Region 1 Rankings (updated for Jan. 9)

106 pounds

1. Sr. Jan Rosenberg, Morris Knolls
2. So. Tyler Hyrcak, Wayne Valley
3. Sr. John Torppey, High Point
4. Fr. A.J. Vindici, Randolph
5. So. Bryan Damon, Jefferson

Others to watch: So. Devon LaFranco, Roxbury; Fr. Steven Friedman, Phillipsburg; Fr. Max Nauta, Warren Hills; Jr. Joey Spaziani, Hopatcong; Fr. William Kui, DePaul; So. Austin Sisco, Pope John; Fr. Dylan Luciano, West Morris.

Notes: New No. 1 here as state placewinner Rosenberg (9-1) dropped for the Henry Boresch Duals. Vindici (12-0) still unbeaten entering the week and owns wins over Damon (8-2), 1-0 in UTB, and LaFranco (10-2), 8-2. Nauta (12-1) making a push for top-five consideration and will be in the mix for a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex title on Saturday, along with Torppey. Luciano (11-4) posted a big 2-1 win over North Hunterdon’s Matt Moncourtois, a Region 5 qualifier, on Jan. 5.

113 pounds

1. So. Nick Lizza, Montville
2. Fr. David McFadden, DePaul
3. So. Matt Ritchie, North Warren
4. Fr. Peter Lipari, Lenape Valley
5. Jr. Vince Pallone, Mendham

Others to watch: Jr. Zach Fisher, Phillipsburg; So. Tai Adetula, Warren Hills; Fr. Ian Burke, Sparta; Jr. Collin Grimm, High Point; Fr. David Migliaccio, West Morris; Jr. Stephen Caserta, Roxbury.

Notes: Lizza moves to the top spot after Rosenberg dropped to 106. Note to Montville, please update your results on NWCA Scorebook. Thanks. Lipari may drop to 106 for the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament on Saturday and would be in the hunt for a title. The freshman is that good, beating Pallone, 7-3, on Saturday. Lizza gave Lipari his only loss to date, 5-2. Ritchie decked Pallone on Saturday, so Lipari follows at No. 4 and Pallone drops two spots. Ritchie and Pallone have split this season as they go round-and-round. McFadden majored Pallone on Dec. 27. Fisher next in line there. Adetula (12-1) quietly having a nice season after a 14-18 freshman campaign. Burke is for real as evidenced by an 8-3 win over Grimm on Wednesday.

120 pounds

1. Sr. Chaz Coppa, Pequannock
2. Fr. Mike Derin, High Point
3. Sr. Corey Forlenza, Montville
4. Jr. Cory Fleming, West Morris
5. Jr. Andrew Kaluzny, Phillipsburg

Others to watch: Sr. Chris Greenwald, Warren Hills; So. Lou Carusillo, DePaul; Fr. Glenn Haines, Lenape Valley; So. Ronald Spera. Mount Olive.

Notes: Coppa (16-0) still on top here, but Derin leaps into the rankings for the first time at No. 2, following his pin of Southern state placewinner Zach Wilhelm on Saturday. Derin is a legit rookie. Greenwald (12-2) drops out for now, but he could see Kaluzny and/or Haines in the HWS Tournament this weekend. Fleming beat Greenwald, 7-4, in the John Goles on Dec. 27.

126 pounds

1. Sr. Avelino Jacinto, Kittatinny
2. Jr. Sam Tareky, Wayne Valley
3. Jr. Matt Benvenuto, Lenape Valley
4. Sr. Joe Cruz, Hopatcong
5. Jr. Jesse Thorsen, Belvidere

Others to watch: Fr. Eric Friedman, Mendham; So. Justin Pidoto, Warren Hills; Fr. Max Elling, Phillipsburg; So. Johnny Hayes, North Warren; So. Jake Legotte, Roxbury; Sr. Kevin Gocklin, Vernon.

Notes: Jacinto (5-2) lost by injury default and on a disqualification this season. He’s nursing a bad shoulder, so he may sit out this weekend in the HWS Tournament.  Tareky (12-0) still rolling and pinned Cruz earlier this season. Pidoto is still injured and won’t compete in the HWS. However, Benvenuto, Cruz, Thorsen and Elling will all battle it out there.

132 pounds

1. Sr. Dylan Thorsen, Belvidere
2. Sr. Steven Churchill, Newton
3. Sr. R.J. DeGeorge, Pequannock
4. Jr. Tyler Kozimor, Hackettstown
5. Jr. Brandon Carcuffe, West Morris

Others to watch: Sr. Johnny Walker, Mendham; Fr. Jim Schuitema, Phillipsburg; Sr. KC Wanamaker, Warren Hills; Fr. Tom Murphy, Kittatinny; Fr. Jason Gaccione, High Point; Sr. James Rivera, Mount Olive.

Notes: Looking forward to potential Thorsen-Churchill bout in the HWS on Saturday. Could see several matchups there with most of the guys here in the tri-county area. DeGeorge (11-0) stuck Lenape Valley’s Benvenuto on Saturday. Walker made his season debut recently, up from 112 a year ago where he won a District 1 title. He bumped up and earned a nice 5-4 win over North Warren’s Mason Ryzoff, the No. 5 at 138, at the Patriot Duals.

138 pounds

1. So. Nick Romyns, Kittatinny
2. Sr. Ray Timpani, Randolph
3. Sr. Steven McKowen, Morris Knolls
4. Jr. Nick Matthews, West Morris
5. Jr. Mason Ryzoff, North Warren

Others to watch: So. Jonathan Patane, Roxbury; Jr. Joe Hocking, Wallkill Valley; Sr. Tyler Walker, Vernon; Jr. Brandon Rothman, Hackettstown; Sr. Ryan Higgins, Jefferson; Jr. Kevin Bundschuh, Warren Hills.

Notes: Timpani moves to No. 2 following a 4-2 win over previous No. 1 McKowen on Jan. 4. Romyns is on top by virtue of a 3-2 win over Timpani on Dec. 17. Close quarters between that trio. Matthews (8-1) also lurking here, but has yet to face the top three. Ryzoff lost 3-1 to Romyns a few weeks ago. Three of Patane’s four losses are to Timpani, Ryzoff and R.J. DeGeorge.

145 pounds

1. Sr. Tim Garripoli, Roxbury
2. Sr. Jon Arbelaez, Morris Knolls
3. Sr. Tyler VanDyke, Pequannock
4. Jr. Josh Sibblies, Newton
5. Sr. Rick Levens, Randolph

Others to watch: Fr. Luke Bohn, Jefferson; Sr. Devin Sullivan, Morris Hills; Sr. Jacob Aloia, Mendham; Jr. Greg Wallace, West Morris; Jr. Ryan Ward, Vernon.

Notes: Garripoli (12-0) the clear No. 1 here. He beat Aloia, 8-3, last week. Sibblies dropped over the weekend and lost, 5-3, to Arbelaez at the Henry Boresch Duals. Van Dyke, who beat Sibblies, 5-4, also dropped and slips in at No. 3. Sullivan has two losses to Arbelaez, 7-2 and 5-3. Levens enters at No. 4. Upon further review of his slate, a 3-1 win over Hunterdon Central’s Tyler Cote is better than Bohn’s 7-0 loss to Cote. He lost, 5-0, to Central’s David Fenton, who lost to Sibblies earlier this season, so sounds right all-around.

152 pounds

1. So. Dillon Artigliere, Roxbury
2. Sr. Clarke Moynihan, Kittatinny
3. Jr. Parker Meytrott, Montville
4. Sr. V.J. Delmonico, Phillipsburg
5. Jr. Patrick VanDuyne, West Milford

Others to watch: Sr. Joe Emering, Pope John; So. Sam Button, Mendham; Sr. Brett Secor, Pompton Lakes; Sr. Dylan Offerding, Mount Olive; Sr. Nick Monteverdi, Jefferson; Jr. Sean Rodgers, Randolph.

Notes: No changes here from last week. Artigliere (12-0) with wins over Moynihan, VanDuyne, VanDyke and Button this season. Emering and VanDyke waiting for their chance to crack the top 5.

160 pounds

1. Sr. Kevin Button, Mendham
2. So. Kieran Gerrity, Kittatinny
3. Sr. Nathan Dow, Belvidere
4. Sr. Michael Staufenberger, North Warren
5. Sr. Johnny Berry, Lakeland

Others to watch: Sr. Joe Moyer, Phillipsburg; Sr. D.J. Wagner, Morris Hills; Sr. John Malazinsky, Morris Knolls.

Notes: Button (10-0) still on top here, beating everyone behind him except Berry, as those two haven’t met this season. Button beat Staufenberger for the second time, 7-1, over the weekend at the Patriot Duals.

170 pounds

1. Sr. Ryan Harrington, Mendham
2. Sr. Keith Lemengello, Pequannock
3. Jr. John Sickles, West Morris
4. Sr. Kevin Pettinger, High Point
5. Jr. Richard DiZenzo, West Milford

Others to watch: Sr. Andrew LaBell, Lenape Valley; Sr. Steve Secor, Lakeland; So. Anthony Landberg, Wayne Valley; Sr. Devin Grade, Phillipsburg; Jr. Jake Brook, Kittatinny.

Notes: Lemengello (14-2) has two losses to state champion Harrington, who is expected to drop to 160 at some point. Sickles beat Pettinger, 3-1 in OT, earlier this season. Pettinger is a sleeper this weekend at the HWS Tournament.  DiZenzo (11-2) beat LaBell, 6-4, earlier this season.

182 pounds

1. Sr. Nick Dellaferra, Wayne Valley
2. Jr. Evan Bray, Belvidere
3. Jr. Luke Foukas, Pequannock
4. So. Kyle Stoll, High Point
5.  Jr. Steve Dallicardillo, Jefferson

Others to watch: So. Garrett Armstrong, Kittatinny; Jr. Stephen Arthur III, Roxbury; Sr. Zack Levy, Vernon; Sr. Jimmy VanKluyve, Wayne Hills.

Notes: Dellaferra gave Bray his only loss, pinning the Belvidere junior in 17 seconds at the Hopatcong Invitational. Bray owns a 5-2 win over Foukas and is seeking a title this weekend at HWS. Stoll beat Dallicardillo, 7-6, in a dual.

195 pounds

1. Sr. Jake Connelly, Newton
2. Jr. Jon Fazio, Lakeland
3. So. Jesse Cornwell, Vernon
4. Jr. Ronny Cobilich, Montville
5. Sr. Kyle Smith, Morris Knolls

Others to watch: So. Dylan Wunder, Kittatinny; Sr. Jack Baumgaertel, Pompton Lakes.

Notes: Connelly keeps rolling as the solid No. 1 here, beating Smith, 3-1, at the Henry Boresch Duals. Fazio jumps up to No. 2 after a 7-4 win over Cornwell this weekend. Cornwell owns a win over Cobilich, who beat Smith, 4-2, this season. Needless to say Nos. 2 through 5 are all close. Baumgaertel (11-3) has spent most of his time at 220 this season, but does have two matches at 195. He has some nice wins, including decisions over Belvidere’s J.B. Lawson and Vernon’s Dave Tlatelpa, contenders at 220.

220 pounds

1. Sr. Brandon Hull, Phillipsburg
2. Sr. Dan Smith, Warren Hills
3. Sr. Alex Trani, Wayne Valley
4. Jr. J.B. Lawson, Belvidere
5. Jr. William Wenzel, West Milford

Others to watch: Sr. Dave Tlatelpa, Vernon; Jr. Pete Andrich, Mount Olive; Jr. Robert Levine, Wayne Hills.

Notes: No movement here. Hull, Smith and Lawson will all battle this weekend at the HWS Tournament.  Trani (11-0) still unbeaten and owns a 3-2 win over Lawson in the Hopatcong Tournament finals.

285 pounds

1. Sr. Mike Spencer, Pequannock
2. Sr. Andrew Grosser, Pompton Lakes
3. Sr. Jon Gemeinhardt, Vernon
4. Jr. Anthony Pare, Phillipsburg
5. Fr. Andrew Pacheco, Warren Hills

Others to watch: Sr. Jermaine Eluemunor, Morris Knolls; Jr. Chris Longyhore, North Warren; Sr. Zak Krulan, West Morris; Jr. Ryan Appleby, Belvidere; Sr. Charles Foster, Morris Hills.

Notes: Spencer (16-0) went the distance for the first time this season, a 4-0 decision over Longyhore in the Patriot Duals. Spencer decked Longyhore earlier this season. Gemeinhardt, Pare, Pacheco and Longyhore will be at the HWS Tournament this Saturday. It should be fun to watch them go at it.

Note: Wrestlers are ranked at their lowest competition weight. Results reported to NWCA Scorebook and matches covered by Open Mike are used to help determine the rankings. This list will be updated each Monday during the regular season up until the postseason tournaments.
