Wrestling: Region 1 individual rankings

106

1. Fr. Joe Aragona, Pope John (D3)
2. So. Michael Caso, West Morris (D1)
3. Fr. Cody Harrison, Warren Hills (D1)
4. So. Cullen Day, Phillipsburg (D1)
5. Jr. Ronald Rumsby, Montville (D2)

Others to watch: Mason Godfrey, Jefferson (D3); Quinn Melofchik, Belvidere (D1); Chris Hwang, Sparta (D3); Devin Flannery, High Point (D3); Dom DiGena, Mendham (D1); John Tesoriero, Roxbury (D2); Hunter Davis, Wayne Valley (D4); Christopher Costiglia, Lakeland (D4); Aidan Broderick, Wayne Hills (D4); Andrew Joskowitz, Kinnelon (D4).

Notes: Aragona (22-0) still the one to beat here. Harrison (14-4) is heading for a clash with Day on Friday. Flannery beat Godfrey, 9-6, on Wednesday. Rumsby, who has been wrestling at 113 a lot of late, replaces Godfrey at No. 5. With the Morris County Tournament on tap this weekend, we could see some rematches.

113

1. Jr. Daniel Percelay, DePaul (D4)
2. Sr. Kyle Markus, Phillipsburg (D1)
3. Jr. Mark DiGeronimo, Kittatinny (D3)
4. So. Kyle Wulff, Warren Hills (D1)
5. Fr. Scott Jarosz, Roxbury (D2)

Others to watch: Christian Deehan, Pope John (D3); Randy Wyble, Butler (D4); Joe Carmichael, Pequannock (D4); Scott Finnis, Randolph (D2); Ryan Richards, Jefferson (D3); Maverick Liebl, High Point (D3); Marcus Bitetto, Sparta (D3); Peter Tringali, Mendham (D1); Cole Drozjock, Wayne Valley (D4); Phil Trovato, Montville (D2).

Injury time: Jacob Falleni, Lenape Valley (D2).

Notes: Wulff seems to be coming on, dropping an 8-7 decision to Hunterdon Central's Hunter Graf, a Region 5 runner-up last season. Markus, DiGeronimo, Graf and Falleni finished ahead of Wulff, who pinned Deehan, at the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament. Markus (14-6) and Wulff could meet on Friday.

120

1. Jr. Shane Metzler, West Morris (D1)
2. So. Jake Rotunda, Pope John (D3)
3. So. Alex Carida, Hackettstown (D1)
4. Sr. Garrett Gerndt, Sparta (D3)
5. So. Codey O'Rourke, Warren Hills (D1)

Others to watch: Connor Murphy, Wayne Valley (D4); Perry Maio, Kittatinny (D3); Steve Pocze, Pequannock (D4); Evan Vazquez, Roxbury (D2); Anthony Zungoli, Wayne Hills (D4); Nick Gentile, Montville (D2); Ryan Hanlon, Mount Olive (D1); Thomas Masucci, Mendham (D1).

Injury time: Tom Kosar, Phillipsburg (D1).

Notes: Rotunda (20-2), a Region 1 finalist last season, beat Gerndt for the fourth time in two years, 6-1, on Wednesday to help Pope John inch closer to its first conference title in 30 years. Rotunda and Metzler could meet again on Tuesday, Feb. 2 in a scheduled dual meet. Metzler (17-0) scored a 7-3 win in the John Goles Invitational finals on Dec. 27.

126

1. Sr. Troy Stanich, Roxbury (D2)
2. Sr. Garrett O'Shea, Butler (D4)
3. Jr. Matt Valli, Warren Hills (D1)
4. Fr. Robert Garcia, Pope John (D3)
5. Sr. Joe Renne, Hackettstown (D1)

Others to watch: Damian Maver, DePaul (D4); Nick Cassidy, Belvidere (D1); Jared Inglett, Wayne Hills (D4); Calvin Brook, Kittatinny (D3); Chris Shrieks, Jefferson (D3); Kyle Tino, Phillipsburg (D1); Dylan Hanlon, Mount Olive (D1); Grant Gerndt, Sparta (D3); Ray Smaha, Lenape Valley (D2); Scott Smith, Kinnelon (D4).

Notes: O'Shea (20-0) still rolling along, as is Valli (17-0). Oddly, O'Shea took a forfeit at 138 against Belvidere, which had Cassidy, a District 1 champion last season, receive a forfeit at 126 on Jan. 16. Garcia (19-3) has gone 6-0, including an 11-2 major of Gerndt on Wednesday, since a 4-2 loss to O'Shea on Jan. 16.

132

1. Sr. Nick Klinger, Kittatinny (D3)
2. So. Anthony Mastroeni, Hopatcong (D2)
3. So. Shane Kobis, High Point (D3)
4. Jr. Richard Reimers, Roxbury (D2)
5. Jr. Anthony Rua, Wayne Hills (D4)

Others to watch: Wyatt McCarthy, Newton (D3); Tyler Agans, Phillipsburg (D1); Connor Meytrott, Montville (D2); Shane Murphy, Mount Olive (D1); Alex Winant, Mendham (D1); Mark Bohn, Jefferson (D3); Ryan Luchs, Pope John (D3); Luke McFadden, DePaul (D4); Jake Hickey, Lenape Valley (D2); Joe Brown, West Milford (D4); Jack Carroll, Lakeland (D4).

Injury time: Brandon Paetzell, Phillipsburg (D1).

Notes: Big week for Klinger (18-1), who posted wins over Mastroeni (3-1 in sudden victory OT on Wednesday) and Bohn (6-4 on Friday). Klinger enters the week just five wins shy of becoming the 15th wrestler at his school to reach 100 for a career. Rua (13-4) has been flying under the radar with losses to Wilfredo Gil of Ramapo (7-4 and 3-2 on Jan. 9), Sean Conley of Hanover Park -- state qualifiers last season -- and Owen McClave of Toms River South -- fifth at 120 in AC. Kobis is coming on, dropping a tough 4-1 decision in the OT tiebreaker to Renne on Monday.

138

1. Sr. Austin Scrivani, Kittatinny (D3)
2. Jr. Chris Grecco, Pompton Lakes (D4)
3. Sr. Michael DeClario, Kinnelon (D4)
4. Sr. Jayson Parisi, Morris Knolls (D2)
5. Jr. Kade Loughney, West Morris (D1)

Others to watch: Nick Giordano, Newton (D3); Sean Finnegan, Sparta (D3); Shannon Grogan, North Warren (D1); Leo Flesche, Vernon (D3); Joe Daddario, Montville (D2); Tom Benway, Pequannock (D4); Sean Almgren, Randolph (D2).

Injury time: Zach Nauta, Warren Hills (D1); Aaron Merkey, Lenape Valley (D2); Dominick LaRusso, Roxbury (D2).

Notes: DeClario (15-3) checked in at 132 once in 18 matches, so he stays in here for now. He beat Benway, 4-1, on Wednesday. Grecco (23-0) moves up one spot, a 7-6 win over Mastroeni being his biggest victory to date. Parisi (16-4), who has been knocking on the door here, scored a 6-0 win over Loughney on Wednesday. LaRusso (10-4) was injured on Jan. 16 and hasn't returned to the lineup.

145

1. Sr. Jared Kobis, High Point (D3)
2. Jr. Nick Palumbo, Lenape Valley (D2)
3. So. Brian Meyer, Phillipsburg (D1)
4. Sr. Alex Zangrilli, Pequannock (D4)
5. Jr. Dominic Fano, Montville (D2)

Others to watch: Anthony Carida, Hackettstown (D1); Cole Nagle, Vernon (D3); Jonathon Borgognoni, Newton (D3); Michael Roumes, Roxbury (D2); Jake Vanwingerden, Kittatinny (D3); Anthony Rispoli, Pope John (D3); Jake DeLuca, Newton (D3); Chris Schlegel, Mendham (D1).

Notes: Missed a chance to see Kobis (14-0) vs. Meyer on Saturday with the blizzard. Fano (18-1) scored a 7-2 win over Schlegel on Wednesday. Palumbo (16-4) majored Carida, 11-3, on Wednesday. Nagle (20-1) continues to push for a spot in lower half of the rankings, his only loss by fall to Palumbo in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex quarterfinals. Zangrilli, who was ranked at 152, dropped to 145 on Wednesday. Palumbo beat Zangrilli, 7-0, on Monday.

152

1. Sr. Anthony Duardo, North Warren (D1)
2. Sr. Tommy Miller, Roxbury (D2)
3. So. Marco Gaita, West Morris (D1)
4. Jr. Joey Schiele, Morris Hills (D2)
5. Sr. Edward Marucci, Montville (D2)

Others to watch: Troy Navarino, Mendham (D1); Connor McClellan, Mendham (D1); Sal Puglisi, Pompton Lakes (D4); Dylan Minter, Kittatinny (D3); Shane Connolly, Jefferson (D3); Dean Zindaki, Wayne Valley (D4); Ryan Madsen, Lakeland (D4); Craig Blumeling, West Milford (D4); Ryan Weston, DePaul (D4).

Notes: Navarino, who was ranked at 160, dropped to 152 last week and lost a 3-0 decision to Marucci (16-2), who enters at No. 4 after a 4-2 win over Zangrilli. Marucci's losses are to Newark Academy's Steve Bonsall and Lenape Valley's Nick Palumbo. Gaita, who has a 7-6 loss to Miller, jumps up a few spots. Schiele (16-1) also jumps up one place.

160

1. Sr. Craig Roumes, Roxbury (D2)
2. Sr. Christian Dalcais, West Milford (D4)
3. Sr. DJ Wissing, Phillipsburg (D1)
4. Sr. Caleb Isemann, West Morris (D1)
5. Sr. Alex Zevits, Montville (D2)

Others to watch: Dean Zindaki, Wayne Valley (D4); Trevor Warner, Pequannock (D4); Robert Spezza, Hackettstown (D1); Taylor Molfetto, Kittatinny (D3); Anthony Roessner, Warren Hills (D1).

Injury time: Jarod Ostir, Warren Hills (D1); Mike Szynalski, Randolph (D2).

Notes: Wissing dropped to 152 on Thursday so we'll see where he is moving forward. He's by far the favorite in District 1 at 160, with a 9-1 win over Isemann on Dec. 22. Zevits (16-4) slides in here at No. 5 with Navarino dropping to 152. Szynalski hasn't wrestled since Jan. 9 or he'd be a candidate.

170

1. Sr. Spencer Carey, DePaul (D4)
2. Sr. Daniel Kilroy, Wayne Hills (D4)
3. Sr. Al Falco, Sparta (D3)
4. Jr. Josh Klimek, Kittatinny (D3)
5. Sr. Dylan Porcaro, West Milford (D4)

Others to watch: Joe Frumolt, Pope John (D3); Nico Negrini, Pompton Lakes (D4); Lance Fischer, Newton (D3); Jacob Cougle, Morris Knolls (D2); Dillon Fazliu, Montville (D2); Liam Gorman, High Point (D3).

Notes: Carey scored a 7-1 win over Dalcais, who bumped up from 160, in DePaul's 65-12 win on Friday. Carey (17-6) and Kilroy (16-0) are the clear 1-2 here. Falco (19-4), who was pinned by Kilroy earlier this season, beat Frumolt, 5-2, on Wednesday. Falco and Klimek (14-4) could square off on Friday. Porcaro bumped up to 182 to face some tougher competition -- losing 7-5 to Wayne Valley's PJ Chak and getting pinned by DePaul's Brandon Kui.

182

1. Jr. Brandon Kui, DePaul (D4)
2. Sr. Luke Drugac, Morris Knolls (D2)
3. So. Jake Brown, Pope John (D3)
4. Sr. David LoCascio, Kinnelon (D4)
5. Sr. PJ Chak, Wayne Valley (D4)

Others to watch: Angello Pico, Randolph (D2); Zach Mafaro, Kittatinny (D3); Dan Fisher, Phillipsburg (D1); Kyle Connelly, Hackettstown (D1); Frankie Negrini, Pompton Lakes (D4); Ian Nelsen, Mount Olive (D1); Peter Dellechiaie, Wayne Hills (D4); Scott MacLean, Dover (D2).

Notes: Drugac (17-1) bumped up to 195 and suffered his first loss -- 7-4 to Lenape Valley's Sam Palumbo, ranked below. Drugac pinned Chak (15-4) and Mafaro (14-4) this season. Brown (18-4), who recently dropped to 182, beat Pico, 6-3.

195

1. Sr. Patrick Daly, Pequannock (D4)
2. Sr. Dean Drugac, Morris Knolls (D2)
3. Jr. Joseph Soreco, DePaul (D4)
4. Jr. Drew Horun, Phillipsburg (D1)
5. Sr. Sam Palumbo, Lenape Valley (D2)

Others to watch: Kevin Lewis, High Point (D3); Jacob Tareky, Wayne Valley (D4); Kurt Nemeth, Warren Hills (D1); Andrew Nieves, Pope John (D3).

Notes: Daly (14-1), the Region 1 champion at this weight last season, beat LoCascio (14-2), who bumped from 182, 3-2. On Monday, Daly beat Palumbo, 1-0. Palumbo (20-2) scored a 7-4 victory over Luke Drugac, a Region 1 third-place finisher, on Friday. Dean Drugac (17-0), also third in Region 1 last season, earned a 14-8 win over Lenape Valley's Ralph Hall, a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex runner-up, at 220. Soreco (18-4) has reeled off 11 straight wins since Powerade.

220

1. Sr. Scott Lavelle, DePaul (D4)
2. Jr. Robert Melise, Phillipsburg (D1)
3. Sr. Adam Schlereth, Newton (D3)
4. Jr. Zach Herbert, Sparta (D3)
5. So. Liridon Leka, Montville (D2)

Others to watch: Ralph Hall, Lenape Valley (D2); Drew Flynn, Pompton Lakes (D4); Matthew Sportelli, Wayne Hills (D4); Todd Eckert, Roxbury (D2); Jacob Foukas, Pequannock (D4); Nick Trani, Wayne Valley (D4); Cole Benfatti, Jefferson (D3); Brody Oberly, Warren Hills (D1); Cliff Rutter, High Point (D3).

Notes: Schlereth, who was at DePaul the last two seasons, returned to action after his 30-day sit due to transfer rules and enters at No. 3 after decking Vernon's Mike Alvarez. Herbert beat former No. 3 Leka, 2-0, on Friday. Herbert (13-3) and Robbie Gennat (17-5) at 285, both weigh in at 220, but Herbert will likely be here for the postseason. Herbert gets the nod over Hall, who was pinned by Leka on Dec. 29.

285

1. Sr. Kyle Nothnagel, Phillipsburg (D1)
2. Jr. Parker Fox, Montville (D2)
3. So. Robbie Gennat, Sparta (D3)
4. Sr. Avery Sheruda, Jefferson (D3)
5. Sr. Rich Fritzky, Lenape Valley (D2)

Others to watch: Alex Kaltenhauser, West Morris (D1); Tyler Pittenger, Newton (D3); Taylan Zafis, Warren Hills (D1); Daniel Colabella, Mount Olive (D1); Shane Beston, Morris Knolls (D2); Nick Sanders, Pompton Lakes (D4); Zack Sieb, Morris Catholic (D2); Eric Lindstrom, West Milford (D4); Jake Pluta, Wayne Valley (D4); Joe Leszczynkski, Pequannock (D4).

Notes: Fox beat Gennat, 1-0, on Friday, so they stay 2-3. The No. 5 spot is a quandary as Fritzky dropped an 11-9 decision to Colabella after a 9-7 win in sudden victory over Hackettstown's Joe Andes earlier last week. Colabella has losses to Zafis and Kaltenhauser this season. Going by the overall body of work, Fritzky stays put for another week. Sanders may be knocking on the door.
