Region 1 rankings (updated for Jan. 22)

106 pounds

1. Sr. Jan Rosenberg, Morris Knolls
2. So. Tyler Hyrcak, Wayne Valley
3. Fr. Peter Lipari, Lenape Valley
4. Sr. John Torppey, High Point
5. Fr. A.J. Vindici, Randolph

Others to watch: So. Bryan Damon, Jefferson; So. Devon LaFranco, Roxbury; Fr. Steven Friedman, Phillipsburg; Fr. Max Nauta, Warren Hills; Jr. Joey Spaziani, Hopatcong; Fr. William Kui, DePaul; So. Austin Sisco, Pope John; Fr. Dylan Luciano, West Morris; Fr. Michael Glasser, Montville.

Notes: No change among the top five. Vindici (18-0) is still unbeaten with wins over LaFranco and Damon, but hasn’t wrestled anyone above him. Torppey has spent most of his time at 113, so we’ll see where he goes in a few weeks. Lipari (16-1), whose only loss is to Montville’s Nick Lizza, 5-2, at 113, beat Spaziani, 6-4, on Thursday. Both weighed in at 113 and Lipari raced out to a 4-0 lead. Nauta majored Friedman, 11-3, on Friday – his second win over the Stateliner in a week.

113 pounds

1. Fr. David McFadden, DePaul
2. So. Nick Lizza, Montville
3. Jr. Zach Fisher, Phillipsburg
4. So. Matt Ritchie, North Warren
5. So. Tai Adetula, Warren Hills

Others to watch: Jr. Cory Fleming, West Morris; Jr. Vince Pallone, Mendham; Fr. Ian Burke, Sparta; Jr. Collin Grimm, High Point; Jr. Stephen Caserta, Roxbury.

Notes: New No. 1 here as McFadden knocked off Hunterdon Central’s Dylan Nace, 6-4, on Sunday in the All-Star Invitational. Nace is the HWS champ and placed fourth in Region 5 last year. Fisher decked Adetula on Friday, so he moves up a spot and the Blue Streak drops to No. 5. Fleming appears to be struggling of late, beating Caserta, 6-5, on Thursday, and losing to Randolph’s Matt Vozzo, 14-9, up at 120.

120 pounds

1. Sr. Chaz Coppa, Pequannock
2. Sr. Joe Cruz, Hopatcong
3. Fr. Mike Derin, High Point
4. Fr. Glenn Haines, Lenape Valley
5.  Jr. Andrew Kaluzny, Phillipsburg

Others to watch: Sr. Chris Greenwald, Warren Hills; Sr. Corey Forlenza, Montville; So. Lou Carusillo, DePaul; So. Ronald Spera. Mount Olive; So. Kevin Hernandez, Roxbury; Jr. Dave Popek, Kittatinny; So. Matt Vozzo, Randolph.

Notes: The No. 5 spot is mess right now. Popek beat Kaluzny, 3-2, at Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex, and Vozzo, 8-1, at the Caldwell Tournament. Greenwald beat Popek, 4-2, on Dec. 30. Kaluzny thumped Greenwald, 10-2, on Friday. Haines also beat Popek, 1-0, at HWS. I’ve been impressed with Kaluzny of late and he gets the nod for now.

126 pounds

1. Jr. Sam Tareky, Wayne Valley
2. Jr. Matt Benvenuto, Lenape Valley
3. Sr. Kevin Gocklin, Vernon
4. Jr. Joe Kratochvil, Warren Hills
5. Fr. Max Elling, Phillipsburg

Others to watch: Jr. Jesse Thorsen, Belvidere; Jr. Connor McHugh, High Point; Sr. Evan Loveland, Newton; Fr. Eric Friedman, Mendham; So. Johnny Hayes, North Warren; So. Jake Legotte, Roxbury; Jr. Jake Struble, Wayne Hills.

Notes: Benvenuto lost to Hopatcong’s Joe Cruz, 6-4 in OT, on Thursday. Good match for both guys. Kratochvil avenged an 8-4 loss to Elling with a 4-2 decision on Friday. The Blue Streak, who has wrestled up most of the year and was majored by Benvenuto at HWS, slides in here at No. 4.

132 pounds

1. Sr. Dylan Thorsen, Belvidere
2. Sr. Steven Churchill, Newton
3. Sr. R.J. DeGeorge, Pequannock
4. Jr. Brandon Carcuffe, West Morris
5. Fr. Jason Gaccione, High Point

Others to watch: Sr. James Rivera, Mount Olive; Jr. Tyler Kozimor, Hackettstown; Sr. Johnny Walker, Mendham; Fr. Jim Schuitema, Phillipsburg; Sr. KC Wanamaker, Warren Hills; Fr. Tom Murphy, Kittatinny.

Notes: Good news here as Churchill is expected back this week after missing time with a concussion. Thorsen (17-1) continues to roll after a 6-4 win in OT against Bound Brook’s Jeison Arias. Gaccione could face Murphy on Thursday in the big dual meet showdown between those Sussex County rivals.  Schuitema erased a 9-2 deficit and eventually decked Wanamaker in OT on Friday. This is one deep class.

138 pounds

1. So. Nick Romyns, Kittatinny
2. Jr. Nick Matthews, West Morris
3. Sr. Ray Timpani, Randolph
4. Sr. Steven McKowen, Morris Knolls
5. Jr. Anthony Johnson, Phillipsburg

Others to watch: Jr. A.J. Bongiovanni, Hopatcong; Jr. Mason Ryzoff, North Warren; So. Jonathan Patane, Roxbury; Jr. Joe Hocking, Wallkill Valley; Sr. Tyler Walker, Vernon; Jr. Brandon Rothman, Hackettstown; Sr. Ryan Higgins, Jefferson; Jr. Kevin Bundschuh, Warren Hills; So. Niko Grello, Newton.

Notes: Matthews beat Timpani, 3-2, on Tuesday, so he vaults up to No. 2, since McKowen lost to Timpani earlier this month. Bongiovanni was upset by Grello, 2-1 in OT3, on Tuesday. Grello then lost, 6-4 in OT to Hocking. No. 5 here is a real mess, too. Going with Johnson in that spot. The ’Liner got a bad draw by hitting Delaware Valley state qualifier Derek Zehnbauer early and getting pinned at HWS. Four days later, Johnson lost to Zehnbauer, 2-1. Johnson also beat North Hunterdon’s Mike Ciavarro earlier this month, so he’s as good as any right now.

145 pounds

1. Sr. Tim Garripoli, Roxbury
2. Sr. Jon Arbelaez, Morris Knolls
3. Sr. Joe Emering, Pope John
4. Sr. Jacob Aloia, Mendham
5. Sr. Rick Levens, Randolph

Others to watch: Sr. Tyler VanDyke, Pequannock; Fr. Luke Bohn, Jefferson; Sr. Devin Sullivan, Morris Hills; Jr. Greg Wallace, West Morris; Jr. Ryan Ward, Vernon; Sr. Chris Olivo, Lenape Valley; Sr. Sean Mullin, Butler; Sr. Andrew Gundlah, Pompton Lakes; Sr. Ryan Schaible, Dover.

Notes: Aloia beat Levens, 2-1, on Thursday so he jumps into the rankings for the first time this season. Bohn (16-2) is on the cusp here, earning a technical fall win over Sullivan on Thursday. Emering (12-3) has one loss at 145 to Voorhees state qualifier Ronnie Honickel in the HWS finals. His other two losses are to Belvidere’s Nathan Dow, 5-1, at 160 and South Plainfield’s Dylan Painton, 6-3 on Dec. 17. He’s a solid No. 3 here.

152 pounds

1. So. Dillon Artigliere, Roxbury
2. Sr. Clarke Moynihan, Kittatinny
3. Jr. Parker Meytrott, Montville
4. Sr. V.J. Delmonico, Phillipsburg
5. Jr. Patrick VanDuyne, West Milford

Others to watch: Sr. Johnny Berry, Lakeland; So. Sam Button, Mendham; Sr. Brett Secor, Pompton Lakes; Sr. Dylan Offerding, Mount Olive; Jr. Sean Rodgers, Randolph.

Notes: Berry dropped down this past week. He lost, 8-2, to VanDuyne on Jan. 11 so he stays on the outside for now.

160 pounds

1. Sr. Kevin Button, Mendham
2. So. Kieran Gerrity, Kittatinny
3. Sr. Nathan Dow, Belvidere
4. Sr. Michael Staufenberger, North Warren
5. Fr. Nick DePalma, DePaul

Others to watch: Sr. Andrew LaBell, Lenape Valley; Sr. Joe Moyer, Phillipsburg; Sr. D.J. Wagner, Morris Hills; Sr. John Malazinsky, Morris Knolls.

Notes: Dow took on Voorhees state runner-up Jadaen Bernstein and lost, 11-2, on Friday in a dual.

170 pounds

1. Sr. Ryan Harrington, Mendham
2. Sr. Keith Lemengello, Pequannock
3. Sr. Steve Secor, Lakeland
4. Jr. John Sickles, West Morris
5. Sr. Kevin Pettinger, High Point

Others to watch: Jr. Richard DiZenzo, West Milford; So. Anthony Landberg, Wayne Valley; Sr. Devin Grade, Phillipsburg; Jr. Jake Brook, Kittatinny; Jr. KC Apkarian, Butler; Sr. Max Shirhall, Lakeland; Jr. Keith Lopez, Pompton Lakes; Jr. Michael Burns, Morris Knolls.

Notes: Pettinger returned to the lineup this past week and picked up a couple of wins.

182 pounds

1. Sr. Nick Dellaferra, Wayne Valley
2. Jr. Evan Bray, Belvidere
3. Jr. Luke Foukas, Pequannock
4. Jr. Michael Rettino, Morris Knolls
5. Sr. Dan Hauck, North Warren

Others to watch: Sr. Ryker Kern, Warren Hills; So. Kyle Stoll, High Point; Jr. Steve Dallicardillo, Jefferson; So. Garrett Armstrong, Kittatinny; Sr. Zack Levy, Vernon; Sr. Jimmy VanKluyve, Wayne Hills; Jr. Hunter McConnell, Butler; Sr. Shaun Maloy, Phillipsburg; Sr. Alex Muller, Sparta.

Notes: Maloy avenged a 3-2 loss to Kern in the HWS consolations with a 3-1 decision in their dual meet on Friday. We could see Armstrong-Stoll on Thursday.

195 pounds

1. Sr. Jake Connelly, Newton
2. So. Dylan Wunder, Kittatinny
3. Jr. Jon Fazio, Lakeland
4. Jr. Ronny Cobilich, Montville
5. Sr. Kyle Smith, Morris Knolls

Others to watch: So. Jesse Cornwell, Vernon; Jr. Stephen Arthur III, Roxbury; So. Ryan Witner, Warren Hills; Sr. Derek Pierson, Phillipsburg.

Notes: Cobilich bumped up to 220 and lost, 4-1, to Gunther Wassong of High Point on Thursday in a dual. Smith picked up a pair of wins and Connelly got two forfeits against Hopatcong and Wallkill Valley. Tempted to move Smith up because of that slim loss to Cobilich was in December. Holding steady at No. 5 for now.

220 pounds

1. Sr. Brandon Hull, Phillipsburg
2. Sr. Dan Smith, Warren Hills
3. Sr. Alex Trani, Wayne Valley
4. Sr. Jack Baumgaertel, Pompton Lakes
5. Jr. J.B. Lawson, Belvidere

Others to watch: Jr. William Wenzel, West Milford; Sr. Dave Tlatelpa, Vernon; Jr. Pete Andrich, Mount Olive; Jr. Robert Levine, Wayne Hills.

Notes: Hull earned his second win over Smith in five days, 5-0, on Friday. They stay a solid 1-2. Nothing else to note here.

285 pounds

1. Sr. Mike Spencer, Pequannock
2. Sr. Jermaine Eluemunor, Morris Knolls
3. Sr. Charles Foster, Morris Hills
4. Sr. Andrew Grosser, Pompton Lakes
5. Sr. Anthony Pare, Phillipsburg

Others to watch: Sr. Jon Gemeinhardt, Vernon; Jr. Chris Longyhore, North Warren; Fr. Andrew Pacheco, Warren Hills; Sr. Zak Krulan, West Morris; Jr. Ryan Appleby, Belvidere; Jr. Brendon Narbone, Lakeland.

Notes: Pare beat Pacheco in convincing fashion, 8-0, on Friday. Spencer (21-0) picked up a pair of forfeits – raising his season total to five with 14 pins and two decisions.

Note: Wrestlers are ranked at their lowest competition weight. Results reported to NWCA Scorebook and matches covered by Open Mike are used to help determine the rankings. This list will be updated each Monday during the regular season up until the postseason tournaments.

  1. Two thoughts:

    1. Nauta was got off to a slow start in the H/W/S final, and steadily came back. I think he is very, very close to being in that top five category, maybe even belongs in it.

    2. Shuitema is another that might surprise. 132 looks pretty loaded so tough to tell.

  2. Right on as usual Chip. Schuitema is at a very stacked weight and he hasn't beaten anyone ranked, so he's out for now but he could very well be in soon, same with Nauta, who was dominated by Lipari at HWS.

    1. Agree on Schuitema, but I thought Nauta was dominated by Lapari the first two periods, but in the third Nauta was making a steady comeback. I even thought another thirty seconds and it might have ended differently. It is tough when there are so few kids that standout head and shoulders above the rest - bunch of excellent kids that are separated by inches in talent not feet.

  3. Nauta deseves to be right there and will likely win his district. However, the Lipari /Nauta match ended with Lipari reversing Nauta to his back.

  4. The 106-pound class, other than Rosenberg, has no studs. There are five to six others that could make a case to be ranked. And they're all close.
