win over top-seeded and previously unbeaten High Point to set up a third meeting with Voorhees, a 3-2 winner in overtime against Lenape Valley, this season in the tri-county semifinals.

Here are the matchups for next Saturday's semifinals. Times to be announced. No Sussex County schools advanced to the final four for the first time in tournament history:

4B-Warren Hills at 2B-Voorhees

5B-Hackettstown at 3B-Hunterdon Central

Quarterfinal results:

Warren Hills 3, High Point 0 -- Junior midfielder Nikki Profita scored a pair of goals and junior forward Sydney Muntone converted her team-leading 13th goal to lift the fourth-seeded Blue Streaks (11-3-1) to their eighth straight win and a fifth straight appearance in the semifinals. Senior midfielder Nikki Schott had a pair of assists as Warren Hills finished with a 31-2 advantage in shots-on-goal. Goalie Autumn Smith made 28 saves for the top-seeded Wildcats (11-1-2), who have been shut out in back-to-back games.

Voorhees 3, Lenape Valley 2 (OT) -- Sophomore forward Kathryn Roncoroni collected a pair of assists -- as she was held without a goal for just the fourth time this season -- to help the second-seeded Vikings (12-3) reach the semifinals. Abby Flagler and Tori Crans scored goals in regulation and Ashley Kerekgyarto connected from Roncoroni on the winning goal about midway through OT. Junior forwards Alyssa Falleni and Kassidy Forik scored goals for the third-seeded Patriots (9-4-1), playing in their first HWS quarterfinal game in the first-ever meeting between these schools.

Hackettstown 3, South Hunterdon 2 (OT-strokes) -- Sophomore Samantha Strathern and senior Sierramarie Fitzgerald scored goals in regulation and Strathern converted one of the team's three strokes in overtime to help lift the fifth-seeded Tigers (9-4), who finished with a 22-7 edge in shots, to an upset-win over the top-seeded Eagles (12-3), who lost 3-1 in the round of strokes in their bid to reach the program's first HWS semifinal. South forward Kaycee Zelkovsky (30 goals) was held without a goal for the first time this season. Forward Ashley Eick and midfielder Brett Lelie scored for the Hunterdon County school.

Hunterdon Central 2, Sparta 1 -- Junior forward Kendall Nickel recorded a pair of assists on goals by Kailey Dalgauer and Jane Higley to power the third-seeded Red Devils (12-2) to their second straight HWS semifinal appearance. Coach Jenn Sponzo picked up career win No. 202. Rhett Curran scored off a feed from Gretchen Bowie for the second-seeded Spartans (8-4), who were playing in their first quarterfinal game. The Sussex County school managed just two shots-on-goal against 13 for Central.
