Field Hockey roundup: Hackettstown stuns Newton

Senior forward Megan Healy picked the perfect time to notch her first goal of the season, and it gave Hackettstown a stunning 1-0 win over Newton on Monday in a Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference Freedom Division clash at the Merriam Avenue School field in Newton.

Also credit senior goalie Tanya Volkert, who stopped 22 shots in the win, as the Tigers (3-10 overall, 2-4 division) avenged an earlier 1-0 loss to the Braves (7-3, 4-2), ranked No. 7 in the Open Mike area, on Sept. 14.

The win snapped a four-game skid in the series dating to 2009. Hackettstown's previous win against Newton was 1-0 at home on Oct. 21, 2009. Since both teams joined the NJAC in '09, Newton is 5-2 overall against the Warren County school.

Newton's four-game win streak this season also came to an end on Monday.

Hackettstown's victory combined with Wallkill Valley's 4-0 win over Kittatinny gave Wallkill at least a share of the Freedom Division title. The Rangers (6-0 division) are two ahead of the Braves with two Freedom matchups remaining for both schools.
