North Hunterdon forward Lauren Masters has made her prolific scoring look relatively easy during her first three high school seasons. So it was inevitable that records would soon fall by the wayside.
Masters secured the biggest of them all on Saturday, scoring four goals to establish a new career mark for the Lions in their 13-1 rout of Watchung Hills. With a total of five goals in two games, Masters, the program's all-time points leader who led all Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex scorers with 26 goals and 59 points in 2020, has 61 career goals, surpassing Beth Gromlowicz (57 from 1983-86), a member of the school's Hall of Fame and who is among a just a handful of players to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds for the St. Bonaventure University women's basketball program.
Masters averages nearly two goals per game for her career. |
Keep this is mind: Masters, a University of Louisville commit, is only a junior. It's scary to think what the career numbers will look like once she's done in 2022.
Masters' combination of speed and tenacity, she is also on the girls' wrestling team, has made her one of the top players in the state, pairing well with fellow speedster, senior Ryan Anderson to form quite a 1-2 punch on a potent forward line.
Anderson, who logged an area-best 26 assists in 2019 and 18 in '20, is North's career leader with 52. The North offense runs deep, with seniors Olivia Reeder and Ava Laible also capable scorers, while senior Katie Roberts and junior Sara Roberts combining for six goals through two games.
North Hunterdon (2-0), which hasn't won a county tournament title since going back-to-back in the former Hunterdon-Warren event in 1985-86 and has not beaten Warren Hills, the reigning Skyland Conference Raritan Division champion since 2009, is looking to end both droughts this season.
"While I am honored to have broken this record, my team and I have big goals we want to achieve together this season," said Masters, who has been held without at least one goal or an assist just eight times in 36 career games, including a 3-0 loss to Warren Hills last season.
"The North field hockey program is my family. Our team works extremely hard together and I am so excited to see where this season takes us."
