Wrestling: Spartans, 'Liners, Terriers claim titles

What a huge night for Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex as six teams won sectional titles, including Sparta, which pulled out a 29-25 win over Old Tappan on Friday in the North 1, Group 3 final.

Junior Robert Gennat pinned in the final bout at 195 pounds to give the Spartans (19-8) their third sectional title overall and its first since 2000. They advanced to face South Plainfield on Sunday in the Group 3 semifinals at Toms River North.

Sparta, which lost to Paramus in the 2015 final, was one of three Sussex County schools to win titles, as High Point (North 1, Group 2) and Kittatinny (North 1, Group 1) won their 25th and 21st championships, respectively.

In addition to Gennat's heroics, Garrett Stewart (132) and Paddy Finnegan (170) recorded key decisions, while Zach Herbert (285) and Chris Hwang (120) came up with clutch bonus points early on to help Sparta jump out to a 17-4 lead through five bouts.

Terriers pull off three-peat

Adding another chapter to one of the state's most storied postseason rivalries, Delaware Valley rode a fast start to a 36-23 win over Raritan in the Central Jersey, Group 2 final in Alexandria Township.

The Terriers (21-3), who knocked off the Rockets (26-3) for a third straight year in the final to claim the program's 17th title overall, will next face Collingswood on Sunday in a rematch of last year's Group 2 semifinal. Del Val won that one, 33-24, before taking a tough 29-28 loss to Emerson-Park Ridge in the final.

Del Val, which now owns a 9-5 edge in the all-time series, jumped out to a 16-0 lead after the first four bouts against Raritan, capped by Josh LaDuca's pin at 285 pounds, much to the delight of a raucous home crowd, according to Terriers coach Andy Fitz, now 3-4 overall in sectional finals. Junior Kyle Lightner also provided a key 10-0 major over Ethan Wolf at 220.

In what was reported to be an ugly incident in the 10th bout of the night, Raritan's Christian Sookdeo was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct against Del Val ace Matt Kolonia at 138. The Rockets, who trailed 23-14 heading into the bout, also lost three team points.

Blue Streaks' run ends

Warren Hills closed the gap, but it wasn't enough in a 33-22 loss to Cranford in the North 2, Group 3 final.

The Streaks (16-9), who dropped a 48-21 decision to the Cougars (20-0) in a regular-season meeting on Jan. 28, did a better job of limiting the bonus points in the rematch. But they could not reverse two key decisions from the previous match at 132 and 138.

Senior Matt Valli lost a 5-3 decision in a rematch with Chris Scorese, while Zach Nauta lost 10-4 to Tom DiGiovanni. In addition, Cranford avenged a loss from the first meeting as Anthony Ramierez scored a 6-2 win over Brody Oberly. Ramierez dropped a 10-6 decision last time out.

Warren Hills, which was seeking its sixth sectional title and first since 2007, fell to 5-7 all-time in title matches, including 1-3 under coach Jarrett Hosbach. The Streaks have reached the sectional finals in three of the last five years.
