Wrestling: New Jersey Writers Association Top 20

All eyes in these parts are focused on the sectional semifinals, particularly North 1, Group 2, where High Point and Newton could be on a championship showdown.

The Wildcats hold steady, while the Braves climb back into the rankings as five teams from the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex area are featured in this week's New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20.

High Point (20-1), which is still unbeaten against New Jersey competition this season, is in the No. 10 spot. Coach John Gardner's team is the No. 1 seed and opened the postseason with a 63-9 waxing of Pascack Hills in Monday's North 1, Group 2 quarterfinals.

Newton (16-5), which had been in the Top 20 earlier this season jumps back in at No. 20. Coach Eric Bollette's Braves, who are the No. 2 seed in North 1, Group 2, rolled to a 69-3 win over Hawthorne on Monday as they seek the program's third sectional title and first since winning back-to-back North 1, Group 1 championships in 2009-10.

Pope John (14-2) is holding tight in the No. 4 spot. Coach Mark Piotrowsky's Lions are the top seed as they seek the program's first championship since 1994 in Non-Public North B.

Hunterdon Central (20-1) stays in the No. 7 spot, as coach Jon Cantagallo-Rohm's Red Devils, who are the No. 1 seed in Central Jersey, Group 5, moved toward a sectional final clash against second-seeded Howell, in what would be a rematch of last year's epic Group 5 final, a 28-27 win for the Rebels.

Phillipsburg (13-2) stays at No. 8 as the No. 2 seed in North 2, Group 4 will square off against North Hunterdon in Wednesday's semifinals as coach Dave Post's squad bids for the program's fifth consecutive sectional title and 37th overall.

Bergen Catholic (11-1), the six-time defending Non-Public A champion, is the consensus No. 1 for a sixth straight week. Howell (28-0) remains the highest-ranked public school team at No. 3.

An impressive bronze trophy, donated by Prestige Imaging of Old Bridge, will be presented at the end of the 2017-18 campaign to the state’s No. 1 team in the final NJWWA poll during the state individual championships in Atlantic City.
