Wrestling: Braves battle for sixth in Boresch Duals

NEWTON -- It was a tough way to start a Saturday morning for Newton's wrestling team, but the Braves finished on a bit of a positive note with a hard-fought 36-29 loss to Toms River North in the fifth-place match at the 14th annual Henry Boresch Duals.

Newton (4-3), which was minus a heavyweight and sophomore 106-pounder Nathan Fitt (illness) for the nightcap, opened the tournament by winning just three bouts in a 49-16 loss to Kingsway before rebounding with a 44-25 win against Cranford in consolation semifinals.
Newton travels to Kittatinny on Tuesday for a key divisional match.

"We thought the match against Kingsway was going to be a closer match, but it didn't go our way," said Newton senior 220-pounder Luke Fischer, who improved to 12-0 with three wins on the day.

Paulsboro won its second straight Boresch Duals title with an impressive 37-17 victory over South Plainfield in the championship match.

The loss of Fitt, who recorded pins against Kingsway and Cranford, but had to leave between rounds, really hurt against Toms River North, as Louie Gagliardo recorded an 11-2 major against Newton backup Mason Leen at 106. Had Fitt been able to win that tossup bout, the match would have ended in a 32-32 tie with the Braves winning on bouts (8-6). Coach Eric Bollette was also forced to forfeit at 285 pounds since sophomore Jacob Tonking left the team earlier this week. The heavyweight bout against Toms River North also would have rated as a tossup.

"It happens. It's unfortunate," Bollette said of not having Fitt in the nightcap. "After the way the day started, we came out flat against a nice Kingsway team, and you can't do that. We wrestled well [vs. Toms River North], who is ranked Top 20 in the state."

Newton stormed back from a 24-9 deficit through seven bouts by winning five of the next six, triggered by senior Matthew Rosa's 11-0 major at 132. After senior Michael Freda's 12-4 major at 145, junior Trevor Aughenbaugh added a surprising 3-0 decision at 152 to get the Braves within 10, before back-to-back wins from seniors Wyatt McCarthy and Nick Brigante at 160 and 170 made it 30-29 with one bout to go.

But Toms River North senior Jack Oleske sealed it with a pin of Matt Somers in 5:32.

"I'm very pleased with the effort," said Bollette, whose team will now gear up for Tuesday's clash at Kittatinny in a match that has significant implications in the NJAC Freedom Division race. "We won seven bouts, and we had some big wins from Aughenbaugh and Brigante. We wanted to win that last one, but now we get ready for next week."

Fischer registered a major decision and two pins, including a fall in 4:44 against Toms River North's John O'Donnell. The returning state qualifier also had a 23-second pin at 285 against Cranford and a 12-1 major of Kingsway's Sean Horner.

"We knew we didn't wrestle well [against Kingsway]," said Fischer, a tough leg rider who used a power half to flatten O'Donnell, a returning district fourth-place finisher. "We reset our minds and knew we had to come out hard [against Cranford]. We really pulled through for that third match."

Fischer is eager for next weekend's Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament, as he will be a title favorite after finishing third as a junior.

"I'm excited for it. It's probably one of the toughest tournaments," said Fischer, now 79-33 overall. "The last three years, I came up short. Hopefully, I can come back and win it."

Newton, which was coming off a 44-16 win over Jefferson on Thursday, fell behind early against Kingsway (5-5), as the Dragons won four of the first five bouts starting with a key 7-4 decision at 170, where Kevin Pandorf bested Brigante in a clash between district fourth-place finishers.

Kingsway, which dropped a 54-12 decision to No. 2 seed South Plainfield in the semifinals, took a 16-4 lead against Newton after a forfeit at heavyweight. Fischer got the Braves on the board at 220 and Fitt registered a 28-second pin at 106 to make it 16-10, before the South Jersey school regained control by winning the next six bouts.

Returning state placewinner McKenzie Bell helped fuel Kingsway's run with a pin at 120, along with Jake Gentile's pin of JoJo Lotruglio at 126, a 7-3 decision by state qualifier Finnegan McFadden at 132 and a pin from region runner-up Cheney Kinner at 138.

McCarthy, a seventh-place finisher in the state tournament last season, recorded Newton's third and final win with a first-period pin at 152.

Paulsboro (73-6 over Caldwell) and South Plainfield (55-12 over Cranford), the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds, cruised to lopsided wins in the opening round, while Hanover Park, which dropped a 61-12 decision to Paulsboro in the semifinals, scored a thrilling 41-35 victory over Toms River North with a pin in the final bout of the 5-4 matchup.

Hanover Park bounced back with a 34-33 win over Kingsway, which lost a team point in the final bout, in the third-place matchup.
