In the bottom bracket, No. 3 seed Newton moved on with a 34-30 win over No. 6 Lakeland. The victory moved coach Eric Bollette (250-196-1) into a tie with the legendary Henry Boresch (250-44-8 in 38 seasons from 1926-64) for the program wins mark. The Braves will travel to No. 2 Westwood on Wednesday.
Also in Sussex County, No. 2 seed Kittatinny cruised to a 60-12 win over No. 7 Cresskill, which also dropped a 58-12 decision when the teams met in last season's opening round in North 1, Group 1. The Cougars will next face No. 3 seed North Warren, which scored a 42-30 win against No. 6 Hawthorne. Pope John (Non-Public B), which was idle on Monday, has won nine sectional titles in its history and is seeking its third straight.
Phillipsburg (14-2) took its next step toward the program's 41st sectional finals appearance with a 76-0 waxing of Millburn in the first meeting between the schools. The second-seeded Stateliners, who have won an HWS-best 38 sectional titles, will face Middletown North for the fourth time in the last five postseasons in the North 2, Group 4 semifinals. Middletown North lost to P'burg in three of the previous four sectional finals -- 45-16 in 2016, 36-27 in '17 and 32-30 in '18 -- and was ousted by North Hunterdon in last year's semifinal round.
Hunterdon Central (12-9), which is the No. 2 seed in Central Jersey, Group 5 and is sitting on 997 wins as a program, moved into the semifinals with a 49-24 win over South Brunswick. Junior Colton Washleski (28-3 at 145), a two-time state qualifier, recorded his 90th career win for the Red Devils, who will take on No. 3 seed Monroe on Wednesday.
Delaware Valley, also a No. 1 seed, advanced with a 79-0 victory over No. 8 New Providence. The Terriers (16-7), who won the North 2, Group 1 title last season, have won 18 championships overall, which is the second most in the county behind Hunterdon Central (22). Senior Gage Crater picked up his 100th career victory -- the 13th wrestler to do so for Del Val, which will host Secaucus in the semis.
