LIVE blog: Phillipsburg at Warren Hills

Thanks for joining and remember to hit refresh often!

We're live at Warren Hills Regional High School as the Blue Streaks get set to host the Stateliners in what promises to be great Skyland Conference tilt. Varsity match scheduled for 7 p.m.

Varsity teams are meeting for the 65th time since the series began in 1948. P'burg leads, 50-14. Warren Hills' last wins in the series came during the 1989-90 season -- 32-31 at The Pit in a regular-season dual and 34-30 in the North 2, Group 3 sectional final at Warren Hills. That team remains the only one to ever beat P'burg in a sectional match.

'Liners have won 25 straight against the Streaks coming into this one.

Interesting matchup tonight, as there are several bouts that could go either way. The consensus is that this match could be very tight or a blowout in favor of the 'Liners. I have it 31-17 in favor of the visitors. Bouts to keep in mind are 120, 132, 138, 145, 160, 170, 182 and 195.

We're starting at 126 pounds. That will make120 the final bout and that should be a good one between Phillipsburg's Andrew Kaluzny and Warren Hills' Chris Greenwald.

Phillipsburg wrestlers just ran out onto the mat for warmups. Tim Vanderhoof is the referee for tonight's match.

Warren Hills crowd getting amped up. This place is packed, shades of 1990! Streaks come out to the strains of Alan Parsons Projects "Sirius Eye in the Sky."

No Brandon Cruse tonight for the Streaks. The senior 152-pounder is reportedly ill.

Intros and anthem now, match to begin shortly.

Phillipsburg comes into this one at 6-2. Warren Hills is 10-2.

126 pounds
Jr. Joe Kratochvil (11-8) d. Fr. Max Elling (11-6), 4-2. (Warren Hills 3-0)

We're underway at 126. Phillipsburg won the toss and will be home on the even bouts.

Kratochvil in deep on a single but they go out of bounds. No two. Kratochvil gets a takedown with 21 seconds left in the first. Leads 2-0 after one period.

Kratochvil on defense to start the second period. Elling defeated Kratochvil, 9-4, at Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex last Saturday. Elling riding tough with legs but no points under a minute left. Second period ends with Kratochvil leading 2-0.

Elling on bottom to start the third. Stall warning on Kratochvil. A little quick considering Elling rode the whole second period. Elling escapes to make it 2-1, Kratochvil almost immediately and eventually gets the takedown for a 4-1 lead. Under 40 seconds left. Great bout.

Post questions the call and gets a bench warning. Elling escapes to make it 4-2 and that's the way it ends. Big win for Warren Hills.

132 pounds

Fr. Jimmy Schuitema (15-5) p. Sr. KC Wanamaker (13-6), 6:53 OT. (P'burg 6-3)

What a first period. Wanamaker gets the opening takedown and gets caught in a Peterson to tie it at 2. Then, Wanamaker hits two Petersons of his own for seven points before giving up a late reversal. He leads 9-4 after one period.

Schuitema starts on bottom and gets a reversal with under a minute left to cut the deficit to 9-6.

Wanamaker wisely chooses neutral to start the third. Schuitema gets a takedown with 30 seconds left to make it 9-8 and a stall warning on Wanamaker. Vanderhoof bangs him again with one second left to force OT. Warren Hills not happy with that call.

Schuitema gets the takedown and steps over to eventually get the pin in 6:53. Wow, what a huge swing!

P'burg leads 6-3 after two.

138 pounds

Jr. Anthony Johnson (6-2) d. Jr. Kevin Bundschuh (4-5), 4-3. (Pburg 9-3)

No score after one period. Bundschuh takes bottom to start the second period. Still trying to catch my breath from the last bout.

Locked hands is the call on Johnson. Bundschuh gets a free point for a 1-0 lead, 1:05 to go. Warren Hills needs this one. Second period ends with Bundschuh nursing a 1-0 advantage.

Johnson on bottom to start the third period. Johnson gets a reversal to go up, 2-1, and gets a stall warning. Bundschuh reverses for a 3-2 with 45 seconds left. Johnson counters with his own to go up 4-3 with 20 seconds left. Johnson hangs on for a 4-3 win. Big blow to Warren Hills' chances.

145 pounds
So. Jake Kocsis (11-6) d. So. Nate Detrick (9-4), 5-0. (P'burg 12-3)

Kocsis gets the opening takedown 20 seconds in. He leads 2-0 after one period.

Kocsis on bottom to start the second period. Escapes with 1:14 left to go up 3-0. Gets another takedown for a 5-0 lead under a minute to go. That's the way the second period ends.

Detrick on bottom to start the third. Stall warning on Detrick. Vanderhoof not winning over the home fans tonight. Kocsis rides out for a 5-0 win.

152 pounds
Sr. V.J. Delmonico (14-8) d. So. Evan Butka (4-5), 1-0. (Pburg 15-3)

Scoreless first period. Butka defers and Delmonico takes bottom to the start the second period. He escapes quickly for a 1-0 lead.

Second period ends on their feet. Butka takes down to start the third. Not a lot of action here. No backs, Vanderhoof counted twice but not consecutively. And that's the way it ends. 1-0.

160 pounds
Sr. Joe Moyer (10-10) p. So. Ryan Ostir (5-7), 5:25. (Pburg 21-3)

Moyer gets the opening takedown for a quick 2-0 lead. Ostir escapes with 53 seconds left. Moyer gets his second takedown for a 4-1 lead.

Moyer down to start the second period, ahead by three. He gets a reversal and Ostir escapes, 6-2 in favor of the District 1 champ Moyer. Another takedown and escape. It's 8-3 with a minute to go. Ostir nearly hits a huge headlock with 30 seconds, settles for the takedown. Moyer up 8-5 after two periods.

Ostir takes neutral to start the third. Moyer gets the takedown to go up, 10-5. Ostir gets a reversal with Moyer riding high, 10-7. And then gives it right back, 12-7 Moyer 40 seconds left. And gets the fall!

170 pounds
Sr. Devin Grade (11-7) p. Jr. Xavier Adetula (8-9), :59. (Pburg 27-3)

Adetula hits a four-pointer out of the gate. Grade reverses him and sticks Adetula in 59 seconds! Lot of action there and the 'Liners are on their way to a 26th straight win in this series.

182 pounds
Sr. Shaun Maloy (11-8) d. Sr. Ryker Kern (9-6), 3-1. (Pburg 30-3)

Blood time out. P'burg students serenade birthday boy Charlie Bowlby. Happy Birthday Chuck!

Scoreless first period. Maloy takes bottom to start the second period. Maloy with the early escape and 1-0 lead. Rematch of HWS fifth-place bout, won 3-2 by Kern. Blood time again for Maloy with 35 seconds on the clock. Takedown for Maloy with 10 seconds left to go up 3-0. 'Liners quicker to the punch tonight.

Kern on bottom to start the third. He's out 17 seconds in to make it, 3-1. Still 3-1 with 34 ticks on the clock. And that's the way it ends. P'burg winning all the close ones. Been awhile since Kratochvil's big win -- and only win for the Streaks thus far.

195 pounds
Sr. Derek Pierson (7-6) d. So. Ryan Witner (7-12), 3-0. (Pburg 33-3)

Scoreless first period and neither close to a takedown.

Witner chooses down to start the second period. Pierson won, 3-2, when they met at HWS. Period ends with a scoreless tie.

Pierson on bottom to start the third, Witner lets him up right away. Pierson gets a takedown with 14 seconds left as Witner attempts a cement job. Final, 3-0.

220 pounds
Sr. Brandon Hull (17-3) d. Sr. Dan Smith (15-3), 5-0. (Pburg 36-3)

Good one here. Rematch of the HWS final, won 1-0 by Hull. Potential District 1 and Region 1 final. Hull gets the takedown he couldn't get last time, 55 seconds in for a 2-0 lead. Hull nearly catches Smith for backs, but Smith wiggles out of trouble. First period ends.

Hull takes defense to start the second period. For those scoring at home, P'burg is winning the takedown battle, 9-5. Not a lot of prowess from either team in the neutral position. Smith slips off the top and Hull gets the reversal for a 4-0 lead with 40 seconds left. Hull takes a 4-0 lead into the second period.

Smith takes top to start the third. Hull escapes to go up 5-0. Lots of dancing on their feet with 30 seconds left. And Hull hands smith another loss.

285 pounds
Sr. Anthony Pare (18-3) md. Fr. Andrew Pacheco (7-3), 8-0. (Pburg 40-3)

Interesting matchup here. The senior against the heralded freshman. Pare won the HWS title and Pacheco finished fifth. Pare gets the opening takedown with 1:32 to go. Pare really impressed me at the counties, had my vote for OW. He can move for a big man. Wow, turns Pacheco at the buzzer for two backs. A few more seconds and that might have been six.

Pare on bottom to start the second period. He leads 4-0. Reversal for Pare with 51 seconds left and he has a commanding lead. Pare comes up lame and takes an injury timeout. He's OK and we continue.

Pacheco takes neutral to start the third. A little Dancing in the Street here as both appear tired. Pare gets a takedown at the edge with 29 seconds to go, he's up 8-0. And that's how it ends.

106 pounds
Fr. Max Nauta (17-2) md. Fr. Steve Friedman (11-10), 11-3. (Pburg 40-7)

Rematch here of the HWS semifinals, won 4-0 by Nauta. He gets a quick takedown for a 2-0 lead. Nauta tough on top with legs, great hips. Turns Friedman for three backs in the final 5 seconds for a 5-0 lead.

Nauta on bottom to start the second. He nearly gets a reversal with 22 seconds left, but potentially dangerous gives him one point. He leads 6-0 to end the second period.

Friedman opts for neutral to start the third. Gets the takedown with 56 seconds left, he's down 6-2. Escape for Nauta with 30 seconds left. Nauta converts his second takedown for a 9-2 lead and lets Friedman up right away. Nauta gets another takedown to go up 11-3 and he'll get the major. Impressive.

113 pounds
Jr. Zach Fisher (16-7) p. So. Tai Adetula (17-3), 4:32. (Pburg 46-7)

Adetula gets a quick takedown and Fisher reverses to tie all 10 seconds in. Fisher has Warren Hills blood in him. His parents, Dawn and Alan, are proud graduates ... Class of 1987. You can't get this in depth coverage anywhere else, folks. First period ends 2-2.

Fisher escapes to take a 3-2 lead to start the second and converts a takedown to go up 5-2. Gets a turn here and has Adetula in trouble. Three backs and a commanding 8-2 lead. We go to the third period with Fisher in control.

Adetula takes neutral, his best position, to start the third. Fisher gets another takedown and the pin in 4:32. All 'Liners tonight folks.

120 pounds
Jr. Andrew Kaluzny (7-6) md. Sr. Chris Greenwald (13-3), 10-2. (Pburg 50-7)
After a takedown by Kaluzny, Greenwald reverses to tie. Kaluzny escapes and gets a takedown plus backs for a 7-2 lead.

Kaluzny on bottom to start the second. He escapes, 8-2. We go the third. Greenwald, with a killer cradle, takes top to start the third. Kaluzny gets a reversal with 10 seconds left, 10-2 final and an exclamation point. Thanks for following, see you next time.

  2. Wow this one sounds great too. What would a WH vs Pb match be without the crowd not liking some calls. Stalling calls are always frustrating.
