Blue Streaks, Wildcats victorious in HWS action

Both No. 1 seeds advanced with little trouble in the opening round of the third annual Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament on Friday. In fact, all eight home teams were victorious.

High Point (10-0), the top Sussex County seed and lone unbeaten team in the field, posted a 3-1 victory over No. 8 seed North Hunterdon in Wantage. Nikki Hull, Darby Smith and Brittany Papa all scored goals for the Wildcats. Hull poked in the game-winner with 10:27 left in the first half off a feed from Maureen Gill. Goalie Felicia Heard stopped 29 shots for the Lions (1-10).

Warren Hills (11-1), the No. 1 seed in the Hunterdon-Warren bracket, rolled to a 9-0 win over No. 9 seed North Warren on the turf in Washington. Senior forward Lindsey Schott recorded two goals and her three assists set a new school record. Schott, also the program's all-time goals leader with 63, now has 40 assists, eclipsing the previous mark of 39 by Toni Popinko, 2006-09.

In other action:

Newton 3, Phillipsburg 2 -- Alicia Grotyohann had a pair of goals and Melanie Rudio added a pair of assists for the fourth-seeded Braves (7-2). Priscilla Howell and Molly Zgoda scored for the fifth-seeded Stateliners (4-7).

Vernon 5, Delaware Valley 0 -- Junior forward Rachel Colvin continued her red-hot scoring ways with four goals following a two-goal effort on Wednesday for the third-seeded Vikings (10-2). Goalie Mary Drabich made 20 saves for the sixth-seeded Terriers (4-4-1).

Wallkill Valley 5, Hunterdon Central 1 -- Senior midfielder Brittany Harlos scored a goal and had two assists as the second-seeded Rangers rolled into the quarterfinals. Nicole Grube scored to help the seventh-seeded Red Devils (5-7) avoid the shutout.

Belvidere 1, Hackettstown 0 -- Senior forward Tiffany McKenna scored 20 seconds into the first overtime to lift the second-seeded County Seaters (9-2). Goalie Tanya Volkert made 18 saves for the 10th-seeded Tigers (2-10).

South Hunterdon 3, Pope John 2 -- Kelly Albanir scored and had an assist as the fourth-seeded Eagles (8-3) scored twice in the second half to oust the fifth-seeded Lions (4-6). Shannon Connell had two assists in the loss.

Voorhees 2, Kittatinny 0 -- Erin Miller scored a goal and Taylor Iriving added a second on a penalty stroke as the third-seeded Vikings (7-2) advanced to the quarterfinal round. Goalie Kimmie Pianucci made three saves. Her counterpart, Melissa Calascibetta, stopped 14 shots for the Cougars (3-7).
