1. So. William Kui, DePaul
2. Fr. Brandon Paetzell, Phillipsburg
3. So. Dom Gallo, High Point
4. Sr. Stephen Caserta, Roxbury
5. Fr. Garrett O’Shea, Morris Knolls
Notes: Kui (14-3) has wrestled mostly at 113 this season, but is
4-1 at 106. He sustained two losses this past week at 113, but remains on top here
based on that 5-3 win over Camden Catholic state placer Tyler McBride. Paetzell
beat Gallo, 3-1, in sudden victory on Saturday in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex
semifinals, so no change here among the top five. Paetzell won the title, while
Gallo finished third. Caserta (15-1) lost to Hanover Park’s Austin Nash, 5-2,
on Friday but that doesn’t hurt him here. O’Shea didn’t meet Gallo in a dual
last Tuesday.
113 pounds
1. So. Max Nauta, Warren Hills
2. Jr. Bryan Damon, Jefferson
3. Sr. Zach Fisher, Phillipsburg
4. Jr. Christian Silva, Kittatinny
5. So. Dylan Luciano, West Morris
Notes: Nauta dominated Fisher, 16-2, in the
Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex finals for his first county championship after a
second-place finish in 2012. Damon (17-0) posted an impressive 2-0 win over
Toms River South’s Kevin Corrigan (fifth in the state last year and a
semifinalist at 113) and a 5-2 decision over Bergen Catholic state qualifier Tyler Casamenti
on Saturday. Silva finished third at HWS, losing 4-0 to Nauta in the semis.
Luciano lost to Hanover Park’s Nash, 7-5, on Saturday. He falls one spot behind
Silva, who looked solid this weekend at a tough weight. Speaking of weight,
North Warren junior Matt Ritchie would have entered here had he wrestled at
HWS.
120 pounds
1. Fr. Jared Kobis, High Point
2. Sr. Cory Fleming, West Morris
3. So. A.J. Vindici, Randolph
4. So. Peter Lipari, Lenape Valley
5. So. Tyler Hrycak, Wayne Valley
Notes: Kobis was right there with North Hunterdon state
placewinner Ryan Pomrinca, as he took his first loss of the season in the HWS
finals. Kobis beat Phillipsburg’s Steve Friedman, who was No. 5 last week, 3-1,
in the semifinals. Lipari dropped from 126 and finished third – beating Friedman,
7-2. Friedman falls out for now and Lipari enters here at No. 4.
126 pounds
1. So. David McFadden, DePaul
2. Sr. Joe Kratochvil, Warren Hills
3. So. Corey Zinsmeister, Phillipsburg
4. So. Ian Burke, Sparta
5. Fr. Austin Scrivani, Kittatinny
Notes: Kratochvil beat Zinsmeister, 5-4, with a late reversal in
the HWS semifinals en route to the title. Burke finished third by forfeit over
the P’burg wrestler, who sat because of match limits. They stay 3-4. Burke was
impressive in a 13-0 major of High Point’s Connor McHugh in the quarters.
Scrivani enters at No. 5 after a fifth-place finish at HWS. He beat McHugh, 7-6,
and has a win over Roxbury’s Kevin Hernandez (14-2) this season.
132 pounds
1. Sr. Sam Tareky, Wayne Valley
2. So. Glenn Haines, Lenape Valley
3. Sr. Anthony Johnson, Phillipsburg
4. So. David Migliaccio, West Morris
5. Jr. Jake Legotte, Roxbury
Notes: Tareky enters the week 15-3 with 14 pins. He’s a solid No.
1. Haines finished second at HWS, getting pinned in 39 seconds by two-time
champ Mike Pongracz of Delaware Valley. Johnson enters at No. 3 with his
fifth-place finish at HWS. The Region 1 runner-up had a tough draw, pinning Joe
Hocking of Wallkill Valley, who was fifth last week, before a 3-2 loss to
Hunterdon Central’s Collin Boylan on an illegal hold.
138 pounds
1. Sr. Nick Matthews, West Morris
2. Sr. Matt Benvenuto, Lenape Valley
3. So. Tom Murphy, Kittatinny
4. So. Max Elling, Phillipsburg
5. Sr. Kevin Bundschuh, Warren Hills
Notes: Benvenuto jumps up to No. 2 after his runner-up finish at
the HWS. He beat Murphy, 6-5, in the semifinals. Murphy beat Elling, 4-2, for
third place so they fall right in line at 2-3-4. Hackettstown’s Brandon Rothman
did not place, but gave a good account in a 3-1 loss to Murphy in the quarters.
But Warren Hills’ Kevin Bundschuh, who was fifth, gets the nod at No. 5. He has
a 3-2 loss to Matthews and beat Delaware Valley’s Matt Gilmore, who gave Joe
Kratochvil his only loss, on Saturday. I’m going with the better body of work.
145 pounds
1. Sr. Jesse Thorsen, Belvidere
2. Sr. Andrew Kaluzny, Phillipsburg
3. Sr. Tyler Kozimor, Hackettstown
4. So. Jason Gaccione, High Point
5. Jr. Nick Romyns, Kittatinny
Notes: Shaking things up here a bit. Thorsen won the HWS title,
beating Phillipsburg senior Andrew Kaluzny, 3-1, in the finals. Kaluzny knocked off
Kozimor, 5-3, in the semis. Gaccione was beaten in the quarters by Hunterdon
Central’s Tim Higginson in a classic matchup and finished fifth. Romyns was
sick and did not compete at what was a rugged weight class. West Morris’
Brandon Carcuffe (14-1) drops out for now.
152 pounds
1. So. Jimmy Schuitema, Phillipsburg
2. So. Luke Bohn, Jefferson
3. Fr. Dean Drugac, Morris Knolls
4. Jr. Tommy Hooker, High Point
5. Jr. Evan Butka, Warren Hills
Notes: Schuitema was second at HWS, forfeiting the final due to a
sore shoulder. Bohn (14-4) took major step up in competition on Saturday -- losing, 12-4, to state champ B.J. Clagon
of Toms River South and, 2-0, to talented Bergen Catholic freshman Joe Grello.
Hooker enters here after a fifth-place finish at HWS. He beat Hunterdon Central’s
Dylan Cote, 9-7, along the way. Cote beat Randolph’s Sean Rodgers twice this
season, so Rodgers drops out. Butka beat Lenape Valley's Dominic LaBell for third, so he slides in at No. 5 with a win over Cote, 2-1, in OT.
160 pounds
1. Jr. Dillon Artigliere, Roxbury
2. Jr. Sam Button, Mendham
3. Sr. Patrick VanDuyne, West Milford
4. Sr. John Sickles, West Morris
5. Jr. Jake Kocsis, Phillipsburg
Notes: Button beat VanDuyne, 4-2, on Saturday in a dual meet so
they trade spots. Artigliere has major decision wins over both wrestlers this
season. Kocsis enters at No. 5 after his championship run at HWS. He beat
Delaware Valley’s Kody Eichlin, 4-3, in the finals. Sickles beat Eichlin, 7-2,
in the John Goles finals. Ryan Ward of Vernon, who was No. 5 last week,
finished fifth after a 7-6 quarterfinal loss to Joe LaBell of Lenape Valley,
who was fourth at HWS.
170 pounds
1. Sr. Parker Meytrott, Montville
2. Jr. Kieran Gerrity, Kittatinny
3. Jr. Broderick Bupivi, Phillipsburg
4. So. D.J. Barrett, Lenape Valley
5. So. Tim Byrne, Mendham
Notes: Gerrity finished second again at HWS, losing, 12-5, to
Voorhees stud Jadaen Bernstein. The Kittatinny junior avenged a loss to
Hunterdon Central’s David Fenton, 3-1 in sudden victory, in the semifinals. Byrne
beat West Milford's Richard DiZenzo, 6-4, on Saturday in a dual meet. Barrett, who was sixth at
HWS, beat DiZenzo earlier this season, but lost, 9-6, to Bupivi for fifth. The
Stateliner is in and DiZenzo (12-4) is out.
182 pounds
1. So. Nick DePalma, DePaul
2. Sr. Michael Burns, Morris Knolls
5. Sr. Josh Sibblies, Newton
4. Sr. Jake Brook, Kittatinny
5. Sr. Evan Bray, Belvidere
Notes: Some shuffling here as Sibblies won the HWS title, beating
Brook, 1-0, in the finals. Brook dropped down from 195, where he was No. 2.
Burns beat Sibblies, 3-2, so he moves up to the two-hole. Bray, who was No. 2
last week, drops three spots after finishing third at HWS. He lost to Brook,
2-1, in OT.
195 pounds
1. Jr. Anthony Landberg, Wayne Valley
2. Jr. Kyle Stoll, High Point
3. Jr. Dylan Wunder, Kittatinny
4. Jr. Jesse Windt, West Morris
5. So. Gus Protogeropoulos, Newton
Notes: Stoll inches up a spot with his title run at HWS. He beat
Wunder, 5-1, in the semifinals. Wunder finished fourth. Tough call here at No.
5. Protogeropoulos did not place at HWS after being pinned by third-place
finisher Kyle Levy of Voorhees in the quarterfinals. However, the Newton
wrestler does have wins over Dan Pepe of North Hunterdon and Ryan Witner of
Warren Hills, who Phillipsburg’s Kyle Kinney beat, 2-1 in OT, for fifth.
Protogeropoulos (13-3) beat Witner, 5-0, at the John Goles so he gets the nod. Wunder
beat Kinney, 4-0, in the HWS quarters.
220 pounds
1. Sr. J.B. Lawson, Belvidere
2. Jr. Garrett Armstrong, Kittatinny
3. Sr. Robert Levine, Wayne Hills
4. Jr. Bobby McDonnell, High Point
5. Sr. Pete Andrich, Mount Olive
Notes: Lawson avenged an earlier 2-0 loss to Armstrong with a 3-2
win in overtime in the finals of the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex. They trade spots
at the top. McDonnell finished third at HWS, losing, 2-1, to Armstrong in the
semifinals. Levine lost, 4-2, to Lawson on Jan. 5. Tough call at 3-4 but they stay
for now. Andrich (16-1) holding steady in the five-spot.
285 pounds
1. Sr. William Wenzel, West Milford
2. Sr. Brendon Narbone, Lakeland
3. Sr. Ryan Appleby, Belvidere
4. So. Andrew Pacheco, Warren Hills
5. Sr. Jarrett Williams, Phillipsburg
Notes: Appleby, who was No. 1 last week, dropped a 7-5 decision in
overtime to Williams in the HWS semifinals. Pacheco won the title, beating
Williams, 12-10 in ultimate tiebreaker in what was a classic finals matchup.
Appleby beat Pacheco convincingly earlier this season. Wenzel beat Narbone,
2-1, on Wednesday, so they are the 1-2. Going to keep Appleby ahead of Pacheco based
on two wins in their three career meetings dating to last season.
Pacheco-Williams rematch on tap Thursday.
