Wrestling: 'Cats, 'Liners roll; Fernandes sets mark

High Point's wrestling team needed one final tuneup before embarking on what it hopes is a run toward a second consecutive Group 2 title.

The 'Cats looked postseason ready, recording seven pins, including one by super freshman Brian Soldano in a marquee bout at 170 pounds, as they rolled to a 49-21 victory over West Morris on Friday night in an independent clash in Wantage Township.

High Point bids for a 27th sectional title next week.
High Point (12-2), which is the No. 1 seed in North 1, Group 2 and ranked No. 11 in the New Jersey Writers Top 20 poll, will next look to extend its Sussex County record for sectional titles to 27 as it hosts Ramsey in the opening round on Monday. Coach John Gardner's team is also hoping to have senior state placewinner Brandon LaRue (elbow injury) back in the lineup next week.

The 'Cats took care of business without LaRue, as Soldano built an 11-0 lead before decking West Morris senior John DeVito. Senior Andrew Lewis added a pin at 220 as High Point grabbed a 15-9 lead through six bouts before the turn. Freshman Clayton Utter (106) and junior Devon Liebl (113) followed with pins, and senior Devin Flannery (120) added a 14-2 major decision -- racking up three takedowns and two sets of three back points against Robert Bohr -- to make it 31-9 through nine.

Sophomore Nick Douma, in his season debut at 126, clinched the win by decking Daniel Kern in 3:30. Sophomore Josh Gervey (138) and junior Billy Talmadge (145) also had pins for the 'Cats, who enjoyed a 15-5 edge in takedowns.

West Morris (9-6), which has been ranked in the NJWWA poll at one point this season, was missing three starters, including its top wrestler in senior Justin LeMay (20-4), a state qualifier who lost by injury default in the Morris County Tournament finals at 152 on Saturday.

Stateliners cage Terriers

Senior Travis Jones moved to closer to a career milestone and sophomore Logan Maczko made a successful debut at 106 pounds as Phillipsburg won nine bouts en route to a 36-16 win over Delaware Valley in a Skyland Conference cross-divisional matchup at the Dan Hutchins Memorial Gymnasium in Alexandria Township.

Jones (24-3) decked Chase Christie in 1:41 at 126 pounds for his 94th career victory as he looks to reach the 26th P'burg wrestler to reach the century mark. In the previous bout, freshman Joey Innamorato, who had a huge pin in the win over Easton (Pa.) on Wednesday night, clinched it for the 'Liners with a 12-2 major at 120.

Maczko (21-8), a returning region qualifier who will wrestle at 106 in the postseason after competing in 28 bouts at 113 this season, gave P'burg, which was without seniors Bryce Parenti and Kyle Tino due to bout limits, a 23-9 lead through nine bouts with a 17-2 technical fall over Derek Schepens.

Delaware Valley (10-6), which was coming off a 35-24 win over Warren Hills on Wednesday that created a three-way tie for the Skyland Conference Valley Division title, was looking to snap an 11-match skid in the series, is now 6-37 all-time against P'burg dating to 1975 and has not won since back-to-back victories in 2005 and '06, the latter a 42-9 rout at The Pit.

Senior A.J. DeRosa improved to 122-23 in his career with a 10-0 major of Jason Tino in the next-to-last bout at 132. DeRosa is one win shy of matching former state runner-up Bobby Stevely (123-32 from 2006-10) for fifth place on the Terriers' all-time list.

P'burg, the top seed in North 2, Group 4, will close out the regular season at Ocean Township on Saturday in a final tuneup before hosting No. 8 seed Linden in the opening round of the sectional tournament on Monday night. Del Val is the top seed in North 2, Group 1 and will host No. 8 seed Secaucus.

Fernandes stands alone

Voorhees state champion Lewis Fernandes made school history on Friday night by becoming the Vikings' all-time wins leader in the team's 44-22 in over Manville in Lebanon Township.

Fernandes (30-0), who is looking to become the school's first two-time state champion, received a forfeit at 285 pounds to improve to 136-22 all-time as he surpassed former state runner-up Jadaen Bernstein (135-19 from 2009-13). Fernandes has recorded 23 pins (16 in a minute or less) and one technical fall to go with six forfeits this season.

"He's a role model for me," Fernandes said of Bernstein after winning his second Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament title on Jan. 12. "He's great. If I can be half the man he is, I will be doing well."

Voorhees (19-5) drew the No. 5 seed in North 2, Group 3 and will look to avenge an earlier loss to No. 4 seed Warren Hills on Monday night. The Vikes, who captured the program's 17th sectional title last season, dropped a 37-19 decision to the Blue Streaks on Dec. 19.
