Wrestling: Trio of state champs to enter R1 HOF

HARDYSTON TWP. -- Next year's Region 1 Hall of Fame ceremony will feature three former New Jersey state champions as Chris Skretkowicz, David Zabriskie and Jamie Wicks will be enshrined in 2016.

The trio will be inducted during a ceremony prior to next season's championship round at Wallkill Valley Regional High School. Skretkowicz and Wicks will be the first representatives from their schools to enter the Hall of Fame, while Zabriskie joins John Gardner.

Skretkowicz (84 percent) was a three-time district, two-time region champion and three-time state placewinner at Wallkill Valley, where he compiled a mark of 124-13. He was a two-time state finalist, winning the 171-pound title in 2000. Skretkowicz, now the head coach at Virginia Military Institute, was a two-time All-American at Hofstra University.

Zabriskie (78 percent), a two-time region qualifier and champion in 2005, the former High Point star finished sixth in the state in 2004 and won a state championship at 215 pounds in '05. He went on to a stellar collegiate career at Iowa State, where he was a four-time NCAA qualifier and three-time All-American. He was the 285-pound national champion in 2010.

Wicks (78 percent), who is considered one of Delaware Valley's finest, was a three-time district, two-time region and two-time state champ for the Terriers (1987, '88). He compiled a career mark of 92-5, which ranks 15th on the school's all-time list. Del Val moved to Region 5 in 2001.

Here are the other nominees and their voting totals. They all will remain on the ballot for 2017.

Brent Conly (63 percent) -- A three-time district and region champion, the former Delaware Valley star and head coach won two state titles in 1992 and '93, after placing fourth in '91. He was unable to compete for a third state championship due to a season-ending hand injury in '94. Conly ranks 18th on the school's all-time wins list at 89-6-1.

Jan Michaels (44 percent) -- Regarded as one of the best to come out of Sussex County, Michaels was a two-time district champion and Vernon's only two-time region champ. He was a three-time state qualifier, winning the 148-pound title in 1979 after finishing second in '78. He went on to become a three-time NCAA All-American at North Carolina. A very successful coach, Michaels guided High Point to an overall record of 47-12 in three seasons (1994-96) and three sectional titles. Individually, he coached three region champions, as well as two state finalists.

Doug Blake (44 percent) -- Nearly 40 years later, Blake is still the only state champion in Hackettstown's history, winning titles in 1967 and '68 at 157 and 168 pounds, respectively. Considered one of the best to ever come out of Warren County, he was a three-time district and a two-time region champion for the Tigers.

Brett Raimondo (41 percent) -- Two-time district and three-time region champion -- one of only 32 to win three titles in this region -- and the 1988 state champion at 112 pounds. He's the only Mendham wrestler to win three region championships and compiled a career mark of 105-14-1.

Patrick Dattalo (34 percent) -- One of three brothers to compete for coach Mike Suk, Dattalo was a two-time district and two-time state champion -- winning the Donald Ringler Award as the tournament's OW in 2002.

Arnie Thompson (16 percent) -- A two-time district and region champion for the former Washington High School, now known as Warren Hills. Thompson won a pair of state titles for the Blue Streaks at 148 and 157 pounds in 1965 and '66, the program's 34th and 35th championships. He is one of 12 wrestlers to win two state titles for the Warren County school, and among 10 to win at least two region titles.

Larry Vandermark (13 percent) -- Former Newton star was a two-time district and region champion, while also winning a pair of state titles for the Braves at 148 pounds in 1961 and '62. Vandermark and teammate Frank Pace were the first wrestlers to claim two region titles for the Sussex County school.

Mark Preston (13 percent) -- A three-time district and two-time region champion, the former Sparta star was a two-time state finalist, finishing second in 1974 and winning a title at 129 pounds in '75 to become the Sussex County school's first state champ. He is still only one of three wrestlers to win a state gold for the Spartans.

Wrestling: Region 1 quarterfinals recap, tidbits

HARDYSTON TWP. -- As expected, it was mostly the DePaul vs. Phillipsburg show in the quarterfinal round of the Region 1 Tournament at Wallkill Valley Regional High School.

The Stateliners advanced an Open Mike area-best six into Saturday's semifinal round, while DePaul went a perfect 10-for-10 in the quarters to help District 4 move the most wrestlers into the semifinals (16) for the first time, at least since this region moved here in 1983. District 1 was next with 15, followed by District 2 with 14 and District 3 with 11.

Here's a look at some of the highlights from a busy Friday night:

'Cats on the prowl

High Point gained a measure of satisfaction off a tough dual meet season by sending four wrestlers to the semifinals -- juniors Jared Kobis (138) and Kevin Lewis (285), along with seniors Dom Gallo (126) and Jason Gaccione (145).

Kobis (28-0), a two-time District 3 champion, continued his march toward a Region 1 title with a 5-2 win over Morris Knolls' Michael Nigro -- setting up a much anticipated showdown with unbeaten Mendham senior and state placewinner Eric Friedman on Saturday morning.

On Monday, Kobis received the No. 4 seed, throwing him into the top bracket with Friedman (36-0), who earned the top seed. The unusual draw was a source of much discussion among coaches and some fans on message boards, and it may prompt some changes for next season. Nonetheless, Kobis took it all in stride.

"I was a little shocked. Not sure how I wasn't the No. 2, but I have to wrestle Friedman sooner or later," said Kobis, who is 68-4 in his career and has battled numerous injuries in three seasons.

"I just have to keep wrestling. This is nothing different, it's just another match. You have to take it one at a time and you have to get through the semifinals to get [to states]."

Kobis converted a pair of takedowns, including one in the first period vs. Nigro, in advancing to the semis for the second time in his career. Despite the win, Kobis was not that happy with his performance, though he made a mental note of the bout for future reference.

"Not my best. I've wrestled better," he said. "I just have to keep wrestling and not stop like I did today. I always try to score that first takedown, and then try to go from there."

Gallo rolled to a 7-1 win over West Morris freshman Marco Gaita, while Gaccione decked Roxbury's Richard Day in 3:24. Gaccione is seeking his second title after winning as a sophomore en route to a fourth-place finish in the state tournament. His brother, Joe, won three Region 1 titles, while their uncle and coach John Gardner is one of just three to win four titles in this usually loaded region.

Lewis, a District 3 champ, scored the fastest pin of the quarterfinal round -- needing just 10 seconds to flatten Pequannock's Johanser Joseph. In the North 1, Group 2 semifinals two weeks ago, Lewis, who will next meet returning champ Andrew Pacheco of Warren Hills, decked Joseph in 31 seconds.

Record breaker

Though he would never admit to it, the ever humble Ian Burke has been the poster boy for Sparta's wrestling program the last four seasons and an integral piece to the Sussex County school's resurgence.

Burke made his mark yet again in the quarterfinals with a 6-3 decision over Wayne Hills' Joseph Stambouly at 145 pounds, becoming the Spartans' all-time wins leader in the process. Burke (35-3) is 119-21 overall, moving past Matt Stoppay (118-25 from 1999-2003), a former two-time Region 1 champ and the Outstanding Wrestler Award winner in '03.

"I owe it all to our coaches and everyone in the [practice] room for pushing me all the time. It's been an awesome ride," said Burke, one of two Spartans to reach the semis along with classmate Walker Schmitzer (160). "The record is not so much about me. It's indicative of the whole Sparta program under coach [Frank] Battaglia. As a team, we really turned things around and put Sparta back on the map in a lot of ways."

Burke gets a semifinals rematch with Gaccione, who prevailed, 14-11, when they met last weekend in the District 3 finals. Burke, trailed, 9-3, before putting Gaccione on his back with a headlock, but the High Point wrestler signaled for injury time and the bout was stopped at 9-9, as Burke was awarded a four-point nearfall. Gaccione escaped to make it 10-9 and iced his third district title with two takedowns in the third period.

"I don't really want to comment on it. He won fair and square," said Burke, a four-time qualifier who was joined by five other Spartans in the quarters. "I'm just looking to keep pushing an go as far as I can. This is all gravy. It's great to have a lot of my teammates here. It's a great atmosphere."

Garrett Gerndt (113), Nathan Sowers (152), Connor Lore (182) and Gavin Lally (220) all fell into the wrestlebacks with quarterfinal losses.

Is it Renne's time?

Hackettstown coach Frank Rodgers may have summed it up best after junior Joe Renne recorded a big 4-3 win over Kittatinny's Nick Klinger in their 120-pound quarterfinal matchup.

"You got the monkey off your back," Rodgers told his wrestler in the locker room.

Indeed that may be the case for Renne, a two-time District 1 finalist, who earned his first trip to the region semifinals, while evening the all-time score with Klinger. In three previous meetings, Renne was 1-2 after a technical fall win as freshmen. Last season, Klinger won by scores of 12-5 and 8-6, the latter result occurring in the 2014 Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex finals.

A first-period takedown for Renne was clutch in this one. Klinger is exceptional on his feet, but Renne was just too big and strong after making the late-season drop from 126. Every time Klinger got in on a shot, he was stonewalled by Renne's strength. Klinger went ahead, 3-2, in the third after a reversal, but Renne tied it with an escape and got another in the third period for the winning point.

"Klinger is really good on his feet, so I had to set up my shots well," said Renne, now 32-6 on the season and 89-26 overall. " It felt good [getting that first takedown] knowing I could go into the second period on top. At the end I was just defending [his shots]. I do feel strong at 120. It's a different type of wrestling. Usually, the lighter you go, the quicker kids are."

Renne earns a semifinal date with top seed Mojahed Hamdeh of Wayne Hills, the champion last season at 113 pounds.

"I'm in the semis now, it's the first time I've been here. I feel good," Renne said. "This is the go get [the title] year."

Back points

Warren Hills went 2-for-2 in the quarterfinals as seniors Max Nauta (132) and Pacheco continued their bids for a second Region 1 title. Nauta scored a 5-0 win over North Warren's Gino Fluri in a rematch of their District 1 final, while Pacheco decked Lakeland's Jake Hanstien in 1:42.

Nauta (28-6) is looking to become the Blue Streaks' first four-time finalist since Dave Richmond (2003-06), who was a three-time champ. Pacheco is bidding to become the second heavyweight at his school to win back-to-back titles since former state champ and Region 1 Hall of Fame member Dan Slack won three in a row (1975-77).

Phillipsburg sophomore Robert Melise was looking like a sure bet to record the fastest fall on Friday with a 13-second job against Jefferson's Avery Sheruda, until Lewis' 10-second pin at 285. Melise was joined in the semis by fellow 'Liners Steve Friedman (145), John Kaluzny (152), Max Elling (160), Jimmy Schuitema (170) and Kyle Nothnagel (285).

It should be an interesting Saturday, as the P'burg vs. DePaul battle turned a bit ugly when DePaul coach Keith Karsen and some of the Stateliner faithful were jawing back and forth during the matches. This after DePaul coaches were fist-pumping following Daniel Percelay's 5-3 win over P'burg junior Kyle Markus at 106.

DePaul won all three head-to-head meetings vs. the 'Liners in the quarters, as returning champ Matt Noble majored talented freshman Brian Meyer, 10-2, at 126, while Cory Doebel knocked off DJ Wissing, 8-6, at 138. There will be one semifinal clash, as Schuitema faces Spencer Carey at 170.

Unfortunately for P'burg, sophomore Drew Horun (195) was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an ankle injury sustained in Thursday's practice session.

Lenape Valley helped buoy District 2's total with three quarterfinal winners -- Jacob Falleni (106), Nick Palumbo (132) and D.J. Barrett (182). Falleni and Barrett will have District 2 finals rematches on Saturday morning, both against Morris Knolls wrestlers that they beat last Saturday.

Falleni prevailed, 2-1 in the ultimate tiebreaker against Austin Perrault, while Barrett gave Dean Drugac, a 2014 Region 1 champ, his first loss, 9-6.

Phillipsburg was the unanimous choice as Region 1's top team, while DePaul finished as No. 2. Group 2 runner-up Lenape Valley is No. 3, followed by Roxbury, West Morris, Morris Knolls, High Point, Pequannock, Pompton Lakes and Sparta, rounding out the top 10.

P'burg will have two inductees into the Region 1 Hall of Fame on Saturday -- former state champ Bob Zaro and two-time state runner-up and coach Mike Rossetti. In addition, Jefferson's Ken Rossi and Dan Vallimont will be honored during a ceremony prior to the finals.

Wrestling: Five quarterfinals to watch at Region 1

Here are five (actually six, we cheated) quarterfinal matchups you don't want to miss on Friday at Wallkill Valley Regional High School. And that's part of the beauty of only having two mats to focus on.

Quarterfinal action begins at 4 p.m.

106 pounds

4-So. Jacob Falleni (30-4, D2-1), Lenape Valley, vs. 5-Sr. Austin Perrault (27-7, D2-2), Morris Knolls.

Notes: This is a very competitive group at 106, but make sure to catch this one. Falleni, a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex champion, nipped Perrault, 2-1, in the ultimate tiebreaker to claim the District 2 title on Saturday at Randolph High School. Perrault owns wins over four other wrestlers that qualified here, and he was beating Kinnelon's Scott Smith, the No. 3 seed at this weight, when he was decked with seven seconds left on the clock in their Morris County Tournament semifinal matchup.

120 pounds

1-Sr. Mojahed Hamdeh (28-2, D4-1), Wayne Hills, vs. Sr. Dan Kee (19-2, D4-3), Lakeland.
4-Jr. Nick Klinger (30-4, D3-1), Kittatinny, vs. 5-Jr. Joe Renne (31-6, D1-2), Hackettstown.

Notes: This weight class is ridiculously good. Hamdeh vs. Kee is a rematch of last year's 113-pound final, which Hamdeh won, 4-3. The Wayne Hills senior also won, 6-3, vs. Kee this season on Jan 21. Kee avenged two losses this season to DePaul's Damian Maver with a 7-5 win in Wednesday's preliminary round. Klinger won a pair of meetings vs. Renne last season, 12-5 and 8-6, the latter result occurring in the 2014 Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex finals. Renne's only win against Klinger was by technical fall two years ago.

126 pounds

4-Fr. Anthony Mastroeni (29-7, D2-2), Hopatcong, vs. Sr. Dominic Koert (23-5, D3-3), Pope John.
2-Sr. Matt Noble (33-2, D4-1), DePaul, vs. 7-Fr. Brian Meyer (19-12, D1-1), Phillipsburg.

Notes: If you haven't seen him already, Mastroeni is one impressive freshman. Koert is making his first appearance here because he wasn't able to crack the lineup while sitting behind Austin Sisco, a third-place finisher in 2014, his first two seasons at 106 pounds. Last year, an injury forced Koert to miss the postseason. Noble is a returning champion, but Meyer is another fab frosh and tough as nails. Get used to seeing him in this gym. Interestingly, Koert beat Meyer, 4-2, in sudden victory when they met in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament.

170 pounds

3-Jr. Daniel Kilroy (30-3, D4-1), Wayne Hills, vs. 6-Sr. Joey LaBell (31-6, D2-2), Lenape Valley.

Notes: Kilroy made a bit of a surprise run to the finals as the No. 5 seed at 160 last season, upsetting High Point's Tommy Hooker, 10-8, in the semis before finishing second with a 9-2 loss to Morris Knolls' Dean Drugac. LaBell is just plain tough, a wrestler definitely in the mold of his coach and former Lenape Valley standout Doug Vetter, a state runner-up at 189 pounds in 1990.

Wrestling: Region 1 preliminary round recap, tidbits

HARDYSTON TWP. -- With one round of the Region 1 Tournament in the books, let's take a look at some of the highlights from Wednesday night's action:

1. District 1 flexed its muscles by advancing 20 out of 28 to Friday's quarterfinals. Leading the charge was Phillipsburg, which went 5-1 in the preliminary round. Kyle Markus (106), Tyler Agans (120), DJ Wissing (138), Drew Horun (195) and Kyle Nothnagel (285) all reached the quarters, while Tom Kosar (113) bowed out of the tournament after being pinned by Sparta's Garrett Gerndt in 2:39.

Markus earned a hard-fought 5-3 win over Montville's Ronald Rumsby, while Wissing and Nothnagel moved on with first-period pins. Agans posted a 4-1 win over Pope John's Ryan Luchs, while Horun earned a 5-3 decision over Sparta's Zach Herbert.

The Stateliners lead the field with 12 wrestlers in the quarterfinals, followed by DePaul (10). Lenape Valley, Morris Knolls and West Morris all have seven wrestlers in the Round of 8.

District 4 went 14-14 in the prelims, while District was 12-16. District 3, which amazingly didn't have a wrestler from either High Point or Kittatinny win in the opening round, finished 10-18.

2. Sparta continued its resurgence by sending six wrestlers into the quarterfinals, including senior Ian Burke, who scored 13-3 major decision over Montville's Sam Rosensweig at 145 pounds. Burke, the District 3 runner-up, matched two-time Region 1 champion Matt Stoppay (118-25 from 1999-2003) for the all-time wins record at the Sussex County school.

Burke (34-3), who improved to 118-21 overall, can own the top spot with a win over Wayne Hills' Joseph Stambouly on Friday. The Spartans are looking for their first champion since Phil Takacs-Senske won the 189-pound title in 2006.

Gerndt and Nathan Sowers (152) also join District 3 champs Walker Schmitzer (160), Connor Lore (182) and Gavin Lally (220) in the quarters for Sparta, which had five reach the quarters last year.

Keep in mind, this is a program that won one bout in the district tournament from 2010-11.

Crosstown rival Pope John, which hasn't had a champ since 2004, has six in the quarters. Freshman Jake Brown (170) was one of three winners for the Lions in the opening round, along with Christian Deehan (106) and Dominic Koert (126).

Brown recorded a 7-4 decision over Sparta's Al Falco -- his second win over Falco in four days after winning 6-4 in sudden victory in the District 3 semifinals. Falco beat Brown, 3-1, in sudden victory in their first meeting in December.

3. Let's take a look at how the top eight seeds fared in the opening round. It was tough night for the No. 7s, as five lost in the prelims, including Kosar, Kittatinny's Jake Vanwingerden (145) and Belvidere's David Harris (160).

Three No. 6 and No. 8 seeds went by the wayside, while a pair of No. 5 seeds fell.

A No. 2 and a No. 3 from Morris Knolls saw action on Wednesday. Garrett O'Shea, the second seed at 113, advanced by decking Randolph's Nick Rampone, while Dean Drugac, a returning champ, pinned Newton's Benjamin Sibblies in 1:15 at 170.

Mendham's Tim Byrne, also a No. 3 seed, beat High Point's Cliff Rutter, 11-5, at 220 pounds. Rutter was an unlikely qualifier after finishing second in District 3, where he entered the tournament with one victory on the season -- a forfeit.

Nothnagel, along with Kinnelon's Scott Smith (106) and West Morris' David Migliaccio (145), were the other No. 3 seeds to participate in the first round.

4. Lenape Valley enjoyed a strong opening round by going 4-2, led by upper weights Joey LaBell (170), Sam Palumbo (195), Ralph Hall (220) and Rich Fritzky (285).

In all, the Patriots will have seven in action on Friday, as District 2 champs Jacob Falleni (106), Nick Palumbo (132) and D.J. Barrett (182) received byes into the quarters.

Fritzky won a thriller in the last bout to be completed on Wednesday, converting a takedown with five seconds left on the clock for a 3-1 win in sudden victory over Sparta freshman Robbie Gennat. Coach Doug Vetter's squad has as many wrestlers left as High Point (4) and Kittatinny (3) combined.

5. Wallkill Valley gave the home fans something to cheer about as senior 138-pounder Sean Siek advanced to the quarters by turning the tables on Kittatinny's Dylan Minter with a 6-1 victory. On Saturday, Siek dropped a 7-3 decision in their District 3 semifinal matchup.

First-year coach Jeff Churchill, who previously spent many seasons in charge of Morris Knolls' program, said they worked on a game plan all week and Siek executed it to perfection. Senior Patrick Endrikat nearly made it 2-for-2 for the Rangers, but he lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to North Warren's Jack Butrymowicz at 182.

Wallkill did not have a qualifier a year ago, and the school has not produced a champion since former state champion Ryan Callahan won his second in 2010.

Back points

District 1 saw both of its seconds and thirds win in six weight classes on Wednesday -- 120, 132, 138, 182, 195 and 285. Belvidere put four into the quarters as both Merle brothers -- Kevin (170) and Steven (195) -- won in the opening round, as well as Ryan Stephen (182).

There were a total of 17 pins in the first round, which was six fewer than last year. Unlike 2014, most of the falls came early on, as eight occurred in the last eight weights, while there were none from 145 through 160. Stephen had the fastest in 36 seconds over Wayne Valley's P.J. Chak, while Mount Olive's Daniel Colabella was next with one in 45 seconds at 285.

It seemed weird not seeing one Warren Hills wrestler in action in the opening round, as District 1 champions Max Nauta (132) and Andrew Pacheco (285) had the night off. The Blue Streaks have just two qualifiers for the first time since 1993, when Nik and Jason DeBenedetto placed third in the district to earn a trip to Wallkill Valley. Nauta, a three-time finalist, and Pacheco are seeking their second Region 1 titles.

The last time that neither High Point or Kittatinny produced a Region 1 champ was 1999. The 'Cats have three legit title contenders in Dom Gallo (126), Jared Kobis (138) and Jason Gaccione (145), while the Cougars have Nick Klinger (120) and Austin Scrivani (132) among the favorites at their weight classes. The two rivals made history on Wednesday, as neither had a first-round winner for the first time since district thirds started advancing to regions in 1983.

Phillipsburg is the runaway leader with 115 champs on the all-time list. Washington/Warren Hills is next with 53, followed by High Point (43), Randolph (42) and Newton (34).

Speaking of Newton, senior Gus Protogeropoulos is the No. 1 seed at 195 after finishing third at 220 last season. The Braves have produced five champs since 2008, snapping an 18-year drought when Austin Alpaugh and Ed Mattice won in '08. Current assistant coach Ted Sibblies was the school's previous champ in 1989, when he won the Outstanding Wrestler Award en route to finishing second in the state at 130 pounds.

Qualifiers by school

Phillipsburg 13; DePaul 12; Sparta 9; Lenape Valley 8; Montville 8; Morris Knolls 8; West Morris 8; High Point 7; Kittatinny 7; Roxbury 7; Wayne Valley 7; Belvidere 6; Mendham 6; Newton 6; Pope John 6; Jefferson 5; Pequannock 5; Pompton Lakes 5; Randolph 5; Hopatcong 4; Wayne Hills 4; Kinnelon 3; North Warren 3; Butler 2; Hackettstown 2; Lakeland 2; Morris Hills 2; Mount Olive 2; Wallkill Valley 2; Warren Hills 2; West Milford 2; Dover 0; Morris Catholic 0; Vernon 0.

106 pounds

1. Shane Metzler, West Morris; 2. Daniel Percelay, DePaul; 3. Jacob Falleni, Lenape Valley

Notes: Pretty deep weight with Phillipsburg's Kyle Markus and Kittatinny's Mark DiGeronimo, the runner-up and third-place finisher in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament also in the field. Kinnelon's Scott Smith and Morris Knolls' Austin Perrault also in the mix. Metzler looks like the class here, though Percelay rolled to the District 4 title with an 8-1 victory over Smith. Falleni, the HWS champion, is tough on top.

113 pounds

1. Garrett O'Shea, Morris Knolls; 2. Joe Aumann, Hopatcong; 3. Jake Rotunda, Pope John

Notes: O'Shea, who finished third at 106 last season with a 2-0 win over Aumann, was stunned by Aumann, 4-3, in the District 2 finals on Saturday. Aumann also picked up his 100th victory in that rematch. Rotunda is an impressive freshman and should be able to earn the trip to AC.

120 pounds

1. Nick Klinger, Kittatinny; 2Dylan Luciano, West Morris; 3. Troy Stanich, Roxbury

Notes: Just an incredibly deep and talented weight class here. In the top quarter of the draw alone, you have last year's 113-pound champion in Wayne Hills' Mojahed Hamdeh, along with runner-up Dan Kee of Lakeland. Kee will face DePaul's Damian Maver, who has beaten Kee twice, in the opening round on Wednesday. Stanich was the runner-up at 106 last season and beat District 3 champion Klinger, 3-1 in December. Luciano, who has split two bouts with Stanich this season, earned the No. 2 seed after a fourth-place finish at 126 in 2014.

126 pounds

1. Matt Noble, DePaul; 2. A.J. Vindici, Randolph; 3. Dom Gallo, High Point

Notes: This is a tough one to call. Noble is a returning champ at this weight class, while Gallo was a runner-up at 120 last season. Vindici is a two-time state placewinner, but he finished fourth at 120 last year after being knocked off by Gallo in a UTB thriller in the semis. He's in a nice spot up top with a loaded bottom half of the draw. Keep an eye on No. 7 seed Brian Meyer of Phillipsburg. The talented freshman could play spoiler here.

132 pounds

1. Max Nauta, Warren Hills; 2. Austin Scrivani, Kittatinny; 3. William Kui, DePaul

Notes: These picks aren't getting any easier. Nauta, who is six wins shy of passing three-time Region 1 champ Dave Richmond for the all-time record at the Warren County school, is a three-time finalist and a runner-up at this weight last season. Scrivani was third at this weight, dropping  2-1 decision in the semis to eventual champion Mike Derin of High Point. Derin pinned Nauta in the finals. Kui, who finished third the last two seasons, is on a collision course with Scrivani in the semifinals.

138 pounds

1. Jared Kobis, High Point; 2. DJ Wissing, Phillipsburg; 3. Eric Friedman, Mendham

Notes: What a shame that the unbeaten Kobis and Friedman are in the top half of the draw. Nonetheless, that should be a great semifinal should it happen. Kobis (27-0) reached the semifinals two years ago, but he was derailed by a shoulder injury. He also missed most of last season with a hand injury. Friedman (35-0) is a returning runner-up at this weight who went on to place eighth in the state tournament. Wissing, the No. 6 seed, is in a great spot down below.

145 pounds

1. Jason Gaccione, High Point; 2. Steve Friedman, Phillipsburg; 3. Ian Burke, Sparta

Notes: Gaccione won this weight class as a sophomore and he finished second last season with a 3-2 loss to DePaul state champion David McFadden. Gaccione has beaten Friedman twice this season, including a 7-1 decision in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex finals. Friedman did not make it past the quarters in two previous appearances, but he's wrestling extremely well right now. Burke, the No. 4 seed, is eager for a rematch with Gaccione after a 14-11 loss in the District 3 finals.

152 pounds

1. Brandon Kui, DePaul; 2. John Kaluzny, Phillipsburg; 3. Tommy Miller, Roxbury

Notes: Kui (36-3) made everyone take notice last season by winning the 138-pound title as a freshman. He's a strong bet to repeat. Montville's Anthony Fano, who finished fourth at 138 a year ago, also is in the top half of the draw. Kaluzny, who rolled to the District 1 title after starting the season as the backup for the Stateliners, dominated in a 7-3 win over Miller when their teams met in the Group 4 semifinals two weekends ago.

160 pounds

1. David McFadden, DePaul; 2. Max Elling, Phillipsburg; 3. Craig Roumes, Roxbury

Notes: Without a doubt, this would be the most anticipated final. McFadden (39-0) is bidding to become just the fourth wrestler in this region to capture four titles. The slick four-time District 4 champion, who has also placed second and sixth in the state tournament, owns a 161-8 career mark. Elling (35-2) is looking for his first Region 1 title and a return trip to AC after finishing fourth at 152 last season.

170 pounds

1. Jimmy Schuitema, Phillipsburg; 2. Luke Bohn, Jefferson; 3. Daniel Kilroy, Wayne Hills

Notes: Schuitema (34-3), who was suspended from competing in the postseason last year, is seeking his second title after winning as a sophomore. Bohn has finished third twice here, including last year at 152, beating Elling, 7-5. Kilroy (30-3), the No. 3 seed, made an inspired run to the finals at 160 last season, where he lost a 9-2 decision to Morris Knolls' Dean Drugac. Lenape Valley's Joey LaBell is lurking as the No. 6 seed.

182 pounds

1. Nick DePalma, DePaul; 2. D.J. Barrett, Lenape Valley; 3. Dean Drugac. Morris Knolls

Notes: Tough at the top here with DePalma (31-6), a returning runner-up at this weight, along with Drugac (34-1), a champ at 160 last season. Barrett (34-1), who was third here last season, has been turning heads all season and he made a statement by handing Drugac his first loss in the District 2 finals.

195 pounds

1. Gus Protogeropoulos, Newton; 2. Patrick Daly, Pequannock; 3. Aaron Flitcroft, Mendham

Notes: Protogeropoulos (31-2) has made a seamless drop from 220, where he was a third-place finisher last season. The senior became the eight wrestler at his school to reach the 100-win mark in the District 3 finals. Daly (30-3), who is the No. 2 seed, has beaten Flitcroft, the District 1 champ, three times this season, including a 7-0 decision in the Morris County Tournament quarterfinals. Keep an eye on Lenape Valley's Sam Palumbo and Phillipsburg's Drew Horun, the Nos. 6 and 7 seeds. They are capable of pulling off an upset.

220 pounds

1. Robert Melise, Phillipsburg; 2. Scott Lavelle, DePaul; 3. Gavin Lally, Sparta

Notes: Tough upper half of the draw with Lavelle (36-4) as the No. 1 seed and Lally (33-1), the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex champ, sitting in the No. 4 spot. Lally's lone loss this season is to Protogeropoulos in a dual meet, which he avenged a few days later in the county finals. Lavelle dropped a 4-3 decision to Protogeropoulos in last year's third-place match. Melise (31-6) has been solid since dropping from 285, beating Mendham's Tim Byrne, 12-3, in the District 1 finals.

285 pounds

1. Andrew Pacheco, Warren Hills; 2. Kyle Nothnagel, Phillipsburg; 3. Kevin Lewis, High Point

Notes: Pacheco scored a no-doubt 7-0 decision over Nothnagel to avenge an earlier loss to the Stateliner and win a third District 1 title on Saturday. Those two seem destined for a third meeting, but Pacheco has been tough in this gym, winning the title as a junior and reaching the finals as a sophomore. Lewis made a smart move going 285 and winning the District 3 title after competing at 220 most of the season.

Wrestling: Region seeding format misses the point

Seems like we have these discussions at this time each season, but those that follow this blog know that I have never been a fan of the way regional tournaments are seeded in this state.

Well, after once again sitting in on the process at Region 1 on Monday, it's high time for the powers to be to start recognizing what a disservice they are doing to the wrestlers and this great sport. One look at the way things shook out at 120 and 138 pounds tells you that the current way is not the best way, and it's not even close. The system, which was created by wrestling committee member and former coach Doug Bower, possesses inherent flaws that arise each year in a few classes.

At 120, all three wrestlers from District 4 wound up in the same quarter of the draw. Wayne Hills senior Mojahed Hamdeh is the No. 1 seed, while Lakeland's Dan Kee and DePaul's Damian Maver will battle on Wednesday night in the opening round at Wallkill Valley Regional High School. The season ends for the loser of that one.

Just a few days ago, Hamdeh, a returning Region 1 champ, won the district title, beating Maver, 4-2 in overtime. Maver reached the finals with a sound 7-0 win over Kee, a Region 1 runner-up last season who reached the second round of state wrestlebacks in Atlantic City.

So after battling it out on Saturday and establishing a pecking order, the trio is forced to bang heads again in the first two rounds of regions. Totally unfair.

At 138, Mendham's Eric Friedman and High Point's Jared Kobis are on a collision course for the semifinals on Saturday. Two of the best kids in the state -- Friedman was an eight-place finisher last season -- and who are both unbeaten, are the Nos. 1 and 4 seeds, respectively. DePaul's Cory Doebel and Pequannock's Alex Zangrilli are above Kobis, despite having 15 and six losses, respectively.

So how does this happen?

For those unfamiliar with the seeding process, the seconds and thirds from each of the four districts in the region are listed on the board and seeded 1 through 8. The top four based on points and criteria (previous advancement plays a huge role here) are then moved over with the four district champions. Only now, the points are out of the picture and those eight wrestlers are seeded on previous region and state advancements, as well as any head-to-head meetings in that group that have taken place during the season. Best wins and winning percentage serve as criteria when a wrestler has nothing else on merit.

The pre-seed at 138 with prior furthest advancements was as follows: 1. Friedman (state 8th), 2. Doebel (RWB2, R 2v3)), 3. Kobis (RWB2), 4. Nigro (RWB1, R 2v3), 5. Zangrilli (R2v3, twice), 6. Wissing (best win over S8), 7. Liberato (best win over RWB2), 8. Minter (best win RWB1).

Zangrilli jumped up to No. 2 after decking Doebel in the District 4 finals, pushing Doebel to No. 3 and Kobis to No. 4, since Doebel and Kobis did not meet this season.

Oddly, this process in many other cases has rendered the district tournaments virtually meaningless, Case in point at 120, where Maver's win over Kee on Saturday was lost in the shuffle.

What's the answer?

My whole argument for years is to just seed everyone based on their point totals, which include prestige totals for previous placements and have already factored in head-to-head results. And the big thing is, the higher a wrestler's total is results from being better against stronger competition over a season or career. Prestige points are built into the total, taking into account the furthest advancement resulting from any state, region or district medals.

"Pennsylvania uses [strictly] points," said Newton coach Eric Bollette, who serves as a District 3 representative at the Region 1 seeding meeting. "We are rewarding kids twice for beating someone."

During a phone conversation on Monday night, High Point coach John Gardner said he would vote for seeding based on points alone. The disturbing thing is that the point totals this year were off due to missing information on Track wrestling or incorrect prestige points. For example, Lenape Valley's Sam Palumbo was in the system as a Region 1 fourth-place finisher, when in fact he only got to the second round of wrestlebacks in 2014. That means every one of his opponents got the wrong points for those matchups.

Seeding strictly on points won't cure every bad draw or seed -- someone will always have a gripe -- but I believe it's the fairest way and it's certainly better than what he already have in place. We went to this format some time ago because coaches were circumventing the old format of seeding the four district champs, and then placing the runners-up and thirds on the opposite side of the bracket. In a case of a strong district, the runner-up to the No. 1 for example, could come out against the No. 3 seed unless the coaches' votes dictated otherwise. Well, coaches cut deals for votes and there was a lot of underhanded activity on that front.

Based solely on points, here is how 120 and 138 would have shaken out on Monday:

120 -- 1. Dylan Luciano, West Morris; 2. Nick Klinger, Kittatinny; 3. Troy Stanich of Roxbury; 4. Joe Renne, Hackettstown; 5. Trevor Morales, Newton; 6. Kee; 7. Hamdeh; 8. Connor Meytrott, Montville; 9. Maver; 10. Tyler Agans, Phillipsburg; 11. Ryan Luchs, Pope John; 12. Max Halkenhauser, Morris Hills.

138 -- 1. Friedman; 2. Kobis; 3. Zangrilli; 4. DJ Wissing, Phillipsburg; 5. Michael Nigro, Morris Knolls; 6. Doebel; 7. Sean Siek, Wallkill Valley; 8. Joey Ioffredo, Hopatcong; 9. Dylan Minter, Kittatinny; 10. Elijah Navarro, Wayne Valley; 11. Daniel Jin, Montville; 12. Matthew Liberato, West Morris.

As you can see, things are a little different. At 120, Maver is still in the 8-9 matchup, but he's away from Hamdeh and Kee. It's a tough weight, so there isn't a place to hide. But the coaches of those three wrestlers would be a little more accepting of this bracket than they were on Monday.

At 138, Friedman are Kobis are the 1-2, which they should be. That is a potential state semifinal type of bout that will likely go off in the Region 1 semis. Zangrilli decking Doebel in the District 4 finals is the result that mucked things up here. Kobis was penalized because he just one region appearance and no state criteria after battling injuries the last two seasons.

Kobis (27-0), a recognized elite talent, has a point total of 316, while Zangrilli's is 206. Doebel is at 182.5. They have a combined total of 21 losses. Kobis is 67-4 overall, with three defeats directly attributed to injuries. As a freshman, he dropped a heartbreaker in the ultimate tiebreaker to two-time state placewinner Ryan Pomrinca of North Hunterdon in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex finals.

It's a travesty that 138 is the way it is. Nothing can change that now, but let's get this right for future tournaments. Use the points and bag the rest. If we're about getting the best guys separated in the draw, which is the goal, then do the right thing. These kids deserve it.

Wrestling: Districts 1, 2, 3 and 17 by the numbers

One tournament down and two more to go. As we gear up for Regions 1 and 5 this week, let's take a look at some of the noteworthy happenings from the district tournaments that house teams from the Open Mike area.

100 -- Delaware Valley hit the century mark for champions as Cory Lightner and Kyle Schlittler were No. 99 and 100, respectively in capturing their first District 17 titles at 170 and 182 pounds. Since moving over from District 1 in 2001, the Terriers have a produced 44 winners, nearly half of the program's total number of champs. After a school record of seven champs in 1993,  Del Val crowned a total of eight champions combined in the last seven years in D1. Those battles with Phillipsburg were fierce back in the day.

148 -- Number of career wins for North Hunterdon ace Ryan Pomrinca (148-12), who picked up his third District 17 title on Saturday with a 14-3 major of Del Val sophomore Matt Kolonia in their 126-pound final to match Del Val's Mike Pongracz (148-16 from 2009-13) atop the all-time wins list in the H-W area. Pomrinca, a two-time state placewinner, is perhaps the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex area's best hope for a coveted state championship with P'burg junior Brandon Paetzell sidelined.

7 -- Phillipsburg stormed its way to a 42nd team championship behind seven champions in the District 1 Tournament at Mount Olive. Seniors Max Elling (160) collected his third title and Jimmy Schuitema (170) won his second. Elling became the 34th wrestler in program history to win at least three championships. Schuitema became the Stateliners' all-time wins leader with a 16-4 major over Belvidere's Kevin Merle in the finals. Schuitema (121-24) moved past four-time district champion Luke Grassi (120-32 from 2004-08), while Elling picked up his 120th victory with a 13-4 major over West Morris' Caleb Isemann in the finals. 'Liners winning their first titles on Saturday were Brian Meyer (126), John Kaluzny (152), Yann Ondele (182) and Robert Melise (285), while Steve Friedman (145) picked up his second.

400 -- High Point senior Jason Gaccione won his third District 3 championship at Kittatinny and in the process he joined older brother Joe and their uncle John Gardner, who is the head coach of the 'Cats, as three-time champions. It's an amazing amount of success in one family as the trio has combined for 400 victories, nine district titles, eight region championships and five state medals. With a career mark of 137-21, Jason Gaccione needs just two more wins to take sole possession of second place on the school's all-time list behind Nick Francavilla (156).

19 -- Pomrinca is just the 19th wrestler in the storied North Hunterdon program to win at least three district titles and the first since Andrew Cosgrove (2001-03). The Lions are closing in on 200 champs as a program, as Derek Ciavarro (145), Brian Smolinsky (152) and Michael Sicola (160) helped raise the total to 195, while leading North to its 11th team championship and second in four years. Head coach Tim Flynn won a district title for P'burg in 1994, while his assistant Jason Hawk won three for the Stateliners from 1986-88.

8 -- Lenape Valley advanced eight wrestlers to the Region 1 Tournament with a strong showing in the District 2 Tournament at Randolph. Winning titles for the Patriots were Jacob Falleni (106), Nick Palumbo (132) and D.J. Barrett (182). That's three straight years with three district titles for coach Doug Vetter's program, which has produced at least one winner every year since being shut out in 2003.

13 -- Phillipsburg will boast a tournament-high 13 wrestlers at Region 1 when action begins on Wednesday with the seconds vs. thirds. In addition to the seven D1 champions, Kyle Markus (106), Tom Kosar (113), Tyler Agans (120), DJ Wissing (138), Drew Horun (195) and Kyle Nothnagel (285) all qualified for the 'Liners, who have 115 region champs. In addition, P'burg has produced at least one district champion every year but 1950 and '55 -- a streak of 60 straight tournaments.

100 -- Three Sussex County wrestlers and one from Warren County reached the century mark for wins on Saturday. Over in District 3, High Point's Dom Gallo won his 100th in the semifinals en route to the 126-pound title, while Newton's Gus Protogeropoulos followed suit by decking Sparta's Zach Herbert to win the 195-pound championship. In District 2, Joe Aumann reached the mark by pulling off a 4-3 victory over Morris Knolls state placewinner Garrett O'Shea in the 113-pound final. In District 1, Warren Hills heavyweight Andrew Pacheco picked up his 100th in the District 1 semis.

3 -- Seniors Max Nauta and Pacheco joined the list of three-time champions for Warren Hills with their victories at 132 and 285, respectively, in District 1. Nauta is the Blue Streaks' first four-time finalist since Dave Richmond won four in a row from 2003-06. There have only been nine wrestlers to win three or more titles for Warren Hills, minus the nine who competed for Washington High School, which became known as Hills for the 1967-68 season. Pacheco joined Johnston Oberly and Dan Slack as the only Streaks to win three or more titles in the heavyweight division.

Wrestling: Spartans win D3 title; 'Cats crown four

HAMPTON -- Gavin Lally knows where Sparta's wrestling program once was and can feel proud to be a part of the revitalization. And the senior 220-pounder gets to celebrate two championships to boot.

Lally was one of three champions that helped lead Sparta to the District 3 team title on Saturday at Kittatinny Regional High School. It's the first team crown for the Spartans since 1983, and its their fourth overall (also winning in 1979 and '82). The three champs are also the school's most district winners in a year since producing five in '83.

"We were at rock bottom [in 2010 and '11 when the Spartans won a total of one district bout in those two seasons]," said an elated Frank Battaglia, who also took home Coach of the Year honors. "That was tough. But what a great ride it's been with this senior class. I can't thank them enough. This isn't the end, but it's a start."

In addition to Lally, seniors Walker Schmitzer (160) and Connor Lore (182) also won their first district titles. Garrett Gerndt (113), Ian Burke (145), Zach Herbert (195) and Robbie Gennat (280) all finished second.

Lally started off the proceedings under a bit of pressure after Battaglia informed his wrestler that he needed to win by a fall in order to clinch the team title. In fact, Sparta entered the finals with a pretty insurmountable 19-point lead over second-place High Point. Nonetheless, Lally needed just 38 seconds to flatten Cliff Rutter.

"Coach said I needed to get six and I did what he asked me to do," said Lally, who also won his first Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex title in January. "This feels awesome. We can't get enough of this. I'm so happy for coach Battaglia. Hopefully this program keeps building and growing."

High Point, which had won seven of the previous nine team titles while combining with Kittatinny to earn the last 16 since Jefferson won the team race in 1998, produced a tournament-best four champions, including senior Jason Gaccione, who won a wild 14-11 decision over Burke, a 2014 champ, at 145 pounds.

Gaccione (33-2) was seemingly in control with a 9-3 lead in the second period, when Burke countered a duck-under attempt and threw Gaccione to his back with a headlock. Burke nearly had a pin, but Gaccione signaled for injury time and referee Dave Marotta halted the bout.

Burke was awarded a four-point nearfall to tie it at 9, but Gaccione escaped to take a 10-9 lead after two periods and iced the win with two takedowns in the third. Unfortunately, the bout ended with a chorus of boos from fans who felt the bout should not have been stopped with Gaccione on his back.

"[Burke] has been on a high and feeling pretty good," said Battaglia of the NYU-bound senior who has been the face of the program the last four years with four district medals and three finals appearances. "Maybe this is a good loss. He's a great kid academically and a great leader."

Gaccione, a four-time finalist, is the 12th High Point wrestler to win at least three district titles, joining older brother Joe (2008-09, '11) and uncle John Gardner (1988-90), who is the program's head coach. The trio has combined for 400 wins, nine district titles, eight region titles and five state medals.

Senior Dom Gallo (126), who recorded his 100th win in the semifinals, and unbeaten junior Jared Kobis (138) both won their second titles, while junior Kevin Lewis (285) picked up his first. The Wildcats also had two unlikely finalists in freshman Sawyer Fenlon (132) and sophomore Cliff Rutter (220), the No. 7 seed who entered the tournament at 1-2 -- the win being a forfeit. Although Fenlon was the No. 2 seed, he came in at 2-6.

Kittatinny, which matched High Point with seven Region 1 qualifiers, finished third overall in the team standings behind champions Mark DiGeronimo (106), Nick Klinger (120) and Austin Scrivani (132).

Scrivani (33-1) became just the 11th at his school to win three titles as he decked Fenlon in 3:28, while the other two won their first titles for the Cougars, who extended their streak of having at least one champion since being shut out in 1993.

Newton senior Gus Protogeropoulos collected his second straight title and his 100th career win in style by pinning Herbert in 1:16 at 195. Protogeropoulos (31-2), who is the Braves' first repeat winner since Ed Mattice in 2008-09, will be the favorite in Region 1 next week after finishing third last year.

"I don't really look at rankings. I just want to make it [to states in Atlantic City] again," said Protogeropoulos, who dropped from 220 after HWS and is now 100-35 overall. "I just want to open up and keep moving forward. Anyone can win."

Pope John's Jake Rotunda also made a little school history with a hard-fought 4-2 win in the ultimate tiebreaker against Gerndt. Rotunda, who escaped with 25 seconds left in the third period to force OT, got a reversal with 22 seconds left in UTB to win and become the first freshman champion for the Lions since former state champ Brian Unkert won the first of his four district titles in 1987.

Jefferson's Luke Bohn, who also won a third district title, was named the Outstanding Wrestler after scoring a technical fall over Pope John freshman Jake Brown in the 170-pound final.
