Wrestling: NJSIAA sectional semifinal matchups

Semifinal matches will be contested on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Winners advance to Friday's sectional championships at the gym of the higher seed.

All 1 and 2 seeds are still remaining, while five No. 5 seeds and five No. 6 seeds, up four from last year, advanced with wins on Monday.

High Point (20-1) was among three No. 1 seeds from the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex area to advance on Monday -- 63-9 over No. 8 Pascack Hills in the North 1, Group 2 quarterfinals. The Wildcats, who have won a Sussex County-best 25 sectional titles, are seeking back-to-back championships for the first time since winning five in a row from 2010-14.

For the first time in a series dating to 1976, High Point and Kittatinny will not meet as the fifth-seeded Cougars (10-11) lost to No. 4 Westwood for the second time this season -- 34-31 in the quarterfinals on Monday. Kittatinny coach John Gill's teams have now missed making the trip to groups only four times (2009, '10, '15, '18) since 2000.

Newton (16-5), the No. 2 seed which rolled to a 69-3 win over No. 7 Hawthorne, will host No. 3 Jefferson in Wednesday's North 1, Group 2 semifinals at Henry Boresch Memorial Gym. Coach Eric Bollette's Braves are seeking the program's third sectional title and first since going back-to-back in North 1, Group 1 in 2009-10.

Also in Sussex County, Sparta (North 1, Group 3) is seeking its second straight sectional title and its fourth overall, while Pope John (Non-Public B) has won seven in its history, but none since 1994.

Phillipsburg (13-2) and North Hunterdon (16-4) are set to meet for the second time this season as both cruised to first-round wins on Monday to reach the North 2, Group 4 semifinals. The second-seeded Stateliners rolled to a 68-6 win over No. 7 Colonia, while the third-seeded Lions were 57-6 winners over No. 6 Kearny. Coach Chris Hrunka's team dropped a 41-15 decision to P'burg on Jan. 24.

In another all-local matchup, No. 2 Voorhees will host No. 3 Warren Hills in the North 2, Group 3 semifinals on Wednesday. The Vikings (20-8), who scored a 39-24 win over Lyndhurst-North Arlington, earned a 36-31 win over the Blue Streaks on Jan. 24.

Delaware Valley, a No. 5 seed, advanced with a 50-18 win over No. 4 Bernards in the Central Jersey, Group 2 quarterfinals. The Terriers (9-11) will next face top-seeded Raritan for a fourth straight time in the postseason after beating the Rockets in the past three sectional finals. Del Val owns a 9-5 edge in the all-time series, including a 9-3 mark in postseason matchups.

Raritan, which has never hosted a sectional matchup against Del Val, seeks its first postseason win in the series since 2012 -- 30-26 in Central Jersey, Group 2 final.
